I’m going to be Devil’s advocate a bit and say I love a good regional Victorian town to connect to rather than outside of Vic but there is zero business case for what I am suggesting.

I think there is at least some business case for it - the Bulldogs are getting a nice slice of government funding for their Ballarat games. I would prefer this option also - 2 games somewhere in the regions. Dare say the AFL is trying to get a foothold in Cairns though so playing there could become lucrative. That or it's a failsafe for if the Suns keep stagnating down south and cannibalising the SEQ market - 'We are the Suns of the far north sky!'.

Given that "Gold Coast" and "Successful sports team" have never really gone together, moving them up north is not a terrible idea!

I have echoed this many times on here when stating I think the Suns should be relocated to be the NT team. See also - GWS relocating to Canberra to represent the Riverina, where AFL has a foothold, compared to Western Sydney where it never will.

Cairns population is about a quarter of the GC, it is more pro-NRL than the GC, and the humidity makes it unsuitable for regular games. Plus no stadium suitable for regular games. No chance.

That's all well and good, but Gold Coast is a void for sporting success.

The more Victorians that move north the more successful it will be, look at the GC academies it gets brought up all the time about how well AFL is growing in SEQ and kids playing the sport, would be interesting to know numbers before and after COVID, and how many are ex Victorian's.

As people who moved north aren't going to stop loving AFL and have their kids start playing NRL just because they moved to Queensland or even Sydney.

AFL is pretty big all over qld. Most of the students I've taught in both FNQ and SEQ prefer AFL over NRL.

If Warrnambool could get a half decent facility together, it would be a perfect home away from home for 1-2 games per year.

The corridor from Geelong to Port Fairy is chockers with hawks supporters

............... with its current contract to play four games per season in Launceston worth close to $20 million.

What does this mean? Sounds like a lot but is it?
It's certainly not $20 million per year. What's the length of the contract. And what's the net benefit to the club?

How about an extra 3 or 4 games per year at the MCG - with the increased patonage and massive sponsorship benefits that follow - and with 40K or 50K spectators at those home games?
That's probably worth a lot more than $20 million over the term of the Tassie contract (whatever that is).

When we first did the Tassie deal - in 2001 - we were desperate, a team struggling for members and revenue.
Now we have a huge (and growing) supporter base - in Victoria - which is clambering to see us play.
Spectators of around 12,000 to 18,000 watching us in Launceston (or Cairns for that matter) doesn't cut it any more.

Main reason for Tassie games was to not lose money playing at docklands. Otherwise the team made a prelim and finances were getting back on track. Longest run of profits in the AFL

Maybe keeping the 10k Tassie members happy is the clubs plan as well as keeping a massive home ground advantage

It wouldn't be remotely close, no. There's a reason we keep persisting with the deal down there and it would be mostly financial.

Love our games in Launceston

We are hard to beat, having a fantastic home ground advantage, and the financial benefit is huge

Actually our record in Launceston is no better than in Melbourne v those same clubs.
Medium term the benefits of playing in Tassie will diminish significantly.
Long term we should be aiming to be as big as Blues/Bombers/Tigers. Geelong has usurped us as the fifth biggest Vic club and playing games in Tasmania does nothing to help us grow in Melbourne.
We should be driving a very hard bargain for 26/27.

Hawthorn is not getting extra home games at the mcg. The afl love children (Carlton and essendon) want more mcg games, and any shift of games would see us be forced to pick up the slack at docklands

Disagree. The AFL denied Essendon’s request for an extra game even though their contract expired last year. No doubt offering good $$$ to keep the 7/4 split. It all comes down to negotiations, I hope we are having them.

Except there aren’t 10k Tassie members.

I’m a Tassie member (and live in Melbourne) like many other Melbourne residents I know who are “Tassie” members.
We’ve all been “Tassie members” for 20 plus years!

We just retain Tassie memberships for the reserve seats associated with our membership.

Also the Launceston casino has a huge number of member tickets (presumably given gratis each year) to keep the punters happy and dole out for the local games - and they surely don’t count as Tassie” members.

There’s a lot of smoke and mirrors on that front.🙂
