I hear you, but at least he isn't just bombing blindly - he tries to escape or create, which can lead to stuff ups.

The more frustrating thing for me is when Hartung or Hill or Smith get it, start to run and they look up there is nothing to kick to, or worse, all our forwards are standing in each others hip pockets allowing a massive pack to form, which than creates the long bomb from our runners that than leads to rebound run and gun we struggle to contain, instead of spreading the defense and taking marks from leading at the ball carrier.

Still more than half the season to go to get this sorted out :thumbsu:
Was great intensity to tackle, hurt and win the ball but I agree that there was a lack of movement which meant few or no good options to kick to. Lost count of how many times we'd have a player trying to make that next kick from half back flank and the best movement we'd get would be a light jog or a half assed lead before the player was forced to just put it high and long down the line. And a lot of those were picked off.

Listening to SEN this morning, you'd think the Swans towelled us up by 100+ points last night. The media are just ridiculous, Hawthorn wins and we're premiership material. The moment we lose, it's all over for us. One comment that made me switch off was that Sam Mitchell look cooked last night and has possibly gone a season too long. Admittedly, that was a caller, not the SEN commentators, but do people actually think before they open their mouths any more?

Mitch hasn't been great the last couple of weeks, at his age that = cooked until proven wrong.
It could happen but I hope not yet. Everytime one of our older players looks off the pace questions will be asked.

The whole media last night and today have given Hawks very little credit for last night's efforts and talked the swans up like they played well against a full strength and focused opponent.

You'd think Buddy dominated and none of our forwards did anything.

Also not a single mention of the umpires at all as if this game was umpired perfectly, you can see the narrative this year, if we lose we are done if we win, controversial umpiring helped

Slow start = not fully focussed on the game
Poor goal kicking = not fully focussed
Brain fades/ poor decisions = not fully focussed

Some blatantly poor umpiring that cost opportunities to get closer in the third

And still within a kick early in the last

It took an outstanding mark and goal from Tippett and two fantastic goals from Buddy to put the game out of reach

Our best is still good enough but something less, like last night won't be enough

So called supporters who want to blame individual player errors totally miss the point
When we are less than our best there will be plenty of blame to share

Last night, only Gunston, Chip and perhaps Gibbo don't get a share

Unfortunately I think this year we will be a couple of key positions down.

Mainly key forward.

Gunston is a gun and all class. Doesn't kick huge bags but is always a contributor.

Hawks have the greatest collection of small forwards I have ever seen. The media fawn over Betts and co, but they don't hold a candle to Breust, Cyril and Poppy. They all have strengths as players and they compliment each other.

Unfortunately they are not as effective this year as they could be as we are light a key position forward.

This is absolutely NOT a dig at Sicily or TOB at all. I think they have both shown glimpses and promising signs. But we all know it takes years for key forwards to develop. Even Rough and Bud took 2-3 seasons before they could impact games consistently, and that was fast tracking their careers by playing them when they weren't ready.

I see our season as a bit like Adelaide in 2013 (except this group has achieved things and aren't pretenders). The crowd had a lot of eggs in the Walker basket. When he did his knee at the start of 2013 they were forced to play Lynch and Jenkins and use them as targets, it fast tracked their development and now you would say Walker is probably their worst key forward (and a sook but that's not relevant).

Key forward is the hardest position to fill. That's why the $wans used all their COLA to steal the best one. Otherwise you need a first round draft pick. Hawks are going well considering the picks they have had and where they managed to get TOB and Sicily in the draft.

It might not happen in time for this year, but these 2 will be better off for the games they have played. It'll be good for the $wans as well as they can pick either of them up by offering extra rental assistance if they start to fire.

Especially considering his start to the year has been nothing short of great. but AH, as I have learned from many years of watching footy and listening to the radio, rarely to people of any intelligence call up talk back. You get the odd one, but mostly are complete imbeciles. Apologies for anyone on here who has, but its just something I have found. Especially SEN.

I agree. I guess the thing that annoys me a little, even though I've come to expect it, is there's no consideration from the media that Hawthorn are playing a virtual Grand Final every week as every other club is testing themselves against the reigning 3-peat champions. The Hawks have to bring their "A" game to the table every week. If they don't, they get beaten. Other clubs can have the luxury of not performing at their best each week, but not the Hawks. It was only last week that Sydney lost to Richmond, but this week the media thinks they are fantastic.

It looked as if the plan last night was to send chaos balls into our forward line and backing our small forwards to win it on the ground.

A couple of times I noticed our players change the position of the ball from traditional drop punt to an end-over-end kick.

The problem was these kicks drop a little short and our while our forwards were focused on running back into the space the Sydney defenders were able to mark the ball.

I like the idea, just need to execute it a bit better.

Ceglar lost us the game

HIS HANDPASS??? NO MATE, HE WAS REACTING AS A WELL DRILLED TEAM SHOULD , LANGFORD SHOULD HAVE BEEN WATCHING AND TALKING, HE RAN PAST, ANYTHING COULD HAVE HAPPENED HE WAS ONLY THINKING ONE DIMENSIONALLY WHEN THAT HAPPENED, JUST RUN TO THE GOAL FOR A MAYBE , WHEN THE BALL WAS ABOUT TO BE HANDED OVER.pROBABLY A GOAL IF HE TOOK THE HANDPASS. That's how I saw it. !

HILL WANTS TO HAMMER THE BALL INTO THE FORWARD LINE IF HE CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHICH WAY TO GO.

He is kicking the ball worse than I've ever seen him, Sydney were good, we had a chance right up to the last 5 to 6 minutes and doing that even when playing like a pack of donkeys, so flat and so low.

Cyril ? Even Langers seems to get caught and seems to have lost that animal in him when he gets in and under, different feelings, for different weeks?

But we lift and take Sydney again next time, Sicily and O'Brien were good, Poppy tried his guts out , we lost by 14 points after a terrible week, the Umps ! I can't blame them, I have to blame their lack of vision , and their rules boss s' in the AFL.

Sometimes they missed stuff for both teams. But 50 metre penalties , surely this is bringing these umpires into view for petty things not needed.
It is OVER USED.
The Rioli one was absolute nonsense , who did this clown think he was. Doesn't anybody think that the AFL or the club presidents need to look into a few serious things in umpiring in todays' game, all over ? It is getting worse !

Gunner is great but he hasn't got the body mass, Sydney had Bruest outnumbered last night, our first three points.... deliberate set shots on goal , other misses later on, it took the wind out of our sails and we couldn't lift for long periods, even so , we had a couple of runs at the opposition a little luck a little sensible adjudicating it could have been closer.

For a night where we were so s**t, Sydney still had to fight to the end, they should have beaten us by 8 goals, we couldn't kick ,couldn't pass , couldn't make decisions, was it Roughy??

I don't know , I saw some insipid football against the Giants , maybe we are just worn out, still only round nine , but we need to keep going and maybe Spangher? Even big Fitzpatrick for a forward spot , still got plenty of forwards , smallies too, but Fitz is a big boy if he's fit?

Sicily and O'Brien need some muscle help up front, Hodgey is needed, Sam is getting minded now, and clobbered, Buddy well we won two flags after he left , he's not an excuse for us, we've worn him before, but isn't he a super champion. What a footballer.

Pity the rules and the umpires don't promote beautiful free flowing football, some of last night scrums on the boundary were horrid to look at.

I 'd love to know what you other Hawks think on that. We will face adversity and come back, not quite half way through the season and every body has there turn down ward, Sydney historically have been big guns during the season still have to win the main game!

Yeah, we are certainly struggling with the tall forward post. Hale and Roughie is leaving a huge hole. I think if we could have just lost Hale and had Roughie there, we'd be tracking a lot better than we are, but with both down we lose two guys that not only could take a contested mark but bring the ball to ground if they didn't. Sicily and TOB are doing ok. TOB needs to present more and really impact contests but unfortunately isn't. Sicily is playing well enough and is showing some really positive signs.

Just think we have to persist and see where they take us. I assume Schoey will come in at some stage, which I won't be adverse too as he provies the contest TOB doesn't. TOB though has a lot more upside. Schoey though, he kicks his set shots a lot better than most.

Hawthorn were soft tonight - SOFT. Played like they didn't want to get hurt, stupid handballs, going to ground and running themselves into trouble. Their decision making was ridiculously bad. I saw both rucks try and grab the ball off the ground, stand up and then kick directly into a Hawthorn or Sydney player's body at least 5 times. People can complain about the umpires all they want, but they don't affect the effort of the players....

Sort of true, but they can frustrate players with their miscalculating and non seeing, and when you think you just can't touch anything, that's when these sometimes incompetent umpires can affect a side. The whole umpiring system needs investigating thoroughly! Too many changes.

Amen. He has been hopeless for a long time but is inexplicably still picked each week.
When his speed is not needed ,out on the wings , Clarko will change , I think its close , he costs us every week, but when it works for him he is great, I think he needs a rest at Box Hill.
If he's leaving Hawthorn , maybe his heart is not in it. Remember he's a premiership player , he can't be a mug, but this year he is not like he's been in the past.

The problem with this tactic is that it's easily countered with extra defenders in our forward 50. $wans did it last night. Freo had 2 or 3 back but of course we all know they are pretty shit house.

We need to make defenders accountable for this tactic to work. Sicily and TOB have to get to more dangerous positions more often.

It'll come with time.

Also guys is it just me, or is TOB better in defense than forward?

Do all teams from north of the border get to "rugby tackle" around the ankles or just this lot?

Still, our set shot kicking was awful.
Yes, set shots were our loser last night, but , those two trips in the third, I think , I nearly threw a brick at the TV set, it wouldn't have mattered Perth is being blown away this morning, power is dead and TV is dead! HAHA !

Surprised my remote bounced and remained functional.

Was blown off the golf course very early!

I pretty much avoid all footy media the day after we lose, especially when it's to media darlings like Sydney.

Did anyone see Mitchell get cleaned up by Sinclair in the 2nd quarter? Mitch went in for a bump and got him a little high and Sinclair went down and made it a lot worse than it was, but didn't fool the umpire into awarding the free. Then when the ball was clear he crashed into Mitchell's back, when he wasn't looking. Dog act, especially when it's someone half your size who can't see you coming.

If Mitchell had done the same it would be played a million times during the week.

A few observations:

1. The crowd was so flat last night. I'm in M57, and it's usually humming, but it was dead quiet.

2. The guys really tried, the effort was fantastic. Players were making mistakes, things they wouldn't usually do, perhaps they were trying too hard.

3. I hate losing to those bastards. Ugly football, the Roos influence is so strong. Buddy stands out because he is a star in a whole lot of dross.

4. The posters here criticising players, particularly the younger players, should hang their heads in shame. You don't deserve to support this great club.
