Autopsy Hawks v Swans

I think its designed to counter the extra defender.

The hope is the ball tumbles forward into space, allowing our small forwards to run onto it or at least tackle them as they pick the ball up.

It just seemed the kicks last night were either a bit short or long and the Sydney defenders were chopping them off in the air.

Yep agree. Hawks really struggled to get the ball over the back into space last night, which has been how they have been trying to work a small forward line all year.

My question (because I wasn't there) is was it because of the way the $wans set up? Or was it more Hawthorn failing to either hit a leading target of go for the longer ball? Were our mids caught in 2 minds. To me watching on TV, the forward line always seemed fairly congested and there were several times that the inside 50 disposal had little to no pressure put on it yet they would hit a $wans player uncontested. It was pretty frustrating.

Actually, it was Clarko who played that style which fell into syds hands. He was worried about the swans inside 50 entry numbers so our mids and hf line worked back more than usual to get the ground ball and run with it in counter attack style!! We tried that against the cats as well and it isn't working atm, to get a better gauge on how poor we have been just check how little scoreboard impact our mids have had all year. Too much workload defensively and not enough in form runners covering the ground. Hope this summation helps.

I wasnt there either but on the telly it looked as if the kicks were bad.

They either needed to drop them a bit short or go longer from where the forwards were setup, instead the kicks were on their head.

Yeah I know, just trying for some lols. Interesting re: 2 I50's, will have to rewatch that.

What makes the bombing in even more bizarre was Teddy sitting on the pine since Q1 - the defense was already a man down.

**** me, the Sydney posters are up and about all of a sudden, haven't seen this influx of bloods culture since early 2013

Edit: No wait, there was quite a bit of bold posting around August 2014 as well, my mistake.

Thanks for the insight.

Interestingly enough I thought last night we worked the ball probably the best we had all year. It really just seemed that last disposal inside 50 let us down. Particularly early, Hawks were on top in general play but couldn't score. Should have been up by 3-4 goals but of course momentum swung and they were down by 5 as is modern footy.

Listening to SEN this morning, you'd think the Swans towelled us up by 100+ points last night. The media are just ridiculous, Hawthorn wins and we're premiership material. The moment we lose, it's all over for us. One comment that made me switch off was that Sam Mitchell look cooked last night and has possibly gone a season too long. Admittedly, that was a caller, not the SEN commentators, but do people actually think before they open their mouths any more?

The SEN phone line is the most autistic old man community going around. Probably calls for his team to kick "straight up the guts" week in week out, too.

We just couldn't kick straight and lacked cohesion. It was a bloody mess. With Roughy out, we need a big body to crash the packs and provide a contest. Give the small forwards a chance. We have been getting outmarked in our forward line too easily.

There has been a big change in personnel, so they need time to gel. It's a long season and I expect Clarko to make the proper adjustments. In finals, anything can happen so I'm fairly upbeat. The Hawks have a shitload of guns, who when are switched on, can destroy any team in the comp.

Notice that Schoey is back at Box Hill tonight and Spangher is playing there too. I hope that we can get both back in to form for the rest of the season. TOB and Sicily try hard enough but don't crash the packs to bring the ball to ground. Both have been fairly reliable set shots, unfortunately both had bad nights last night but they weren't alone.

Structurally Schoey (hopefully in form) is very important to the team structure, particularly with no Roughy this year. We need a big strong bodied forward to stop the opposition taking defensive marks and clearing the ball easily. It's enough to create a chaos ball at ground level, then the tall defenders will struggle to stop our small forwards. Sicily either takes a speccy or has no further impact on the contest and TOB hasn't yet got the mass or positioning craft to compete against the big defenders.

Anyway a brave effort by the boys and we could easily have won with better conversion or "free kick Hawthorn".

Notice that the unbeatable Cats got ahead of themselves today and that brightened my weekend! Schadenfreude.

I feel we need Schoey in the team just because he's an experienced tall who knows the structures. I think we need probably to be playing one of TOB and Sicily, as playing both means our tall spine is the following in games played for hawthorn (in brackets total games played)

Brand: 2 Games
Frawley: 25 games (Total 164)
Ceglar: 38 games
McEvoy: 40 games (total 131)
TOB: 9 Games
Sicily: 11 games

That's 125 aggregate games that these six players have played in hawks colours, under Clarko's game plan.

Schoey has played 98 games under clarko. That's 4/5 of the aggregate of the others.

Nothing to be learned from last night's game.

Except that Rough and his wife, his family, his mates, and the Hawthorn footy club people are suffering an emotional toll after what must have been a fukc!ng horrible few days. The team put in a great effort, but were spent. Mentally, emotionally, and physically.

If you want to talk footy, everything that happened last night has been happening all year. We had our chances, but who cares. We're capable of far better, but who cares. If we regain our edge, we'll be right up there. But who cares.

I just want Roughie to be okay. So does everyone else. Rough will fight on. The club will fight on. But things will never be quite the same again. And it showed out there last night.

But Brand, Toby and Sicily all look like much better players than Shoey. I agree Shoey comes in but for Hill not one of these guys ...

I think schoey comes in for Ceglar for mine.

I was tagged, i didn't post here until then. Wishing someone to "drop dead" is in very poor taste, given the obvious struggles happening at your club.

Needless to say (as I've stated it a number of times elsewhere), all the best to Roughy, we all hope for a full recovery. He's a very likeable footballer.

I agree it's in poor taste, but do you dispute that you've been going through liking posts to troll?

I checked, and you liked a single post, which was a swan player troll post, so I can see where DP was frustrated. That being said, maybe make like Elsa and "let it go".

Going onto opposition boards and trying to take the moral highground is only going to set you up to be shot down, mate. I can tell you from experience.

Drop dead?

Nice language. Looking forward to the next game, at the SCG.

Yes, p*ss off, troll.
Your artificial club, pinned together with AFL cash, is a piece of joyless garbage.

Nobody cares.

I watched the second half again.

Whilst we played poorly, they were able to push out what ended up being a winning margin courtesy of some tiggy touch umpiring. The smith 50, and the hannebury free kick which ended up with buddy's second in the final term. add ceglar's brain fade, which resulted in buddy big bomb, and their 14 point margin becomes a lot less impressive. We also had our wings clipped by the umps in the third when we were pressing.

ALL THAT SAID, we didn't deserve to win.

All in all, I still have faith that our best footy in 2016 is in front of us. Our best in the past two years has been unbeatable. But the side we put out on the park this sept will be diminished compared to '14/'15. no lake. No rough. Our defence should still be strong enough, I think. Brand and spanger helping gibbo, chip and strats. My initial feeling was that no rough meant that we couldn't win the flag. BUT if we can get gunston sicily and schoey all playing a solid 2 months together, combined with our smalls, they should be able to gel and can still kick a winning score come finals. schoey playing higher, and gunners and the sicilian playing deeper.

The real issue is our midfield gaining some ascendency again.

Deep in the heart of all kings resides the knowledge that one day, inevitably, their reign will come to end. The great kings go down swinging.

Keep the faith.

how come Hannebury was given benefit of the doubt for the non mark and then no attempt to dispose--- ball up, but no benefit of the doubt was afforded to smith after the 5 meter kick was intercepted?
both incorrect calls too

Was the biggest Swans troll going around a few years ago. Mr Big on the Bay. Then we crushed them in 2014 and he's barely been sighted since. Seems to have just made a strong return in the past few months.

The fortitude is strong with this one.

I'm at junior footy this morning and all the Sydney supporters are putting the boot in. Claiming that the Roughie situation has nothing to do with football, that it's no excuse etc. Hard to stay restrained.....very hard. I think I despise the Swans more than the bombers, words I never thought I would say.
