Hahah it's just become a ****ing terrible terrible joke.

Team stayed in the rooms after half time. No run. No poise.

Once again total mental meltdown. Didn't make the most of the opportunities to put them away on the board.

Positive signs from the young players and we at least got to see the some of the stars haven't lossed a step over the pre-season. Shoenmakers stood up today.

Of course still have a positive outlook on the season still.

Calm down people. Thought all pre season we were couple of weeks behind cats. Only round 1 and we already sulking. Maybe some of us need to harden the F... UP.
I think it's the fact we keep doing the same thing and getting the same results which is driving the supporters on this board crazy. Lucky we get another crack at winning a game next week.

One player that seems to escape criticism every week is Shiels - did nothing and a couple of really soft efforts today, am I alone in thinking this??
I was surprised he wasnt the sub i think Clarko hinted at it a few weeks back he has had an interupted pre-season

Posted this in the other thread but would like some discussion on it so I'll repost it.

http://www.afl.com.au/video/2013-02-04/2013-laws-of-the-game-marking-contests
From the 2 minute mark the AFL talks about how they are eliminating blocking in a marking contest. Today, Geelong did this almost every time they went forward. Hawkins or Pods would take their eyes off the ball and block the direct opponent of the player who was going for the mark. I can think of at least half a dozen occasions in their forward line alone. How does the umpire let them get away with it? It was blatantly obvious so many times but no one said boo about it.

Anyway, onto the game.

First half was good, Hill a stand out with his run and ability to find the ball and use it well. Hopefully he was subbed out as a precaution as he was an x factor for us in getting the early ascendancy. Anderson was quiet early after being subbed on but found his feet and the ball a lot more in the last 10 minutes. Good signs.
Mitchell resumed his regular programming, getting a lot of the ball and getting his hands dirty. Sewell worked hard, Puopolo was probably the only player who had a crack in the third, and was really good.

Second half was rubbish, we lost our structure, we stopped running, we began to fumble the ball, hospital kicks and handballs constantly, forward line was as dysfunctional as a North Korean nuclear weapon and generally we handed the game to them. It's rather disappointing that we have really not been able to play 4 quarters of football against the Cats for a long time. If we play 4 quarters we win, instead we seem to have a nap for a quarter or more and let them run away.

That said, I t the supposed curse or the streak they have against us, they can win as much as they like but inside I know Chapman still cries himself to sleep every night over the past.

Gunston can have a go at Box Hill, he was terrible, Smith can have another chance but he needs to improve dramatically. 2 rucks doesn't work and cost us an extra runner today. It baffles me as to why we had Roughead in the ruck when we had 2 proper ruckman on the ground.

Onto next week, given our fixture I'm expecting a slow start to the year, our fitness just isn't up to where we would want it at the moment

Played into the cats hands again bombing the ball on Harry Taylor's head time and time again..no chase out of forward 50..missing clutch goals Luke breust......shields..etc..no composure in 2nd half...players going missing..looking at you ...Lewis ..ruff head..buddy..guns ton..hale..to name a few...should have moved shoes forward and ruff back in last qtr to change it up ..out coached again, but we will learn from it apparently ,the players are to dumb to now I reckon the coach is..we never change things up ,we're so predictable were stupid.......end rant. 4 now

Here are my observations from the game, i'll try and keep it short:
- 2 rucks, Roughy, Franklin and Gunston. 16 marks between them. Podsiadly and Hawkins had 13. Enough said.
- We still bomb it into forwards incapable of marking, leaving the Geelong defenders to mop up. The amount of times we didn't even compete for the ball, leaving Geelong players to mark uncontested is unforgivable, yet it continually happens.
- We still can't kick goals. This time it was Breust who should hang his head for missing sitters in crunch time
- The amount of times Geelong just had players in open space. They spread far better than we did.
- If Franklin wants 1 mil or more, he can **** right off. While there is no doubt he is a champion, i don't think that he gives us a 1/10 chance of winning a flag, so why should he get 1/10 of the salary cap?

On the positive:
- Anderson. Nuff said.
- Hill impressed, but i don't know why we subbed him instead of Smith/Savage/Shiels. Even though Smith and Savage did something in the last quarter for once, they deserved to get the red vest far more than Hill.
- Schoey. Did extremely well at nearly every contest, although he did have a few turnovers from bomb kicks, which came straight back.
- Puopolo, Mitchell, Gibson, Birchall, Guerra were all pretty good throughout the game. Gibson will kill himself one of these days with his bravery.

Mark my words, we will not win the flag until we beat Geelong. We simply don't have the ticker to go all the way while we lose to an inferior team over and over again, in the same fashion.

I just can't believe they did it again. When will Hawthorn harden the **** up already.

I'm not normally one for a rant but we are as weak as poss
Disgusted
Hawks ran out of legs. Didn't kill it in the second quarter. Its the first game , but don't anybody start abusing and knocking every thing .
Maybe Geelong are a bit fitter , but neither could kick properly at certain times of the game.
Geelong were just by themselves too often in the second half our guys were out on their feet.
I don't know why , but it is not because of any bulldust curse. That is just rubbish.
But we may improve , now wait for the media and the Buddy bullshit to come.

I don't usually give it a miss after a loss that really annoys me , but this time I wonder about the Hawks , they have all the ammo but surely you don't just get too tired to run.
That is exactly what happened. Fumbling from both sides, Hawks once again over did the excess handball and fancy pants stuff, when a kick would have been better.
But they fall into that trap at times . Pity its against the Cats. But Geelong have their guns operating and ours weren't , I don't think Brian Lake would have changed much today . Shoenmakers played his guts out, Buddy was all over the place one or two super things , but no more , Roughy couldn't get his hands on it much , Cyril didn't have a super day.
But these games early show you just what needs fixing . We can get much better, but today was a big let down , I expected us to be peacking and Geelong to be moving out of their window, I still think this may come about this year, lucky that was 1st round.
Better bring a better game over here next week.

Calm down people. Thought all pre season we were couple of weeks behind cats. Only round 1 and we already sulking. Maybe some of us need to harden the F... UP.

With all due respect I disagree
Come round 1 we should be ready, no excuses
I heard a call on the radio as I left that there were 35 blokes on the ground who looked fitter than Franklin and I agree
Not good enough

I'm seriously over this team. Having been a Hawk since 1992 and never experiencing what so many of my fellow supporters experienced until 2008, this team has delivered nothing since. I feel like 2009-???? has been an utter waste of the talent we have. Buddy, Rioli, my god the things I would have done to have blokes like this in the mid-late nineties!

I would seriously prefer to watch the Hawthorn team from 1997. They may have lost more games then I can remember and finished second last, but at least they were genuinely shit. This mob is gifted with talent, far beyond what I would of even dreamed of in the 90's, yet when the crunch is on they fail time and time again. 2012 GF, 10 in a row to Geelong. I'm OVER IT.

Wow how soft are you? FFS no wonder you live in Brisbane :thumbsu:

I think we all know that today was pathetic, however it's Round 1 people. Round 1. Plenty of time to improve and get ourselves on track. Whilst disappointed overall, we have 21 games to make amends and get into the finals. Then the real season starts

Ye but only until we play the Cats again!!!!
Then it's all back to the drawing board again!!!

Hawthorn was LUCKY!

Let me tell you why... Brisbane stacked their foward line with talls and bombed it on their heads on Saturday and got mercilessly, totally, comprehensively destroyed by the Western Bulldogs. You guys stacked your foward line with talls (Buddy, Roughy, Hale, Gunston - plays as a tall) and only just got beaten.

Would of thought that you guys might of learnt something from last year's grand finals about bombing it aimlessly into the foward line but apparently not!

The reality is your midfield was well on top for long periods of the game, defence held up pretty well even without lake and your best player in hodgey is still to come back into the side. But your going to keep losing the big games against quality opposition unless you sort out your entry into the foward-line. Whitecross is a loss, accept that, but you can't continue to simply belt it in the air hoping that hale, buddy or roughy will be under it and then watching as the oppostions mid-size halfbacks waltz out of the backline pressure free.

does hale give you enough in the big games to warrant his complete lack of pressure on rebounding opposition defenders?

Yep, correct the team we fielded coupled with the way we went to our forwards we were very lucky to only be beaten by that margin.

And NO not that much is really learned from this coaching group!

We need a wake up call after losing the grannie? **** me

oh yes. a pre-season is a long time in footy you know.

but don't think this will be the last wakeup call we have this year though. no no. a loss to richmond or brisbane or middle of the ladder team, midseason will be another wakeup call, and probably will have one more again before finals, just so the boys will be hurting. just need the boys to keep up the scoreboard pressure.

chin up.

I agree with the non contesting, in our forward line . In the last quarter they stood and watched like they weren't sure. I thought young Hill was hurt , didn't realise he just got subbed off. There were others who should have gone off before him. Liked young Jed, gutsy youngster. I suppose I should have known something was amiss when the over handballing began . To me that is players saying "here you have it, I don't know what to do with it." When Hawthorn go handball mad something is wrong.

That is Woodward :p Who by all means is the furthest thing from a peaheart. I do agree with Savage though, he is ordinary.

As soon as I posted, and wiped the tears from my eyes, I saw it wasn't Savage!:(

Gonna go and give myself an uppercut to make the afternoon complete. Sorry bout the mixup Champ!

Richmond loss I could handle ,but they ran out of legs too . But if we drop a game to Brisbane then my son is right , they are stuffed and this will not be our year.
I don't think things are that bad yet.

Probably better to give half the team an uppercut and knock some sense into them :p

I don't think it was any coincidence that Hill stopped being a factor after Chapman ironed him out with that late tackle (which was payed a DTG), and suspect that was why he was subbed.

Absolutely deplorable second half. To get within 7 points was quite remarkable to be honest.

I mean what did we expect? To actually heard Geelong?

Alright here's my "match review" for those that care to read it.

WARNING: criticism of Hawthorn players inside, if you find that offensive on principal then please direct your complains to... someone else. Thanks.

Roughead - Outclassed all day by better players. Didn't notice him hold a contested mark.
Lewis - Good in patches but didn't do enough. Seems to be spending less time in the midfield perhaps on account of his lack of pace.
Mitchell - What can you say? Only that we needed a couple more of him and I wouldn't blame him for being pissed at the lack of support he gets.
Gibson - Had a good game I thought, though his lack of size did show on a few occasions. Hardly his fault however.
Burgoyne - Did well in pressure situations, has a very cool head. Liked his game.
Hill - Dynamite in the first quarter then (understandably) eventually ran out of puff. Great game from the youngster, terribly pleasing to see.
Sewell - Typical warrior effort from Brad. No complaints here.
Birchall - Use of the ball was generally great as usual and he's such a tough competitor now.
Smith - Very disappointing. Doesn't like physical contact, poor disposal at times and doesn't get enough ball.
Guerra - Solid down back, a few stuff ups but I can forgive him.
Gunston - Would've been great had he played, who took his place in the side?
Hale - Mediocre in the ruck and didn't have a great game up forward. In other words pretty much your average Hale game vs quality opposition.
Savage - Not convinced. Gets caught holding the ball far too often, only at his best when running in a straight line with little traffic around him.
Bruest - Not a great game, closely marked and was a bit fumbly. Missed a crucial set shot under pressure which is hardly unusual.
Franklin - Did very little, as he always does against Geelong it seems. Perhaps we need to pay him more to increase his motivation.
Stratton - Some really nice clutch defensive efforts.
Shoenmakers - Very good game from Shoey, he can really hold his head up after the way he played today.
Shiels - Didn't notice him much which seems to be the norm.
Puopolo - Great at drawing high contact and competed hard. Not convinced he's best 22 material.
Rioli - Some nice clearances and he competed well all day, but didn't have a big influence.
Anderson - Nice bump, limited gametime.
Bailey - Had a great first half in particular, really gave the mids an armchair ride in the 2nd quarter. His work around the ground wasn't bad either!
Clarkson - Most overrated coach in the league? For mine he would have to go close. Playing Anderson (first gamer) on Selwood in the last quarter anyone?
Gameplan - Absolute rubbish. Tires players out enormously, doesn't generate enough easy scoring chances, usually fails against teams with great defenses ie. Geelong, Sydney, Collingwood of a few years back.
Entire Team - Mentally weak, still allowing oppositions to get huge run-ons, still woeful at set shots. Today was almost an exact replica of 2012 GF.
