Autopsy Hawks vs Cats, Rd 15 2013

I didn't watch the game but I read the whole match day thread and this one
The common theme is we didn't come to play - well that seems to have been the catch cry for weeks now and luckily we have kept winning - although there were a couple where the hawks got lucky. What concerns me is that maybe we played our best in the first seven and we are now a team with tired bodies and a mounting injury toll. Port will absolutely smash us in the middle next week and there fitness is unbelievable - tbh I think the next few weeks is going to bring us right back to the pack.

I too am tired of the usual suspects trotting out the line that we will beat them when it counts - what a load of crock. The mental strength they now have over the hawks is unbelievable and the bs about how they played with finals intensity and we didn't - why is that - why is it that we didn't bring the same intensity as they did against Sydney.

As for line in the sand - what a joke. If no-one went to the aid of a champion of the club like Sammy against a handbagger like mackie then who do you think would really fly the flag against those strong bodied players at the cats - it would be an embarrassment.

The cats are better than the hawks - they are well coached, they have good skills and each and everyone knows there role and stick to it - simple really

I hate the words next time. That is BS and you all know it. If we have not learnt our lesson against this mob in 5 years then we never will. And this whole notion "we will get them in a final" what a joke. The last time we played them in a final, they got us by 31points. And I can guarantee it will happen again.
Geelong are just sitting back, just waiting for that opportunity to prove to the AFL community that 2008 was lucky!! And I tend to agree now.

Last night proved that we do not cope with high pressure games, ala 2012 GF. Too many go missing, Hodge, Sewell, Lewis, Burgouyne, Franklin, Roughead etc. The only exception to that list is Sam Mitchell. You know its all good earning the big money, pransing around beating the bottom sides, but when it is asked of them to really stand up and earn your money, well, its a bloody farce!!! Easy money I rekon and they know that the club will always make up some bs excuse.

I dont have any confidence in this years finals series. Because I know that a Sydney, Geel type will turn the pressure up on us and we will all curl up in the fetal position and get the shit kicked out of us.

Your joking right?. Complaining bout the umpires. They did their best to get you over the line tonight just like round 1 and you couldn't do it ( not to mention last years GF ) just be greatfull they got you across the line against Carlton
Even though the free kick count was 15 - 22, Clarkson mentioned in his presser that the Hawks should have got more frees and hopefully that turns around in the next few weeks.

We lost it in the first quarter. Long bombs forward and poor disposal killed us. Gave the forwards a very hard time. The cats slowed down the pace when they got the opportunity and set up around the ground to take advantage.

After the first quarter we began to settle down and compose ourselves - we restricted them to one goal in two quarters. Not a bad defensive effort in anyone's language.

The game broke open in the last quarter when Geelong took their foot off our throat and it nearly cost them dearly. We got up momentum very quickly and nearly got the bickies.

Geelong were clearly the best most of the night. They kept to their game plan. They forced us into errors and sloppy thinking.

Before this match I was one of the people who said a loss wouldn't mean much. But the way this happened I feel very concerned about the mental scars, especially if we meet them in the finals. I can't imagine the cats thinking they could ever loose against us, even if they were ten goals down. Mentally they will know they can win. Mentally we will know we can loose. That will make them very tough to beat.

I know I shouldn't bite, but I'm gonna.
10 posts and join date of a month ago. You won again for Christ sake, just bugger off.
Every team has good and bad runs with the umpires and we have had our share of both.
Maybe this season we are just lucky to be getting a fair go finally.

I still cant believe we throw Hale up forward against the Cats. He is useless. Slow. Plays into their hands.

I have said this for a while but we have to change the makeup of the side against the Cats. Drop a Sewell or Lewis, bring in another small AND play Grimley instead of Hale.

Recurring themes from the GF - poor kicking at goal and a midfield which is loaded with personnel that cannot keep up running both ways.

Thought Hilly was brilliant. Does need some work on his tackling but his composure is AMAZING with the ball.

It's laughable that we have this BS Kennett curse hanging over us!!
Nothing to do with any curse or how good the Cats are, it's all to do with our mind set going into these games!
We go into these games scared of losing rather than knowing we can win!!!

And that's it in a nutshell.

It's just Groundhog Day. From our attitude, the way we play into their hands, the players that go missing and of course the result.

And the worst part is, until the club get a shrink in, it will continue to happen and there's nothing we can do.

This. Let them circle jerk. We can't beat them right? Just like we couldn't beat them in 2008. They have our measure etc. Stage is set now. We have nothing to lose in September. They do.

Nothing to lose in a grand final? You must be joking. Both teams in a GF have EVERYTHING to lose. Especially a team that should have won it the year before.

You are obviously close to at least one of the players at HFC. After each loss we hear the same thing, "the players are hurting, we'll learn from this, just need a bit more composure", yet nothing seems to change. They don't learn from our losses to the cats, they don't show any hurt from previous games (well, except for the mental scars), and they certainly don't show any composure.

This isn't about a curse against the cats, it is about our inability to turn the tide when a team turns the heat up on us. Sydney did it twice last year, Geelong have done it for years, and Adelaide even did it in the prelim last year with the only thing saving our blushes being the massive gap in talent between the two teams. Now I know you will cite the comebacks against Geelong and Sydney last year when we were 50 points down, but showing fight when then there is nothing left to lose is not tough. The tough thing to do would be to show that fight as soon as the heat is turned up. But we don't.

I could cop these losses if I saw us playing good footy, and losing to a better side. But again last night, the team I saw was nothing like what we have seen for most of the season. If we played that footy all season, we would be middle of the road. So why the big drop in performance every time we play the cats?

Hale should go for a more agile forward. (Grimmers/Lowden)
Roughy needs to park his bones forward permanently.
Whilst it's our gameplan, having Normie floating down back draws their defender towards the play and when we do get it forward it's either to Hale who can't kick or Franklin who is getting double/triple teamed. Slingshot goal coming up on the counter.
Rinse repeat, they must love playing us as we beat ourselves!
We are just so stupid how we position our forward artillery around the ground.

WOW. If that's the case I actually feel confident that we will beat em next time if they haven't actually learnt anything. He is in serious denial if he thought they had a bad run with the umps. I honestly felt they genuinely kept the hawks in the game.

The usual suspects miss bread and butter set shots again...

Hale
Hodge
Roughead
Breust
Franklin

Lucky the cats missed plenty but the above have time and time again failed to kick important set shots.

Thought we were outcoached too. Bartel sweeping in the back half. Pods continually taking Gibbo up the ground to break up our defence. Mitchell being dragged deep into defence.

Simpkin was very good in the clinches.
Stratts was excellent.
Lake showed his value in the end.
Gunstan got a pass for me.
Whitecross is a very good player. Great to have him back.
Duryea was solid enough with the ball but still some bad mistakes with his trademark fumble, kick across goal and falling over.
Sav was ok but still has a fair way to go.
I still want to see Cyril off a HBF as a sweeper.

Hodge Sewell Lewis Hale Gibson Breust Smith Bailey franklin all didn't perform. That is a big group.

The Cats have too many linebreakers for us. Pure and simple. We cannot handle the running bursts.

So you forfeit any right to celebrate a Hawthorn flag this year, right?

kill yourself. franklin was monstered every time he went near it. not only did this deny us goal scoring opportunities, given how badly coached and unaccountable we were playing, it gifted you guys shots on the rebound.

Agreed.
This notion we will flick a magical switch should be face them in September is laughable.
We can't beat them in a pressure Home and away game. Add 10% more pressure for a final and 50% for a GF and we are gonna beat them? Please!
I admire the blind faith, but it ain't gonna happen.
Round 17, 2008, we were unlucky because of who we had out and Hodgey's mind was with his missus at hospital. Plus, we were a grunt side, not pussy's.
Maybe some of the leaders and big money earners should realise it's them that controls what happens. It's the clutch players and leaders that need to drag the bottom 6 over the line, not watch them be the top 6 contributors cause the big boys have gone missing....again!
What we need is a leading teams session. There's a few too many relying on ego and getting picked on past deeds. Too many softies and blokes that sheepdog stats in these games to make it look like they did more than they did.
That's why we lost the GF last year, that's why we won't win one again this year. Reputation doesn't win you matches. Well not against the good sides like Geelong anyway.

I think he's talking about how Lonergan never brings a date to these matches and hangs off Franklin all night.
The umps were fine apart from the usual Franklin two step. But that's not isolated to this fixture.

Are we supposed to take this seriously because you are a Cats supporter? Or are you that simple minded?

When we had the momentum in the last, Buddy was held not once but 4 times off the ball. Footy goes in to your forward line for a goal. Not blaming the umps for the loss but you are completely deluded if you think they kept us in it. I suggest going to spec savers.

I have at least 50 years left in my life and I'm certain to never see Hawthorn beat Geelong again

I expect there will be a change of coach, strategy, tactics, structures and playing personnel in the next 50 years. That will give us a 30% chance of beating the best.

Bias does funny things to people.
Ask those people booing what the dirty dog Sam Mitchell did to Corey.... :D
Boo Sam Mitchell for getting tackled an accidentally falling on someone's head, call someone God who was involved in a drug death of a girl in a hotel room. Strange huh?

And they can beat us 100 times more and still won't get that cup.
Our players need a shrink to get over their mental demons, some of their supporters need a shrink to get over losing 2008.
