This bullno.2 chip chip pass pass at centre half forward. Why DONT THEY BOMB IT TO THE GOALSQUARE against this one team!
Probably because Taylor and Lonergan are usually camped in our goalsquare hoping we do exactly that.

Yes, because nearly all those center breaks was a Hawks player throwing it on the boot and bombing it long in hope. Geelong's defenders are smart and play in front knowing this will happen.

What we really needed was more center clearances fed out to guys like Cyril & Hill who can carry the ball with pace and lineup a target on the run.

It's not just in the centre square. Was all around the game. I love sewelly, but he is a huge culprit. Early in the last, before Geelong had kicked goals, Hill took a mark near the wing, spotted up Sewell and ran past for the handball, Sewell instead just turned and bombed, instead of hitting up Buddy we put it into a ground fight and he was outnumbered. Went down the end for a goal. It's these sorts of things we need to cut out against Geelong. We did it so often it wasn't funny.

Why we haven't learnt this I don't know.

They were quicker than us , pure and simple.
Watching Hodge, Lewis and Sewell chasing tail was embarrassing.
Some courages decisions need to be made, even though we are on top.
Hodge to the back line
Lewis to the 2nds or forward line
Sewell or Sheils fighting for a spot
Time to add some youth in the midfield, athletic young players , i know we have them.
There is no way we will win the big one unless we make these changes , Geelong did a Sydney to us.

We completely changed our game plan and tried to bomb it long into the forward line for the entire first half, and then when we did get an opportunity in front of goal we butchered it. Not sure if the Hail Mary tactics were an attempt to conserve energy because Clarkson was wary of Geelong running over us again, but they frustrated the hell out of me and played into geelong's hands.

As bad as we played, we were completely overshadowed in the shite stakes by the entire channel 7 commentary team.

Can't have any complaints, the cats played better, harder and were first to the ball all night. A thoroughly deserved victory.

Apart from a 5 minute spell in the last we were rubbish all night. Skills in general were deplorable over all 4 qtr's and yet another example that we're well and truly soft between the ears.
true we only played well when we had nothing to lose, then when it got close back to normal shit kick and hope.pathetic the scoreboard lied.

My thoughts for what it's worth ...

1) Clarko did not show his cards ... As tempting as it was ... Massive credit ...

2) Hill is a star ... Anyone who does not see it is clueless ... Faaarking clueless ...

3) I feel something special this year ... This team is focused again ... If they remember what they can do wearing their almighty jumpers they can do it again ...

Ha. Knew this board would go into meltdown!

Disposal efficiency of 66%. That says it all. It was 63% in the first qrt! Can't win a game with that. we panicked, particularly in the first qtr, handballing, bombing into the forward 50 with no crumbers, cats able to move it out to easily.

After first qrt, I would say we kinda were on top a little (but were still lucky). We panicked all night, rushed when we had the footy, too reactive.

I thought Mitchell, Hill, Lewis, Gunston were good. Players like Buddy, Rough 50/50 - hard when delivery into the 50 is ordinary. Hodge quiet. But good to see Lake recover from his shocker of a first qtr.

Would love to have won - still think we have the cattle to beat them in a final. Go Hawks

Someone else who gets it.

We're only slow in the midfield cause we let them play their style. We were told we were slow after round 1 and won 12 straight. We've been able to play our game. For some reason, we let them play their game against us. Not sure why or how we stop it.

all the hysterical children try and get a hold of yourself - take a look at the ladder if you need to.

there is a curse, that game confirms it, until its broken we need to keep doing what we've been doing, which is not lose to anyone else.

If you have a doubt about a curse - have a look at the 2 soft umpiring decisions that gave us shots at goal that we couldnt take, the interchange infringement that is confirmed wrong, the buddy bouncer that bounced the wrong way ..

- for the first time i think in a few weeks we won the inside 50s but lost,
- hodge, roughy, buddy was quiet for the first time in a few weeks,
- Lake played like Shooey of < 2012 in the first quarter.
- the highest and most freely scoring forward line in the comp got shut down by the flood - which leads me to:
- Geelong can flood with the best of them (Freo)

Hill needs a partner in crime breaking the lines and was a revelation in tonights game. I'm hoping the boys look to him more often because he is a weapon.

Where do we go from here ? Current group wearing the brown and gold not quite good enough. To all the optimists , face up to where we are at, very good team bereft of absolute killer instinct, die in the ditch , bleed for the cause. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not lose faith ...

Have you read, 'the hard way'...

We are Hawthorn ...

It's not over till its over ...

I think I have just come to expect us falling short against Geelong.

If Jeff Kennett commits Seppuku ( Harakiri) in the centre of the MCG would this erase the curse. Maybe as head of Beyond Blue, ritual suicide may not be such a good look but he should do the honorable thing and fall on his sword.

Here's what happened - Geelong's midfield put us under immense pressure and we were unable to cope and adjust out gameplan accordingly until the 3rd quarter, and even then only with limited success.

Our midfielders weren't bombing it long to the forward line because that's what Clarkson wanted, they were doing it because they had bugger all time to get rid of the ball before being tackled almost every time they got hold of it - something made worse by our lack of pace and run & carry (a far better way of getting through a congested midfield than trying to land a pinpoint pass) and our preference to kick instead of handball, at least in the first half.

As both teams tired Geelong's pressure slackened off and more space appeared allowing us to play our usual style more effectively. Not surprisingly we began clawing back at their lead. Unfortuantely the damage was done in the first half when we were fumbling like mad, seemingly because most of the team was shocked at how fiercely Geelong were attacking contests.

Arent we supposed to have sublime foot skills? Why were we bombing every ball long? Geelong shut us down really well but there must be a more calculated move than just bombing it forward. I mean Gary Lyon's article in The Age this Friday basically said this exact thing. When I read it said to myself, we couldn't possibly fall into that trap again could we. 24hrs later here we sit.

They don't give us space which was obvious throughout the game. This combined with nerves is perilous to the team effort because players don't think they have as much time as they do as happened in the first half and so all the planning and structures goes to hell in a hand basket. On top of that you have Bartel playing the +1 role down back and as usual, playing anywhere he wants to play and they did as they pleased. You have a potent forward line but they don't seem to have much up their sleeve when a good team floods and players a disciplined structured game. Beyond tonights game you have Fremantle and Sydney who play the same way. Not sure Clarkson and staff have the answers as they haven't for several years now. Personally, I think we should be behind all this teams in terms of premiership favouritism. We still don't seem to have the game to win a premiership. I think that is why the media tend to refer to our team as the most talented but not necessarily the best. Time will tell but there isn't much left because the finals are just around the corner.

Kicked straight from set shots we would have won & considering we had so many players down means to me that geelong are hardly unbeatable.

And just 2 losses for the year at this stage - NOT 1 POSTER ON THIS FORUM WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN HAPPY WITH THAT!

This. Let them circle jerk. We can't beat them right? Just like we couldn't beat them in 2008. They have our measure etc. Stage is set now. We have nothing to lose in September. They do.

Correction if I knew those two losses were to these cretins, I for one would not be happy!

No other team this year has put us under pressure for 4 quarters the way Geelong has, which was why we weren't able to play our game - because they didn't allow us to. Worse yet we clearly lacked a plan B and panicked when we were forced to deviate from team rules.

In some ways this loss will help, it will (hopefully) show the coaches what to avoid next time we play Geelong. Or at least it would had this not happened on 10 previous occasions. What's frustrating isn't the losses, its losing in the same damn way every time!
