Autopsy Hawks vs Port featuring the Great Escape

What was with Gunstan only trying to take chest marks? Cost us numerous times when he didn't put the hands out!

Hand injury?

Agree, has the best dukes in the team and was going all jeff farmer every contest.

Rough had a fantastic game yesterday but he had a chance to really make a stand with a couple of minutes to go in the centre and he didn't go hard enough. Port player half his size spooked him.

He didn't get off the leash at any time and he fumbles around very slowly.

I don't rate him for big games but he's depth. Id rather Cheney
Cheney had a blinder in the qualifying final vs port melbourne. A little quieter against willy though.

Just watching the replay, how was that not HTB against Polec? Doc just stood there as he knew it was, but Stevic didn't want to pay it...

Stinker against Spangher there too

Holding the man against Rough not paid

Free against Spangher with 2.20 to go, what was that for? Looked like has was being held out of the contest

Free to Wantsfrees against Gibbo, but yeah the call that we got to Hodge cost Port the game! FFS

I'm still stumped as to how Lake didn't get a free in the final 20 seconds when Mon-frees was hanging off his arm like a whiny 5 year old in a lolly store.

Spangher will be extremely fortunate to play next week. Was clearly our worst player.

Highest amount of clangers on the ground, highest frees against on the ground.

I know he's not suited to the port small forwards. But he was moved forward in the second half and was clearly beaten by Carlisle. Including that contest in the final minute in our forward pocket and he just had to spoil and was easily out marked by Carlisle.

Unfortunately the only alternative is schoenmakers.

The Port fans are carrying on about all the premierships they're going to win because they have such a young list. The emphasis placed on average ages of lists are pure folly are pointed out in this response. I think other Hawks fans would be interested:

What's that got to do with it? Aren't we talking about Port? People talk about average ages on lists like it actually means something. It doesn't. Lists change rapidly in the current football environment and Port will be no different. They will have players lose form and be delisted, take better offers from other clubs, Sydney will decide they'll want a couple of your better players and just take them, and your list management team will see needs to strengthen in certain areas and trade to secure those players.

Hawthorn won a flag with the youngest list in 2008, by the time we won the flag in 2013 we only had 14 players left from the list in 2008. From that list, Franklin, Bailey, Ellis, Guerra and Osborne are no longer on the list, leaving only 9 players who were on the 2008 list still at the club. Only 9 players after 6 years, a staggering turnover of 66 players and yet the Hawks are still making Grand Finals. That's what it's all about, not having a list full of 22 year olds.

Agree. Collingwood one a flag with one of the youngest sides a few years ago, and since they have lost a heck of a lot of that team for varying reasons

Wow what a match, drank 6 pints of cider then went to work, that god we won cos it was the longest most painful shift of my life.
A few things from this match:
- langford is our most important player - we could not get our hands on it early, his aggression is second to none, his tackles are hard and always stick, he always seems to find a way and when the rest of the team can't and has an innate ability to lift those around him. Potential captain material in years to come.
- still found a way despite a few players being down - bruest, puopolo, ceglar, birchall, spangher.
- umpiring was disgraceful
- most biased pathetic commentating heard in recent memory
- am never watching a hawks prelim again
- we can absolutely beat sydney next week, they simply aren't as good as everyone makes them out to be

What a great game of footy yesterday...
We've booked our ticket says our great coach Clarko with a big smile on his face, 4 GF appearances in 7 years and 2 premiership cups already, and already the longest serving coach for our great club, win this GF and history will be in the making as the best coach ever.

Also you just can't not love Brandon Whitecross the ultimate team man!! Can't wait to have him back, He was very happy in the rooms for his good mate Suckling after missing out on the GF last year with his knee!

Congratulations Hawks, you were the better team on the day in the only stat that actually matters: the final score. We tried hard and gave you a scare, but in the end didn't hit our targets with anything like the kind of consistency you guys did. Enjoy the win and destroy the COLAs next week, I'll definitely be a Hawks supporter for the day!

Not only didn't he get a free, at one point I thought that the umpires were going to give Port a free kick at goal after the siren against Lake for holding the ball, likely the siren went before that happened, that's how bad the umpiring was in the last quarter....8 free kicks to port, 1 to the hawks in the last Q as a remember one poster stating,

Haven't read the whole thread but one thing that annoyed me was players getting into a position where they can take a shot on goal, but instead they try to give it off and the team ends up fluffing it.
Off hand, Suckling, Breust, Smith and maybe a couple more.

Obviously him posting that on an oppositions board was silly, but out of curiosity, IF Hawks lose next week, will your season be for zero, nada, etc too?
Absolutely it will as it is for all 17 team every year that don't win it. This aint soccer, there's no other cups, European qualifications, relegations etc. Just one prize and every AFL player and coach knows it. There will be other Hawk supporters (and other team fans) who will strongly disagree with me, so be it.

But your nothingess starts a week early, so kick back with a beer and watch the team that beat your 25 players (because even you know those 3 green maggots were on your side) play one more week.

Spangher shouldn't have played...............because there was no proper match-up!
Stratton should have taken Westhoff

Spangher must play next week..............because there is a match-up for him
Spot on, everyone saying he had a bad game...well...yeah it wasnt great though he played a forward role fair bit that helped Roughy who kick 6 because he's not double teamed. But 100% agree with you, that's not his proper role, wasnt an apt match up but next week there will be Goodes or Reid (assuming Lake and Gibbo for the 2 scumbag AFL funded mercenaries)

Too unselfish, probably need to take those chances next week.

Also one area of the game I was disappointed in last night compared to the qualifying final was the tackling. It wasn't a complete disappointment, but I felt the tackles stuck more in the previous game.

Hopefully more tackles will stick next weekend.

Alot of people saying Spang didn't have a match up - but in most contests he was either out positioned, out muscled, or just plain out marked. That isn't going to change against a taller forwardline or defence.

He DID make a contest most times and was at the contest alot - also probably lost less than 50% outright - but he didn't win many either.

Depending on how Cheney / Shoenmakers goes today - there may be a change. I really like Spang - but I love all the hawks and you have to have your best team on the park.

I think Spangher also just didnt have a great game, ignore match up theories. Could say the same of Poppy, Cegs, maybe Shiels and Mitchell by his standards. Spangs is allowed an off day and I still would have him ahead of Schoey next week (and I like Schoey, but not in his current body shape)
