Please don’t bring Barrett’s sliding doors rubbish here. That’s not the Hawthorn footy club in the media.

That’s a desperate article, trying to get clicks every week.

A recap of the Footy Classified episode (Sam Mitchell edition)

Sam is such an immense footy personnel. Listening to him speak I am constantly in awe of the way he is able to view things, with pessimism but also plenty of optimism & realism. You need a good mix of all 3 to be someone who is able to adequately look at your football club, or anything in life, to make the best decisions and communication is key within that. His ability to communicate within the media is in the top echelon of any coaches or media personalities that I can think of.

His smarts with the way he talks but incredibly and most importantly the way he views the game is superb. I could listen to him all day long, the views he had on many topics but also the way he delivered them and the way he never seems flustered and always calm is very much like the way he played football. With a tough mental edge added to it.

They spoke about a fair few things, the West Coast drama which included a lot of Adam Simpson. But also Collingwood currently, also included two players in specifics with John Noble & Darcy Moore. He spoke so well about the teams, players, and coaches. But also added in with Adelaide as well, Matthew Nicks and a few players he was able to get close with during the 2020 COVID bubble in Adelaide.

This leads into what he said in regards to us, or as Sam McClure stated, him being in the "hot seat".

Showing a clip of him in his press conference:
"When you're on the journey we are on, you know there's going to be steps forward. But unfortunately, some of those steps forward are going to be very, very, very small. And at the moment, I can't find too many positives out of today. We just had no answers for their game style in the end. They performed pretty well across the full four quarters. I think their work rate taught us a bit of a lesson today. I thought we just let out people down today, we just couldn't get anything going and you know credit goes to Gold Coast, they did a good job but I think our players and staff will be disappointed about the performance today."

Sam stated it was uncomfortable to rewatch his press conference, but not much had changed 24 hours on. He basically reiterated the fact that they were immensely disappointed and the fact they kicked the first three goals but couldn't get anything going after that and just didn't fire a shot at all.

Kane shows the vision of Sam talking to players on the bench and asking "We saw you move to the bench to try to get something going" and my opinion obviously it was mentioned on the day as it happened, clearly to get a clear communication to the players.

Sam responded saying he just needed a bit of energy into the game, there was a contest in the back pocket just prior which was his example. There was just a visible lack of energy in the group. The group had tried to get something going after halftime, but it was clear it wasn't going to be about tactics, it was going to be about effort, intensity, enthusiasm, etc. He said that sometimes going to the bench can help with the energy which is why he did, but "we struggled for the rest of the game, so it didn't have much if any effect".

Lloydo asked about how they prepared, Justin Longmuir being the example. But Sam stated they looked at how they prepared last year, and preparing for the game. They were confident with how they prepared and that there were no excuses for the performance. "We kicked the first three goals, so it wasn't about the start, we just weren't able to sustain it. Every team has lost after the bye, so there must be something in it, but I can't give a reason for it".

Sam was asked which team was the hardest to face this year, he said Round 2 against Sydney and the away game against Fremantle were the two hardest in his eyes.

They finished up Hawthorn specifics and went on to talk about byes, which was interesting. He mentioned with the young group that he has that he'd prefer a year, which he as a player was most happy about. Bye round 8 and round 18 with no finals bye. Because you could get through 8-9 rounds, have a break and refresh and do the same thing again and it was sort of split into three quarters. Rather than two halves. (Less players managed). Sam McClure mentioned a 1 week full week off. Sam jokingly said the AFL is a huge business and in that the media persons would love a week off for everyone because it would likely see alot of the media being able to also take a week off, directing towards Sam McClure, quite funny.

He spoke about the Sicily tackle, with definite support from Lloydo, said this:

Some small comments made by Sam on the Luke Jackson & Sean Darcy ruck duo, was just positive on how well they worked together.

Sam said the Cats are unstoppable at their best, and teams playing them later in the season will be weary. Which is pretty good praise from Sam.

On good call bad call. Sam asked Lloydo "Is Ben Keays the unluckiest man in football, in regards to him ripping off Mason Cox's glasses and running away, quite funny" Lloydo showed the vision and then said Ben Keays excuse was "I was trying to grab his jumper & didn't mean it". Yes you did Ben, own up to it. It's hilarious.

He was asked after Craig McCrae was asked in the press conference about what he was doing "rewatching the last quarter, a red wine replay?" "one glass tho, drink responsibly" while laughing and Sam got asked "what'd you drink last night Sam" "yeah nothing much pretty low grade" HAHAHAHA

To close. This was absolutely ****ing hilarious -

Well played Lloydo!

That was pretty much all, got bored so here.

Thanks SO much for this. Really enjoyed reading the breakdown.

I just watched footy classified with Sam and 1 thing really stood out to me…despite it going for 44 minutes plus ads and despite it usually feeling like much longer given the people on it, I was able to watch it on less time than in took to read the last few posts from Dominic03 .😩🤣

I would say mine would be a boring but shorter version but if you love Sam you’d watch it all easy

Halfway through the Purple SOB highlights that Sammy doesn't acknowledge Clarko in his HOF speech. I have my own theory on all this but would be interested to hear some others views on it all.

It's pretty clear their relationship isn't on good terms. And it seems obvious to me that it broke down around the time of the failed coaching handover and was exacerbated (at least on the Clarko side) with the cultural safety review report stories going public.

From what I've seen and heard it seems Sam's policy is to not talk about him unless forced to (eg. asked a direction question) but even then he clearly makes every effort to change the subject as smoothly and quickly as he can.

Was glaringly obvious.
Both the Geelong boys thanked every coach, including their under 10s coaches.
He fails to acknowledge the bloke he won 4 flags with, yet acknowledges Schwab.
A massive slap in the face.

He was in a no win situation

Mention Clarko and we have a media firestorm that probably drags other stuff back up for 48-72 hours .
His tone , expression everything would have been analysed within an inch if its life.
Safe bet is not to mention him , avoid the above for everyone personally involved and also respect Clarko's wishes for privacy at this time .

He did mention all coaches, players and staff as a thankyou. Normally a safe bet in an acceptance speech .

Clearly there is a wedge there . Clarko has fired shots at us ( the club Sam is now coaching ) also .
I think it gets resolved but we are a long way from that

I would also put money that every inductee missed a key person in there speech . It happens.

If my coach, who brought me in to take over from him, started to privately bad mouth me to players and afl figures alike, I would feel pretty negatively towards that person

Mitch has acted like a pro throughout this whole thing, while Alastair, has done the opposite

Who has he bad mouthed him to?
there was that report he was talking shit about Sam underperforming in big games to key North personnel. i assume it was just some bullshit taken out of context. like no doubt the Clarko stuff is.

In fact, I read a recap on some website (may have even be the HFC) where he did make explicit mention of Clarko.. so... not sure what's going on with that
