Wrong. Hawks did what they had to do by the rules of the AFL.
Correct. For reference below, once the HFC had the report outlining serious allegations they were duty bound by the AFL’s protocol to hand over the report to the AFL integrity unit.

I will pin this post, as it seems to be a constant query.

Yes, I had heard that story years ago. In fact, if my recall is correct Matthews still stands by the principle (that may be wrong, but he certainly doesn't deny the instruction). As far from normal as that level of attempted control is, it is still in a totally different realm to asking an employee to terminate a pregnancy - just mind blowing.

Oh absolutely many light years away - just goes to show how normalised this kind of bullshit intrusion into player’s personal lives the higher powers at football clubs think is though.

Utter disgrace.

All I want from this is action. If we've got members of staff who were aware/around/complicit when this was going on, they need to be moved on.

Kennett has to go... now.... preferably never to speak publicly again.

I want to see us make serious change from this- I would love to see the club get on the front foot and be fully transparent about this.

All I hope is that we don't shy away from anything, we don't excuse anything and that we continue to foster the current environment.

**** it hurts.

It’s an interview with people based on what they’ve informed the report. So the allegations are going to be in the report regardless - so it’s not as if the ABC are saying anything that won’t be public in the weeks to come anyway. Again it’s weird that people are focussing their ire on the ABC or Russell Jackson - denial is fun I guess.
I don't think it is having a go at Jackson. I think it is more stopping and saying "we don't necessarily have all the information and context here". The ABC article is three interviews with the victims and their portrayals of what occurred. It is hardly the whole report, which I do hope we get access too, albeit, in a way that protects players and their families confidentiality.

The Hawks have had 2 weeks with this report in their hands. Why has it taken so long for a statement? No wonder the ABC have run the story .
Have you ever heard of the AFL Intergrity Unit? The report was provided to them by Hawthorn and they have been pulling the strings on when things get released subject to them doing their own investigation to gather the facts from both sides.

It would serve absolutely no one if Hawthorn came out straight away with allegations from one side and the other never being heard.

If everything (or really anything) alleged in this article is true, it is staggering beyond measure that any employer would seek to control the personal and family lives of its employees to the extent described.
If the contents of the article were just ' internet rumours' involving any employer in any industry I would dismiss them as ridiculous because the allegations overstep the acceptable actions of an employer so significantly.
I am really struggling to get my head around the idea that this could possibly be true, yet at this stage there is no reason to believe that it isn't.

Yep. I cannot fathom that this actually happened the way it was reported this morning, and so have to keep reminding myself that I have no current evidence to deny that it did. Those named need to be given their opportunity to respond.

Horrific.

Yes the report was sickening but can we all take a chill pill until all parties have spoken.
People saying they won’t renew their membership over this is a bit dramatic seeing as though this happened years ago and all people mentioned are no longer at the club. I’m sure the club recently have been doing all they can to correct this and make it a better environment.

Absolutely disgusted. If Jeff isn’t gone by the end of this week I’ll be done.
I just have no words, nothing family about this at all. Nothing Human about it

A very good point.

Urgh, this is horrible and I'm feeling a little crook after reading that.

I guess we now need to see what the club's response to this review that they requested is - actions, not words though.

I'm pretty shaken. I thought all this amateur hour macho "the club" style BS was all history by now with high performance managers and sports psychologists being more the norm. Just shattered for the experiences those young people were subjected to.

I've got some thinking to do over the off-season :sadv1:

Is it just Jeff's head you want?

Anyone that is still at the club that was involved needs to go.

As for Clarko and Fagan then that's up to their respective clubs and the AFL.

Opening paragraphs of the story are pretty definitive:

An external review commissioned by the Hawthorn Football Club will reveal allegations that key figures at the AFL club demanded the separation of young First Nations players from their partners, and pressured one couple to terminate a pregnancy for the sake of the player's career.

The review document, handed to Hawthorn's senior management two weeks ago and now with the AFL integrity unit, will allege that club staff involved include four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson and former assistant Chris Fagan, now the coach of the Brisbane Lions.

Uses the word ‘will’ repeatedly. I’d suggest that Jackson has read the report.

Yeah you may be right. They seem to know the broader scope of allegations but when they're saying 'will' it is in reference to things they've uncovered from their own investigation

However when discussing the specific contents they revert to 'we believe' etc. They also make a point of mentioning the HFC hasn't released the report yet. I think the article mentions that the HFC review interviewed something like 20 First Nations people?

My assumption is they have accessed some parts of it, likely through their own investigation, but not the full thing. I just hope, if this is the case, the full review isn't even more horrifying

Anyway it's a pointless argument as we don't know for sure right now. And it makes no difference to the severity and disgusting nature of the allegations

But at least some clarity on this topic might prevent the "ABC evil left woke agenda" crowd from being able to mindlessly deny

Out of curiosity I headed to the norf board (yeah I know) to be greeted with a poster invoking the term "cancel culture". FFS.

Bloody cancel culture. Remember the good old days when middle management could intimidate young people into making life altering decisions about their unborn children. Bloody kids today are just soft.

The last bit in particularly. Cancelling your membership is a purial response. Maintaining your membership and demanding action is necessary and ESSENTIAL.

I am trying to keep politics out of this, JGK would not have approved or sanctioned such behaviour. Nor should he !!

Disgusted.

Those who tried to sweep the cyril red flags under the carpet should be ashamed. Turns out just the tip of the iceberg.

Fortunately the club does not have challenge of having Clarkson, Fagan, Burt still employed. Just Jeff who symbolically should go but this wasn't necessarily on his watch as I understand. More Newbold - surely he can't survive on commission?

We need to take and own the hits, be on the front foot, take meaningful actions and deliver long term sustainable change.

Don’t worry there will be people who approve of all this. They will be outraged by “cancel culture” and demand it occur.

The finger pointing at Kennett - if the timeframe aligns with Fagan being at the club and wielding influence then that would make Newbold the president at the time as Fagan was promoted to GM of Footy Operations in 2013.
