JLC,

that is one of the most ill-informed posts I have ever read. Pure garbage. Have you no idea about football history?

Essendon and Carlton are only rivals because of 1999 are they? Ummm, yeah right? Ha ha ha. We will just forget about their Grand Final match-ups in 1908, 47, 49, 62, 68, and 1993. We will just forget about Neale Danihers goal in the dying seconds in 1981 to give Essendon the game.

We will just forget about John Colemans 100th goal coming in the dying seconds of the 1949 Grand Final against Carlton. We will just forget about the 1968 Grand Final won by Carlton over Essendon by 3 points. We will just forget about the 1947 Grand Final, won by the Blues over the Bomber by one f*cking point.

I suppose when Essendon and Carlton met in the 1993 Grand Final, they weren't rivals then, eh? You idiot.

All three of Essendon, Colligwood and Carlton are huge rivals with each other. They are rivals because they have been the 3 most successful clubs, and they have been up at the top of the ladder with each other for most of the 105 years of the VFL-AFL. That's what makes a rivalry. If clubs are continually successful, and are always in the finals with each other, then the rivalry will be there.

Essendon and Collingwood, for example, have been traditional rivals going way back to their Grand Final match-ups in 1901, 1902, and 1911. When the 2 clubs met in 1990, they were still great rivals due to both clubs success, but incredibly it was the first Grand Final match-up since 1911. It re-ignited an already ancient rivalry.

You seriously have no idea about football mate. I know that Carlton vs Collingowod is huge. i admit it. But for you to say that Essendon vs Carlton only happened after 1999 shows how sad you are. You seriously know nothing about football if you think that. Essendon and Carlton are the 2 most successful clubs, and have played in 6 Grand Finals head-to-head. it didn't just happen in 1999, you idiot.

That would be like me claiming that Carlton vs Collingwood is only a rivalry due to 1970.

Whatever DAN...........there is no way that Essendon Carlton is bigger than Collingwood Carlton.............I dont care what statistics or quotes or whatever you want to throw up, Collingwood Carlton are the traditional rivals of the AFL.

The Essendon Carlton rivalry and hatred intensified in 1999 when Essendon choked. I still think in the eighties the Hawthorn Essendon rivalry was Essendons main rivalryhich was based arounds both clubs success.

Maybe from an Essendon point of view Essendon Carlton is the biggest rivalry. Im sure however that Collingwood and Carlton supporters will agree that ours is the biggest rivalry.

Collingwood is the most hated club and i would not have it any other way. Is it any surprise that the biggest grand final crowd ever was between Collingwood and Carlton ?? The next biggest finals clash crowd was also between Collingwood and Carlton. Im not going to go back through the books quoting grand finals played etc etc. Next time listen to when an interivew is done with a former Collingwood or Carlton player and see which team they enjoyed beating the most.

Collingwood Carlton does not rely on both clubs success to remain the intense rivalry. Irrespective of the ladder positions the rivalry remain intense and will continue to remain so.

JLC,

There is no such as thing as one rivalry. Carlton vs Collingwood is one of many rivalries. it doesnlt help it, whe you havn't played a close memorable clash against Carlton for over a decade!

Essendon vs Hawthorn was just an 80's thing. Essendon vs Carlton has been more enduring through the years. Grand Final crowds are largely irellevant. They are all sellouts.

In 1968., Essendon and Carlton played infront of the biggest crowd in Australian sport history (118,000). That was beaten in 1971 and 1970 (119,000, and 121,000 respectively). But that is not an issue. All GF;s are sellouts.

Trust me, Essendon and Carlton have been rivals through the years. Yes, I know Carlton and Collingwood have been too. I now that. But Essendon and Carlton were massive rivals in the 1940's.

Do give you an example of the historial nature os Essendon vs Carlton, at the end of 1968, the two clubs had met in 5 Grand Final. At the time, Carlton and Collingwood had met in 3, with the last being 1938. Essendon and Carlton go waaaaaaaaaaay back. Carlton and Collingowod do to. But you must remmeber that Essendon and Carlton have won 16 flags each.

And don't go assuming you're so hated all the time. I was barracking for you on the weekend against tht Carlton scum. I don't hate you as much as I used to, because you have been so shit.

I reckon deep down, you would have glady coped a defeat against Carlton, if it meant you could beat us on Anzac day. That would hjave made your year so far, and I would have still been hearing it, if we had lost. But of course we won in front of 84,000.
