Roast How diabolical is our midfield?

I'd drop McHenry and keep Sholl, and Schoenberg for Cook. Sholl has far better output and is way more dangerous as a player in open field then McHenry.
I don't mind Sholl as a backup wingman, but imo he hasn’t got the body to play every week. There is a big gap between his best & worst... which is usually after playing a few games in a row.

McHenry is our best sub option imo... though we should also be using Sloane too as he is at his most effective later in games.

There's no way any club would give a high draft pick for a player that has failed to live up to the massive hype pre-draft post his ACL performance wise.
Talked about on this board as the big bodied mid we need yet he has played so little actual midfield right back to juniors right through to now. Played mostly forward as a junior and a mostly a mix of half back, wing and half forward at the Sun's.

Sure you'd take a chance on him if he came at the right price mostly in hope he could live up to the potential he showed prior to his ACL but what is the right price considering this is his 4th year into his AFL career and we're still at the "potential" stage?
It’s actually his 3rd year. Was taken in the 2020 draft just before Pedlar from memory. He was also coming off an ACL in his draft year so hardly played in his first year of AFL.

he has certainly under performed so far at GC, but that is precisely why he is potentially available. He just looked a star at underage level, playing for the Murray Bushrangers and Vic Country, and being born in SA is someone we should be very very keen to get.

That maybe true but neither of them are best 22 players in a good team. We couldnt trade them for a bag of peanuts to Collingwood or Port Adelaide. They are not AFL quality players long term. We complain about our midfield then keep arguing about selecting the same mediocrity. because the Sanfl form rules the roost. Like the literal definition of stupid is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. That is exactly whats happening with Nicks selection policy.

So no one to come up in the Sanfl but Nicks only plays same players? Not at my best at the moment but what are you proposing should happen

I really don't get the significance placed on where a player is born on this board especially given they've lived the majority of their youth elsewhere?

Is he available though considering he's contracted and they've invested so much time in him already?

If King doesn’t play him in the next few weeks expansion team history suggests he would be. They have a plethora of high picks - and plenty more to bring in this year.
He is likely to be on a decent wage for his output $400/500k given he resigned a second contract and is already well behind some of their other young players
History suggests they move these types of players on to clear space for the next high pick if they can get something back
Whether we or anyone else are asking the question though remains to be seen

Right, being from SA had nothing to do with us getting Rankine and Dawson, just coincidence.😂

I have no idea wether he is actually gettable, I was just replying to your post stating he wasn’t worth much now, but I think if we offered enough we would get him. Fact is if we want another gun midfielder to add to this team then I think he is worth the gamble. He ticks all the boxes for me. He’s tall, which compliments Laird, Soligo and Rachelle, he has beautiful disposal, which our game plan revolves around, and he breaks forward of stoppages, which is vital to fully exploit our very talented forward line.

if there is a better option available then brilliant. Just not sure who.

I would happily give a pick 28 or later for him - it becomes a bit of lottery then anyway and so probably worth the punt.
Remember a lot of this comes down to the fact we don’t have much of a history bringing quality non SA boys here.
On his Road to the Draft interview Hollands was essentially asking the Crows to draft him - and if we had of got the band 1 compo for a Crouch I have little doubt we would have picked him

And so he is a shot at an elite junior talent that we rarely get the chance at.

If we could get a Finn Callaghan to come here for a $1m a year or something then I would be all in. Even a Flanders would be a good option but we just don’t seem to jag those guys or perhaps we don’t go aggressively enough at them

Born, bred and RAISED in SA and played all their junior footy in SA 🤣
He was classed as a forward/mid at draft time even though he'd played so little actual midfield, so I'm just not so sure where this big bodied mid comes from, at best he was a "potential" big bodied mid.
Your quote “I really don't get the significance placed on where a player is born on this board”
if you don’t think that a place that someone is born and spent the first half of their life makes a difference then I’m sorry I disagree.

I know he played plenty forward as a junior, but you could say that about hundreds of players that ended up in the midfield. Not sure if you know much about him in his early career, but his coaches had planned for him to play as a full time mid in his draft year, and he had indeed been doing this when he hurt his knee.

Laird was a back pocket early, Dawson was a half back. Don’t let what you read about a player as a junior influence you into believing that’s the only position they can play. Make no mistake if he succeeds at AFL level it will be as a midfielder.

I'm not talking about reading it, I saw Elijah play numerous times on live NAB League streams, several times live right in front of me...he played mostly forward in all bar one game at the Nationals in those games, his overhead prowess his standout attribute in those games.

An almost identical draft bio to last year's draftee Brayden George right down to the ACL and talk of being a top end draft pick prior to the injury, talked about as a potential future big bodied mid but had played almost all of his junior football as a marking forward.

Like I said if the price is right I'm fine with us having a crack to see if indeed he can be the big bodied mid people seem to covet on this board.

I think most would agree that Hollands isn’t necessarily the player that can make the difference for us however of players who would most likely would be open to coming to us he is a genuine prospect. We desperately need to turn over our Sanfl mids (Hateley, Brown and Crouch) and get new options in this year that might make us better.
And the options out there are pretty minimal. You mention Flanders and I agree he looks like he has the speed and power to be an option for us. Seems very few options available this year though. Most young ones are locked in and most quality older mids are locked in as well

Will Phillips is hardly a fair comparison given his health and injury issues and who wouldn't jump at the chance to swap Schoenberg for Campbell right now in view of his recent form and that laser leg?
I was responding to the ridiculous claim that his output is lower than literally all mids. I picked two very high picks to show its nonsense.
Agree Campbell is starting to look good, but writing off Schoenberg is stupid.

Laird would be a pretty bad half-back these days I think. They have moved him out of the middle a bit so far this year - round 1 was the first time Laird attended less than two thirds of CBAs in a completed game since 2020. But I don't see any other role he's going to be effective in.

He's being comprehensively outplayed by Crouch so it does create a selection problem if the feeling is they are too similar, and I think the club does feel that way as indicated by fewer CBAs in round 1.

Of the potential midfielders on the list that should be given a go, Soligo, Rachele, Rankine and Pedlar were given a total of 9 CBAs total between them compared to Laird, Crouch and Dawsons 68 CBAs total

I hate to say the obiovus but Rankine, Rachele and Pedlar are forwards. Soligo is a winger. None of them should be in the centre. This is why we fail. We need genuine mids not pinch hit mids.

How did we failed if none of them were in there? Rankine started in the midfield (had 7 CBA) last week and looked good but only had 3 last night. Rachele played midfield in the first 7 weeks last year and average 20 disposals and kick 10.10 but only had 1 CBA last week and 1 last night. Same with Soligo last year when he played midfield for the first 8 week and looked good, understandable as he had an interrupted preseason. Pedlar played midfield during his draft year, look at the game against the Saints last year but only had 1 CBA this year when they said he was going to get more midfield minute.

I get where you are coming from but we are robbing our forward line structure to put these players into the midfield when they are better forwards. We need genuine mids.

Can't agree more, Nick's seems to have regressed as his mindset has shifted from developing to contending but with that he has reverted to safe thinking
