How does Paul Chapman slip through?

I'd be wary right there. Anyone who singled out Chapman's game for blame in the Qualifying Final is either very biased, or wasn't paying attention. For one thing he was the sub, yet had 11 disposals, 3 marks and laid 5 tackles. That was in 44% game time. Josh Caddy had 84% game time, yet had 9 touches, 1 mark and 0 tackles. Nathan Vardy had 78% game time, but had 8 touches, 4 marks, 1 goal, 1 tackle and 6 hitouts (and he was meant to be a ruckman). Blicavs, Walker, Lonergan and Varcoe were others that all had underwhelming games to put it mildly.

I agree that's why I think he had a falling out.

You've got to be under 30, and probably under 20 to believe that. The dislike between Hawthorn and Geelong fans goes back a lot further than when Chapman started playing for us. It was there in the late 1980s.

Was there watching from the members pavilion of the MCG when Mark Yeates ran through dermie at the opening bounce of the 1989 gf. Do the maths.

Chappy has been very polite when discussing Geelong in the media since his departure. He deserves credit for this.

The real story (in the eyes of the man himself and his family) is less then rosy.

Glad he with us and there is a definite point to prove to a few people still at Geelong.

Fortunately he is now at a club that puts the welfare of its players first.

This is my point, they should've kept Chapman for at least this year knowing that Menzal wlil never play again and they also knew Motlop was struggling over the summer. Christensen being out long term has compounded their forward line concerns. Geelong are basically reaping the benefit of blooding 10 players last year. They certainly have some good replacements on the rise. My argument is Chapman was the difference between winning and losing a Preliminary final, Chapman plays and the Hawks don't win the flag! You cannot put enough emphasis on experience and Essendon fans are seeing the difference an A list player can make to their team right now. He might still go down long term, but i would rather have him on our side than playing against us. IMO he is already Essendon's most valuable player. I wonder if there was more to this story than has been told? Getting suspended during the finals series didn't help his cause.
Chapman joined Essendon Oct 13th 2013
Summer started Dec 1st 2013
Motlop stuggling is therefore after Chapman has already been let go and joined Essendon so it's nothing more than hindsight.

I reckon your onto something here.
Tell us what you know, I did!
There has been a falling out somewhere.

Word has it ASADA will automatically issue infraction notices if Chapman plays 22 games this season.

Not a problem, he's playing 25.

This whole deal with Chappy has left a bad taste in my mouth. Paul Chapman is not a Club Champion at Geelong. With three Premiership medals and a Norm Smith he is a bona-fidé living Club Legend. Is what the G.F.C did to a player of that standing with the club and with quite a bit left in the tank right? Proper?

I don't think so!

I'd like to know more about the 'less than rosy' side of this story - even if its only to prove my own assumptions right...

have never heard of this 'real story' rumor which is currently circulating around on BF. Tm Watson spread one a couple years ago about the Geelong boys infighting amongst one another and he was eventually called out and admitted to lying for whatever reasons, only he knows. They (Essendon) do have form in that regard so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

I am in close contact with Paula Chapman and the family were devastated with the 'callous' nature of the departure... this dragged on for a number of weeks and then to be "informed" (this was a joke in itself!) only a few hours prior to the Best & Fairest count last season. I'm sure she wouldn't mind me putting that 'out there' on here either.

A club legend deserved better and a lot of bad blood has been splashed in the process (none of it against any current players at Geelong). Chris Scott and a couple of others behind the scenes have a lot to answer for in how this all played out in a fairly brutal fashion.

Crisis has created opportunity though and Paul is loving it at Essendon... to be reunited with Bomber is a bonus. Hope his form continues.

Perhaps he should've re-signed earlier in the season instead of dragging it out.

Me. I asked him. And Macca, apologies if it sounded like I was accusing you of spreading bullshit. I've heard similar things to what Watson had alluded to, of a punch-on (possibly just a verbal joust) between Chappy and Stevie J at training one night. Can't remember if this was under Bomber Thompson or Chris Scott...

At the moment its a win win for both Chappy and Geelong, not sure though how the Cats will be feeling when he nails a couple of last quarter goals against them in the prelim to send them packing ;)

He said in his parting speech at the 2013 club best & fairest something along the lines of "I might hit you cheaply, but know that I still love you.'

I expect that he'll come at us with a love that hurts.
