I was just browsing the Bulldogs board and they had this topic which peaked my interest.

What were the Swans zones back in the zoning days?
And if they were in place today, our team would have looked totally different from what it is today, what type of team would we have?
Would we have won a premiership before 2005?
Does anybody here know what were our zones back then?
Maybe we can come up with our best 22, with our old zones.

I know we had the Albury - Wagga (Riverina area), for a zone in Melbourne we had the South Melbourne / Port Melbourne area and I think a area out towards Noble Park, Springvale way.

Most of the players we had when moved to Sydney came from these areas. We still have a few players from the Riverina on our list.

Sydney's zone was out in the Noble PArk area, Oakleigh etc. Good chance Jared Moore lived in the zone.

Justin Koschitzke, don't know others. Sydney had a very good zone, just could not sign many of the players. There was a good artilce in the papers in the early 90s of players who were 'poached' from Sydney's zone

Very good thread, here is a rough list who would have been on our list.

Adeliade Taylor Walker

Brisbane Brent Staker

Essendon Mark McHack,Bacher Houli

Freo Scott Thornton, Tim Ruffles

Geelong Cam Mooney, Tom Hawkins, Ranga Ediriwickrama

Hawthorn Sam Savage, Beau Dowler, Matt Sukling, Luke Breust(r),Will Sierakowski(r)

Mebourne Michael Newton (r)

North Hamish McIntosh

St Scum Lenny Hayes, Justin Koschitzke, James Gwilt, Stephen Milne (yuk) Blake McGrath (r)

Bulldogs Callan Ward, Dylan Addison, Daniel Cross, Jason Tutt, Patrick Rose (r)

Thats a rather long list of what is for the most part rather average players.

I doubt we would have had Tom Hawkins, as I do believe the Father-Son Rule outweighs the Zoning Rule, if not, it should do.

Did we have Sandringham or Williamstown?

If we had Williamstown, we could have had the likes of Daniel Giansiracusa and Brad Johnson. Someone on the Bulldogs board mentioned that, we had the Williamstown area.

If the zones back then are similar to what the Oakleigh Chargers are now in the TAC Cup, we could have had all the players from that team/area. If so, I'll draw up a list of players that has played for the Oakleigh Chargers later.

Daniel Hannebury - Xavier College
Nick Smith - Scotch College

Those two from the Swans are from the Oakleigh Chargers U18 team.

Would/could have been ours under the zoning, if the zones are the same as the Oakleigh Chargers area.

AFL.com did a series of articles last off-season about this.

Here is the team they had.

SYDNEY SWANS
B: Josh Gibson, Brent Staker, Scott Thornton
HB: Paul Bevan, Craig Bolton, Dean Solomon
C: Kieren Jack, Jarrad McVeigh, Tadhg Kennelly
HF: James Gwilt, Ashley Hansen, Craig Bird
F: Stephen Milne, Cameron Mooney, Adam Schneider
Ruck: Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Lenny Hayes, Mark McVeigh
Inter: Dylan Addison, Henry Playfair, Beau Dowler, Ryan Davis

The Swans draw on South Melbourne’s traditional zone as well as the majority of NSW (apart from a small area zoned to Geelong and North Melbourne.)

South Melbourne had access to players in part of inner-city Melbourne as well as north-east Victoria and a patch around the Oakleigh-Noble Park area. This section might only cover a few suburbs but it would provide the Swans with Scott Thornton, Stephen Milne, Ashley Hansen, James Gwilt and Beau Dowler. The final side is quite impressive and would definitely be a competitive outfit.

Inner-city Melbourne? Wouldn't that include Williamstown? If so, Brad Johnson and Daniel Giansiracusa would have been ours but, the AFL series had them playing for another team. I'm pretty sure, we would have had Williamstown.

The article says we only had part of inner city Melbourne. Looks like Williamstown is Bulldogs territory.

That's interesting, on the Bulldogs board, someone posted that they were sure that South Melbourne had Williamstown.

Ashley Hansen and Scott Thornton went to the same school as Matthew Boyd and Andrew Carrazzo, so Boyd and Carrazzo should be added to us. Boyd is from Mulgrave and Carrazzo from Rowville.

Boyd is listed as coming from Narre Warren though. I thought the zone was where you lived, rather than where you went to school?

Do you have a list of the zoning suburbs and towns that we had, since you're big on our history mate?

That was who he played as a junior. He lives in Mulgrave. As a Private Catholic College it tended to draw in students from a wide area, but this school didn't force the students to play for the School team like other such Private Catholic Colleges such as St Kevins, hence the wide difference between each of the above four players and their local junior clubs. Remember two played for the Stringrays in the TAC Cup and two played for the Chargers and according to the list we got one from each.

Not really. I know that I live in our old zone currently of Mulgrave/Wheelers Hill and that is the Oakleigh to Noble Park zone. Other than that no real clue, because the zones were after my time and I never have had a change to look at a map with the boundries on them.
