Understand that. My point is that there are practical limits to how much train stabling yards can be rationalised into a handful of mega yards when you have a 15 line system with most lines being over 20km long and over half of them 35km or longer, when those lines are set out like spokes on a bicycle wheel and only come together right at or near the city.
They might not be left with much choice. Stabling yards are designed for 6 car trains. We are up to 7 car trains which going off the HCMT take up about 1/2 a car extra space per train.
That might mean the loss of stabling space if they can't extend the siding.

There. In the corner of Dingley Bypass and East Boundary Road. At least there it'll blend in and not stand out like an eyesore.
Plus the surrounds will mitigate and buffer all the noise. Also it's much more stable a ground for the trains.

Now I've been here numerous times and I can tell you that even though the ground is stable enough for pedestrian usage, it cannot tolerate 100s if not 1000s of tons of trains even for maintenance.
The flaw in that site is it's miles from the line. The line from Kingston road will turn to the north not long after Old Dandenong Road. That will need to be a certain radius to keep the speed up. Look at Newport, Cragieburn, Bayswater, Westall and Pakenham East. They're all next to the train line. They've all not on some spur miles away from the track.

That site has been promised for 30 years to be a sports area. If both sides of politics haven't delivered on building it there's fat chance it's happening.

agree with this, but i can see the possible issues.

Firstly the alternate idea is existing market gardens. rezoning that is a tougher fight than reclaimed land

Secondly, as the following states, it needs to be on the train line. how close the alternate area to the tunnel is unclear, and i imagine they are loathe to relocate the tunnel

In your opinion is it OK plonking an eyesore like this in the middle of residential area that was supposed to be slated for a sporting complex?

consultation is still ongoing, and its only a proposed site at this stage

Engaging the community
Suburban Rail Loop Authority is committed to working with local residents and traders during the planning and development of the project and throughout future stages of delivery of Suburban Rail Loop.

Details of Suburban Rail Loop were first communicated to landowners and tenants in the vicinity of the proposed Heatherton stabling site in October 2020 with this project letter.

Properties neighbouring the proposed train stabling site received this letter, together with information about train stabling ahead of the announcement of the preferred stabling site on 16 December 2020.

Online consultation commenced simultaneously and remains open via the link at the bottom of this page.

Have your say
The Stage One alignment, including the proposed train stabling at Heatherton, will be subject to an Environment Effects Statement (EES), our State’s most robust planning and environmental assessment and approval process. Local communities will have a number of opportunities to input into this process.

You can find out more about the process here.

Actively engaging with residents, businesses and other key stakeholders will help to inform project design and measures to minimise potential impacts on the local community, such as screening and landscaping.

You can provide your feedback on the proposed train stabling at Heatherton, directly via the survey below.

We expect to be able to share further design information over coming months, with further opportunities for the community and stakeholders to provide feedback.

Should you have any questions about the project please contact the Suburban Rail Loop information help line at 1800 105 105 or via the Contact page.

The best way to stay up to date with what’s happening on the project and opportunities to be involved is to sign up for project updates here.

Look I understand that's "proposed" at this stage but honestly do you believe that they will listen to people regarding this? Dandemic will have one of his mindless bureaucrats throw it away or ignore it completely.

yes. its a shithole today, and you moved there with it being a shithole

anyone expecting a vague promise to be delivered on as a reason to buy a house is an idiot. remember the train spur to rowville, the redevelopment of the frankston waterfront or the chadstone shopping centre when it was one quarter its current size

Yes, it's perfectly acceptable, because much as you want to believe otherwise you're not better or more special than the millions of Victorians who are impacted by the necessitations of public transport infrastructure.

Your sporting complex hasn't had a single government dollar committed to it in 30 years, so if you think it was being built I have a bridge I could also sell you.

The site was chosen following detailed analyses of several sites - in terms of public and environmental impact, impact on local community and existing zoning, this was the only site they've chosen to take through the EES process. Which should tell you that something is seriously wrong with your proposed alternative. Having worked on a project that went through the laborious, awful EES process a few years back, I'm sure they would've loved to take a back up alternative through that process if a viable one existed.

Even a train line to Doncaster. First proposed in 1890! Planning in 1969.

one thing i like about the anniversary trail is it explains the old history of the original loop line (that connected Camberwell to Oakleigh)

Our road system in Melbourne is A+. Don't give me any of this nonsense about traffic as this will never be solved in any major city....

Our PT system outside of the central 5km of the CBD is extremely poor (possibly with some minor exceptions for the south-east). The system doesn't allow you to efficiently go E-W, most train lines are 20 minute minimums off peak, and then you've got the clusterf*ck of a bus network that gets rooted by poor route choice and traffic.

Whether you like it or not, Melbourne is going to be a massive city over the next 20-50 years, and as occurs with most cities, cars are increasingly being placed on a lower priority. We see this already with the City of Melbourne actively discouraging vehicle transport in the city e.g. less car parks, increased cycle lanes etc.

As silly as this may sound with the metro rail tunnel, level crossing removal and possible circular loop it is only the bare minimum needed for a modern developed city.

But we don’t want it to be any easier for those dirty western suburbs people to travel east and no one wants to go west 😉

Besides Dan and the Greens have already said no one wants to travel from the East to the West, he spent a $billion to not build a road because no one wanted it, but now we have to spent an unknown amount on a rail line that people don’t need?

And shithouse frequencies along with most buses finishing up by 9PM

Tulla already has the station.
People probably laugh at this but there's a kernel of truth here; there is apparently a large cavernous space beneath one of the car parks at the airport, that was put there in 1970 with the intention of an eventual station. I didn't know this until recently!

Whether that gets used with the eventual airport station, who knows.

Could be used to advantage on the political class

It has been long needed as well, Should have been funded and done with the mining boom money back in the late 90s.

So apparently they changed the law today for truck drivers now have to be 0.00 for anything over 4.5 tons, nice of them to make it effective today and not actually tell anyone ahead of time...
What garbage.
I've never driven anything bigger than a 4x4 and ive heard of it from multiple sources over the last few days.
