Hypothetical: Next Collingwood coach? (Think this is disrespectful? OK, OK, we get it)

Is this thread out of line?

  • This is embarrassing, we should all be supporting Buckley.

  • Buckley won't be coach forever, let's have an adult conversation about his replacement

Brad Scott (The North Scott, not the Cats Scott) linked to us tonight by Jay Clark.

Makes some sense too, Walsh knows him and has worked with him, and he was at Collingwood under Malthouse before we went to shit.

I wouldn't rule him out.

Clarkson, Roos and Dew aren't available for several reasons, so Scott may be the next best option.

Coaching candidate #3 - Nathan Bassett

Nathan Bassett was drafted by Melbourne in the first ever rookie draft of 1997.

He was traded to Adelaide at the end of 1998.

He went on to play 210 games and won AA selection in 2006.

He finished second in Adelaide's best and fairest in 2005.

Bassett took over SANFL club Norwood in 2010 and guided them to a 12 win season (3rd) and a narrow 6pt defeat in the grand final.

In 2009 Norwood finished 7th with 7 wins, in 2008 5th with win 9 wins.

In 2011 Norwood would finish 2nd on 14 wins only to be eliminated in the 2nd semi final.

However in seasons 2012 and 13 Norwood would win back to back premierships and finish top of the ladder in both seasons.

They lost a total of 5 games across this period.

Bassett became an assistant coach with Essendon during a troubled period of seasons 2014/15.

He became a Port Adelaide assistant in 2016 and is currently there defensive coach.

At present Port Adelaide have conceded less points than any other side in the AFL this season.

Will also be very interesting to see what that external management company recommends when they finish there audit on our football department at seasons end.
As much as all of us are a bit sentimental, and it was nice watching Buckley celebrate our wins in that 3 game winning stretch with Ed his wife his son. It's time for a radical overhaul of our hole football department.
Buckleys limited success was only in his first 2 years when he still had most of the 2010 premiership squad.
His radical changes to our list have left us bare and without any key positional players .
Signing free agents such as White Greenwood Mayne Wells and Lynch on long term contracts has been a disgrace! And I am sure I have forgotten a few others.
An example is with the Saints at the start of 2011 we were way ahead of them. And with Buckleys rebuild look at them now and look at us! They based there initial rebuild in fixing there spine there bookends also topping up with a few young midfielders. Also if they had to sign an experience player they would put him on a 1 or 2 yr contract. Not on a 3 or 4 yr contract.
It's simple Buckley and his team have to go!

Why do believe Dew isn't available?

I'm aware he is contracted with Sydney until the end of 2018 but if he wants the job I couldn't imagine they'd stand in his way of applying.

Given the year North are having it would be hard to sell Brad Scott as our next coach.

Can't be assed going through the thread, has anyone mentioned Craig Jennings? Done his time o the assistant circuit, currently with the Dees, I played junior footy with him and he was the second best in the league so followed his career, he is a genuine footy brain and decent bloke

I want it to be Ratten, Eddie needs it to be Longmire, Roos, Clarkson or Bomber. If he can't pull a big fish to resurrect his reputation at the Pies i think we will be out the door with his mate Bucks....

Categorically wont be Roos however. The bloke said he plans to spend every year between October and December travelling with his family, and clearly stated that ruled him out of coaching as it was too much time away from the club. He flat out said he wasn't going to be coaching.
Lying is the second language of the AFL I wouldn't rule it out if it's a short term gig to do what was meant to happen with the original handover, but similar to both Longmire & Goodwin, at this stage both seems to be successful

It won't be Sam Mitchell. Roos as Director of Coaching is plausible if we go with a Stewart Dew, Caracalla etc- perhaps even if Bucks stays as coach
Agree with all that except for perhaps even if Bucks stays as coach, this is a non-negiotable

Pretty sure hes been guranteed the swans job once longmire wants to give it up. They did the same with Eade to Roos and Roos to Longmire. Seem to always have a proper succesion plan in place.

Roos doesnt seem enthused with being a full time long term coach and Clarkson is picking out wallpaper for his dingley office that wont be built till 2021.

So we either go with an untried coach (Simon Llyod is my pick from them) or go with a tried/failed second timer.

He's contracted, AFAIK. Doubt the Roos let him walk, especially since this rejig (whatever it is that they're doing) was his idea, at least in part...

The faithful bought Nathan Buckley for six years. They'll buy whatever McGuire sells, even if it's shit.

This sounds like another panic "big name" buy, if true. What is it about (re-)joining the 21st century and conducting a thorough forensic recruiting process that McGuire and Collingwood are so scared of...?

Whilst I am not a huge advocate of Roos as head coach, the upshot is that because he isn't tied to a coaching role this year, he could effectively join the club now and start making preparations for next season. You could even get Buckley on board to help facilitate the handover. It means that Buckley can truly do what's best for the club and you don't have the destabilizing, coach sacking circus.

Personally the non Collingwood candidates only could be wrong, cause what if tapping is the best after an interview process, do we then say sorry mate your an ex so see you later?
Anyone who has spent time at Pies as an assistant or like Tapping is an exception...I'm talking about ex players that were great players ie : Burns,Rocca etc ex players seem to make dreadful coaches at the clubs they played at...that is the point I was making.

Just on B.Scott many coaches are much better at it 2nd time around.

Also of course they are having a bad year after starting a rebuild. Look at how many senior players they lost.

Not sure why people expect all rebuilding team's to remain premiership contenders?

It takes time to turn a list over let it grow cohesion and finally mature together.
Then you look to trade in to finish the missing pieces of the jigsaw puzzle.

The club and Buckley would of been much better coming out and saying we are in full rebuild there will be likely some down years before we look to rise again.

But they didn't, they played it by half they tried to stay finals relevant while also turning over the list leaving us with mediocre finish positions and trading in players as if we were close to a flag.

Realistically we are in our 4th year of the rebuild usually this is about the time you see an upswing in wins (the odd team will even make finals).

The 5th year usually should see a return to finals.

When people point at Bevan as doing it in his first season, they are missing the 3 years of groundwork laid down by McCarthy, he did the hard yards.
Bevan came in made a few tweaks and reaped the rewards.

Buckley likely has laid solid foundations for what ever coach comes in and likely they are going to be the beneficiary of his hard work.
As much as I can be a critic I can also see part of why this will be a hard decision to make for the heads at the club.
There is enough evidence to suggest a few tweaks, a few more player pieces, growth in certain players skills/confidence and it might click.

Certainly this season alone if the players could kick even at 65% accuracy (goal and across the field) we would likely be top 4 and not devoid of confidence.

But I also see a hell of a lot of reasons why he should be moved on.

Please let it be bullshit.

Triple M's Jay Clark believes that we have "significant interest" in Brad Scott for the head coaching role at the pies. If he's at the top of our candidates to take over from Buckley at season's end, I think we're better off re-signing bucks in that situation.

So having stolen North Melbourne's coach (allegedly) to bring Buckley to Collingwood, now we do it again to get rid of him. Neat.
