Whilst I agree with you, we need to be getting decent value back. Not 2nd and 3rd round picks.

It's gotta be 1st rounders or talented young players

Yeah we need to overturn a few 28+ players IMO but no real point doing for list clogging 3rd round picks, unless we think we are opening up space to nab BOTH Lynch and Gaff in free agency in 12 months.

Gonna bring this back with included Duryea compo & Gaff inclusion

I think we will need to use at least 1 1st rounder next year if we don't use one this year due to the 2 1st rounders in 4 years rule that came with future trading.
So we'll keep both 2018 1st for next year and see who's on the market but likely we'll have to use 1 of them. + next is supposedly a superdraft so if thats true these picks will be handy to say the least

Again West Coast will receive better compensation for Gaff in 12 months time, so why would they do that deal ?

In regards to player ages, conditioning and recovery has improved a great deal to the point where players are and will continue to plate longer. Especially players who have no injury history and play on the outside. Often a players peak is 28. We are seeing a lot of players reach 300 games and boomer went past that mark by a long way. I haven't run the numbers but I'd say science has given players a couple of seasons extra. So someone like smith can probably expect to play to 33 with no issues and maybe get to 35 if lucky. Wouldn't be too quick to cast aside some of our older players. They may have longer left in them than you think.

Do you reckon Hartung & 23 for Gaff & 67 would get it done?

West Coast would have to rate Hartung substantially higher than I do for them to consider that deal. Personally I think the eagles would be after a top 10 pick or if a 2nd round pick they'd want a play significantly better than Billy.

Not saying that the hawks should trade either frawley, straton or birchall and I'm a big fan of all 3.
However birchall and straton in that order are more vital to the way the hawks play and set up. This year it is clear that brand can take a KPF and the way footy has evolved 9 times out of 10 there is second or third help defender coming in. Frawley would be easier to replace in the squad and with a couple clubs needing a kpb (bulldogs) I wouldn't be surprised to see his name mentioned in talks.

For me all of these players would be on the table over Smith (Birch reluctantly due to his leadership). However, everyone has a price and if we were offered a deal that both parties couldn't refuse then Smith should be considered as well. What I don’t want to see is another ‘good bloke’ deal where we trade away solid players/leaders for SFA. The realist in me says that they we did them a solid for their service and were happy to get SFA in return, but AFL is big business and Clarko always says you put the club first, so the optimist in me thinks that there may have been more to those deals than we know; maybe we see a couple of surprises especially from the West.

I would think Gaff would net an end of 1st pick as compo if he left next year through FA
Agree, by all accounts Rocky will net the Lions and end of first if he leaves. I can't see Gaff being more valuable to the Eagles than Rocky is to the Lions.

I think we would be better off picking up Gaff next year as a FA. I would suggest this as an alternative.

Our current picks are: 32, 42, 60 and 79. Under your assumption Duryea leaves as a FA we also receive 43.

GWS trade: Puopolo + 42 for Kennedy and 2018 fourth.

West Coast trade: Hartung + 32 for WC round one 2017(I believe pick 13?). I value Hartung as a late second rounder and I believe, in accordance with the draft value index, that this would be enough to get that deal done.

I also suggest that we trade ONE of Stratton, Frawley or Birchall to Collingwood (or another club with similar picks). I know Birch and Stratton offer a great deal of leadership down back and that we don't have many KPD, making Frawley more valuable to us. I believe however, with the current crop of young defenders coming through, that we can afford to trade one of these premiership stars (although I will cry a little inside).

Collingwood trade: Player (Stratton or Frawley or Birchall) + 79 for picks 36, 54.

Freeo trade: pick 54 and 60 for Balic and 58. I believe this is fair value as the kid has hardly played, but does have potential. We also have some good will in the bank with Freeo with respect to Brad Hill.

Suns trade (maybe): pick 36 for Rory Thompson. Not sure on Rory Thompson and at how much he would be valued. We could potentially get him cheaper. But at 200cm and with a bit of Clarkson I think he could provide adequate cover, if we were to say trade Frawley. He is also a few years younger than Frawley, Stratton and Birch.

In summary,
Out: Duryea, Puopolo, Hartung, one of (Stratton, Frawley or Birchall) and picks 32, 42, 79.

In: Kennedy, Balic and picks 13, 36 (or Thompson), 58 + 2018 fourth (GWS)

Edit: also in pick 43

Hartung and a draft pick for Gaff ain't gonna cut it. Some of the trade suggestions in this thread are horribly bad.

Smith will only be traded out if it nets a first round pick in return.

With Hartung likely to be out the door, our outside midfield stocks is the worst in the league. Trading Smith makes zero sense unless the club knows it has a player they have over the line from another club during this years trade period.

If we talking about those who are 25 and over on our list, there's currently four players with extremely high market value. They are;

Rioli (worth a top 5 pick)
Gunston (worth a top 10 pick)
Breust (worth a late first round pick)
Smith (worth a late first round pick)

My trade hypothetical has Smith worth 1st rounder.

Actually think Stratton may be surplus to NEEDS. I would consider that trade nosebeers . Think we need Birch & Frawley however.

Don't like the Thompson deal. Would warrant a late 3rd at best imo
