Yeah we need to overturn a few 28+ players IMO but no real point doing for list clogging 3rd round picks, unless we think we are opening up space to nab BOTH Lynch and Gaff in free agency in 12 months.

Might need to cool our jets till 2018. Deep draft and free agents

Unless there's another Mitchell or omeara why even bother? We have standards and most 'role' level positions are well covered

Maybe not the hole left by brad hill but clubs aren't going to take hartung and give us a better version of him back anyway he is an improver

My trade hypothetical has Smith worth 1st rounder.

Actually think Stratton may be surplus to NEEDS. I would consider that trade nosebeers . Think we need Birch & Frawley however.

Don't like the Thompson deal. Would warrant a late 3rd at best imo

I think Smith is a required player. Yes he is getting older, but he is also a leader of the club (I know it hasn't stopped them in the past). I think we need to retain Smith to cover the outside run and pursue Gaff next year as a FA, whilst allowing the Glass and Morrison types to develop.

Pick 43 for Rory Thompson?

Maybe I wasn't clear. Drafting picks are only worth an opportunity, I don't subscribe to player is worth pick X because that is media oversimplification

Team need impacts, age impacts, salary impacts.

Players decide if they move so that impacts. All I'm saying is if we trade Smith I hope we get good value.

I'd prefer to keep him but I don't pretend to know who stays or goes

I understand its an opportunity and getting value out of draft picks lowers as the picks get lower. So we have no guarantee we're actually going to get value out of the Smith trade. W'ere dealing with a lottery.
Generally the media gets it in the ball park, Treloar deal Adams Deledio Mitchell, O'Mearra, Hill, Hibbered, Prestia etc. then you have some completely out of the bag like Anderson.

I'd also prefer to keep Smith, like you said previously we are void of his type. Something has to give though, we have a log jam of over 28 year olds, some with currency and a lot with with inferior currency, Its the first time in 13 years our list is in this predicament, so it will be interesting what path we take.......

i'd prefer to be getting a known quantity back as part of any deal were it to eventuate, either by on trading picks or directly as part of any deal
and that player better be in an area of need

Personally if I was in charge I wouldn't do that. But I'd back whatever Wright & Clarko does as they've proven themselves that they know what they're doing.

Well if we were able to acquire Rory Thompson for pick 43, I'd be okay with parting with both Frawley and Stratton if it meant getting a first round pick this year or next year - keeping Birch and Burgoyne down back for leadership in the backline. This would give us considerable coverage if say Brand was to become injured.

Referring back to my previous hypothetical:

Out: Duryea, Puopolo, Hartung, one of (Stratton, Frawley or Birchall) and picks 32, 42, 79.

In: Kennedy, Balic, Rory Thompson and picks 13, 36, 58 + 2018 fourth (GWS)

So Frawley or Stratton I'd estimate due to age and skill, to be worth a mid to late second round pick. Let's say pick 30.

So we trade Player (Frawley or Stratton) + pick 36 for between pick 16 to 12 this year OR for a 2018 first rounder. I think this year seems more probably however, due to teams possibly valuing next years draft more than this years.

This means we would receive: Kennedy, Balic, Thompson and two first round picks (one possibly a 2018 first), pick 58 + 2018 fourth.

The only players of note that I'd be prepared to trade are Stratton, Shiels and Breust.

The rest are either too important or have enough good footy left in them with the exception of Birchall who is required for backline leadership purposes.

I don't consider the likes of Hartung, Puopolo, Shoenmakers, Langford, Duryea, Vickery, Henderson and Whitecross to be of note and therefore happy to part with any of them also either through trade or FA where applicable.

It's not actually "Joel" is it?
I was just going off the Todd Garner thread on our board
It says Joel will be a top draft pick this year
Todd is in our academy zone for drafting next year

The great West Indian fast bowler Joel Garner likes this!

I love the fact so many trading rules are ignored in here. The club can not simply trade a contracted player. The player must agree to the trade first. So the first question is, will (insert contracted player's name here) be willing to be traded to another club?

Guarantee Breust will not......from his mouth. So unless he lied to me, stop speculating here.

I would imagine it most circumstances players would prefer to be at a club that wants them there - pretty disheartening to get told your name is on the trade table.

EDIT: I know he said no last year but I believe they weren't overly serious discussions

We don't have trade just for the sake of trading either

Do you reckon Hartung & 23 for Gaff & 67 would get it done?
Hartung & something close to the compo they would get next year (19+) should get it done.

If not we pass on the trade this year. Aim to land him as a FA.

If Hartung accepts WC offer then we should push for a pick upgrade this year and a 2018 2nd.

Say pick 30 & 2nd (2018) for 42 & Hartung.

If next year's draft is apparently going to be a superdraft - and we failed to make the finals this year so are no guarantee of making them next year - I wonder if Hartung + 2018 second round pick would do the job as opposed to this years?

Michael Talia isn't being offered a new contract at Sydney. Tall defender back up option, 24 - if we were going to use a speculative delisted free agent spot, this is it.
There is a reason why he's been given the chop from 2 clubs now.....
He's shit!

What's the obsession by some of trading Smith ?
We need pace
So we trade away pace????
Also Frawley
Have people forgotten so soon ?

This one has me really baffled. Frawley is almost the only player on our list that we can't replace. A massive, incredibly strong KPD with a great turn of speed.

Forgetting his current worth to the side the ultimate trade scenario for mine is if we trade Frawley for a 1st round draft pick or equivalent gun under 23yrs. Considering our lack of draft picks over our premiership years to obtain a free agent, fill a hole in a premiership side and turn it into another premiership player would be the ultimate in list management
