If hickey is worth pick 13 then we did very well to get Witts through the NSW scholarship and certainly would have gone in the top ten if not top 5,Hickey is also a year older and has a lower ceiling than Witts.

Wouldn't everyone have a lower ceiling than Witts.:p;)

However, Hickey has already played senior footy whilst Witts is still unproven at AFL level. I am not going to get too excited till Witts has played AFL successfully. Until then he is an unproven talent.

So glad we didn't offer up one of our early picks for Hickey...although if rumours are true that we put pick 18 on the table then obviously shows Hine is not rating this draft.

Hickey shows promise...but I just think our future is Witts and Ceglar. If we want a ruckman now, it should be an established backup to Jolly like Stephenson or McIntosh when he was available....or just keep Wood.

We already have 2 project rucks on the list.

And I'm very surprised the Saints gave up so much for Hickey. I know they get a few draft picks back in return...but it was a huge price to play.

I wonder if they would've been better just keeping their pick 12 and 13 and going into the draft really strong. That said, they seem to have addressed every area of concern.

Pick 14 (at the time)

The sad truth is that to get big men you need to pay up. Whether they turn out to be any good is in the lap of the Gods.

Agree with this. Wood showed lots of potential...and it is tough to assess because he was behind a lot of ruckmen at Brisbane as well so we only saw glimpses of him which looked promising. His tap work even to date is very good at times...his problem is maintaining intensity throughout a game. It has never developed to AFL level.

But ruckmen are always a gamble because they take so long to develop and put beef on. Wood just didn't work out...but I think was worth the investment at the time. I'm not critical of the club for this decision.

I would have spewed if we coughed up pick 21 for another young ruckman. Hickey has played, what 2...?? AFL games. Hardly proved himself at all.

In the voice of John Lennon:
All we are saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnng...
is give Witts a chance!

When Wood was up here at the Lions they still had McDonald and Charman and He was behind both but as soon as it became obvious that McDonald was not coming back there were quite a few Lions fans who regretted letting Wood go.Wood really should have able to make the grade as he had all the attributes necessary to make it and yes I agree that on what I saw of Wood when at the Lions he looked a very good prospect but he has never come on unfortunately.

im just doing the research now.

i will have a definitive answer very soon.

Jolly was a proven gun ruckman and we knew what we were getting with leroy plus we paid peanuts for him...neither of these were gambles.

Sydney paid up to get Jolly in the first place
Sydney paid up to get Mumford
Geelong paid overs for Ottens

Theres a million examples of teams taking risks on up and coming ruckmen. You win some you lose some, but you will always lose if you dont have any good ruckmen so you have to keep plugging away until you get it right. Collingwood was desperate in 2007 and went hard for Wood. Luckily they went back to the well in 2008 and 2009.

Yeah I see where you're coming from but my point is I'm glad we didn't put up another 1st rounder for an unproven big man. We took our risk and it failed, Jolly and Mumford were obviously big wins for Sydney but they had more games under their belt than the likes of Hickey; and Mumford was traded for a second rounder I think, and still had more games than Wood had played when we traded for him.

We already have enough unproven big men. We have invested in Witts and Ceglar (who by the way cost us a first round pick) I dont begrudge StKilda for paying up because thats what teams have to do if they are deficient in ruck. And I dont begrudge us paying up for Wood. Better to try and fail than to not try.

That was my point....I think we're agreeing and confusing each other at the same time lol:thumbsu:

Paid overs for Ottens? You're having a laugh pal. :p You obviously weren't at the g for the 07 prelim when he kept us in the game as a few others got stage fright. In the end he was the difference between collingwod or Geelong winning the flag that year. Put simply Geelong wouldn't have their last 3 flags if it wasn't for the big fella, and you boys may well have a couple more. Time to do some homework.

Have to agree with this I too was at the 07 Prelim and ottens was the only difference destroying both Guy Richards and Chris Bryan that night. Still have nightmares about Ottens game that night as it cost us the flag in 07.
