Would we be compensated, even though he is out of contract?
And if so, what do you think would be a fair deal?

I would prefer to keep him at all costs, but until he signs a new contract the rumors are going to circulate.

well if we lose Gazza all we seem to be getting is one pick after our first round pick which if we finish top four will be in the 20's...

If thats all we are getting for the best player in the game, good luck getting much more than that for a future star...

The AFL has fu**ed us all here..

Yep, good on em for trying to expand the game but hurting the traditional clubs and their fans is not the right way to go about it.

I got a feeling the AFL by that i mean individual clubs, will lose a lot of fans over this.

I really don't think the AFL have thought this through. The compensation seems to be about in-line with letting go a cusp player. Surprise surprise, GC go after the best players in the comp and the only compensation clubs can get is potentially a late first or second rounder.

Staggering.

Surely GC should have to part with some of their plethora of early picks to get players like Ablett, Hurley and Cotchin. They are literally their clubs most important players going forward and they can just pinch them.

If true that's an absolute joke! He's worth more than Judd was!

Bring back the good old days, Delaney, Ridley and Kickett for Lloyd.

Are you sure this is correct? Source?

If the value of the player depends on the finishing position of that club that season, all players are suddenly valued at the same price then? That simply can not be the case surely??!!

I swear the AFL said they would have a value-based system, which has been kept a secret in order to value a players worth.

What is suggested here is that all players will be valued irrelevantly, but the finishing position of that team suddenly values the player?

Makes zero sense, and IMO there will be a $h!t fight and a half if this is the case.

He was picked at 5 two years ago, and has well and truly exceeded expectations here. In a trade he'd be worth pick 1 + something.

In other words, the AFL can go and get ****ed.

It does not matter how much you dislike your club if Essendon got handed pick 30 for Hurley then something is not right with the signing of un-contracted player. You would think one of the GC 1st 5 picks is close to even as you will get. But even then this is short of the correct value of the player.

If Hurley wanted to go to the GC it would be good if he signed a 1 year contact with Essendon - Essendon then can negotiate a "fair" trade - ie picks 2 and 4 for Hurley. This way Hurley does the right thing by the club, the club gets resaonable compensation and Hurley get to where he wants to go - win win win.

Are you guys just getting onto this now. Ive been all over it for months with Ablett.
We are all gonna get ripped off bad by the AFL and GC if our stars go.
Sure we can handle fair compensation but we will get close to nothing for the best players in the game.
Even the crappy picks we get wont be coming from the GC they are extra picks made up by the AFL for the draft that we have a 5 year window to use them and we have to nominate before the start of the year when we want to use it.

Its gonna get ugly and GC will be more hated than the Pies when they take our best players for nothing.

The fact that even Kings Army agrees with an Essendon fan is proof that we're right.

I don't think it's fair for the GC to target young developing sides. Go after players from teams in the top 4, not teams who are struggling to make finals. I'd be upset if we lost Hurley, even more so if we got nothing for him! Players under the age of 20 or 21 should be off limits.

So will I ..
But, i do honestly think he is happy at Essendon.
It's most probably bullshit sensationalised journalisim, typical of the HUN, although until he signs a contract i will be worried!

In these days, that doesn't mean much.

Unfortunately money talks.

What the hell have you been smoking? When the AFL convenes to determine the compensation for a player of Ablett's worth they will take into account what he has achieved in the game such as BnF finishes, brownlow finishes and so forth.

From there they will probably determine that Ablett is worth at least two first round draft picks and probably a second round pick as well, these picks must then be used in any draft within 5 years of the Gold Coast entering the competition. Where you got that you will only receive a pick in the 20's as compensation is anyones guess!

As for Hurley id say a first round pick and maybe third round pick would be fair because unfortunately to this point in his career he hasnt done all that much. Though he will be an outstanding player in the future.

IT would mean we have not gotten much out of 3 of the last 4 first round draft picks, Gumbo, Myers, Hurley....
These picks are supposed to be the future of our club....
No compensation will be good enough for hurley....
Pretty stuffed really.

we will be able to offer hurley just as much as the Gold coast if GAJ goes. if he doesnt i guess it will be hard to match the $ so as long as he is happy here, and we continue to improve why would he leave? all players want to win a flag before money and i dont care how many concessions the Goldie has we are 4-6years closer to finishing top 4 to them!

i dont think anyone actually knows what the AFLs equation is for deciding what compensation is, except that you can use it any time in the next 5 years,

surely if a player like GAJ goes geelong should get pick 1 (which would be pick 4 next draft or pick 1 in 4years when GWS or goldie arent getting their priorities)

I will stop watching football, the one time we potentially have an elite KPP he get's stolen from the GC? I would just stop watching.
