Injury Injuries 2023

With our defence now completely decimated by injury, it feels pretty bad that we won a bunch of games in the first half of the season. Our season is pretty close to cooked if we don’t get some luck going our way, and we could’ve had an even better draft pick along with more pressure on the coaching staff if we got less wins this year.

In 'some' positive news, Darcy, Bedendo & Garcia are all listed as tests for the following week. Unfortunately Richards is tracking to the longer term bracket of his injury.

Sam Darcy (jaw) – Test
Riley Garcia (groin) – Test
Dom Bedendo (groin) – Test
Ed Richards (hamstring) – 3-4 weeks
Harvey Gallagher (finger) – 3-4 weeks
Jason Johannisen (hamstring) – 4-5 weeks
Toby McLean (lower back) - 4-6 weeks
Tim O’Brien (hamstring) – 8-9 weeks
Liam Jones (forearm) - 8-10 weeks
Hayden Crozier (hamstring) – 8-10 weeks
Roarke Smith (foot) – Indefinite
Apart from the boys listed as Test, they’re almost all defenders/dual role players on the injury list (McLean the lone exception). Any side can handle a player or two in different areas of the ground, but we are now missing 3 of our best defenders along with most of our depth

I honestly think we have no choice but to play Naughton back now. If it was only a month for Jones then we could make do with spare parts.

10 weeks requires a significant investment in the backline. If we roll with our current crop of key defenders in their current form with injuries to JJ & Richards (and depth options in O'Brien & Crozier), finals will slip away very quickly.
In order to go deep in September you need to have a settled coherent back 6 with 2 rotations through there.

The bye provides the opportunity for a re think of what that back 6 looks like and whether Keath and Naughton with Gards and Bruce as the backup or leave Naughton out of the mix altogether as it will take him a good month to get the feel of not only playing back but working with the other defenders.

JOD can play the TOB role if we need a third tall down there.

We should also get Buku back into the backline in the VFL immediately to see if he could be another option

Jones injured really hurts. Really tough from here.

Roark Smith really can’t take a trick. I think he could’ve really helped us with his defensive running on the wing.

I'm fully on board with Naughton to defence for the next 10 weeks. This doesn't mean he's a forward long term but it kills two birds with one stone in a sense. It gives us an 'excuse' to play Naughton in defence to see how the defence and forward lines both work with these changes. It also provides an opportunity for Bruce or Buku to come in as key forwards and give Lobb more responsibility in attack.

If it doesn't work, it doesn't work but at least the bye gives us an extra week to settle with our structure until Richards & JJ are back.

And the backline was already out line with the least depth. Going to be a real challenge

Look forward to next year now. Finals done. Tank now for better draft pick.
stay positive dogman 1, we're not flying but look at the Table..played the extra but just one game from top 4....either or both Melb/Bris might lose this week giving us a real sniff....if the coaches can put in a lot of work over the next week and strategise tightening a couple of areas, yes with less available players, who knows

10 weeks Jones!
Butler Bulldogs No GIF by Butler University

What amazes me though is that every hammy we’ve had have been long term. No standard 3 weekers.
Treloar came back surprisingly quickly but otherwise your point stands .
