On the channel 10 news they lauded their # 1 pick Walsh.
Suppose they have nothing else to look forward too this season.
As per after a lengthy spell they actually mentioned a piece on the side they were playing...funny that!
I'm guessing if Quatermain wasn't the sports presenter we would of hardly got a mention at all.o_O

Third Quarter
Hawthorn - 11.4 - 70
Carlton - 4.2 - 26

Goals: Moore 2, Puopolo 2, Nash 2, Henderson, Worpel, Sicily, Breust, Smith

Michington, Mirra and Lewis all out there now.

Cuz has a really nice contested ball get, love his strength.

Another turnover to Carlton inside their defensive 50, mopped up by Morrison who unselfishly centres to Smith 10m from goal. Set shot sails through the middle!

Carlton dive on the ball in the goal square and are called holding the ball. Breust slots in his first.

Cousins has been huge to start the third quarter. Has had two center clearances, with the second finding Puopolo inside 50. Poppy gets his second.

Also looks like Jaeger is done for today, managing his load.

Carlton fail the switch again in the middle of the ground, and it’s picked off by Izzy who kicks to Conor Nash who takes the mark who then strolls to the square and goals.

Have absolutely loved James Worpels intent on the footy today. Nothing new but I think he will take it to a new level this season.

Impey takes a fantastic intercept mark just before the 3/4 time siren. Looking very good.

Kept them scoreless that quarter. Carlton turned it over numerously!

Fourth Quarter
Hawthorn - 12.5 - 77
Carlton - 8.5 - 53

Goals: Moore 2, Puopolo 2, Nash 2, Breust 2, Henderson, Worpel, Sicily, Smith

Reeves on now wearing Pittos number 27!

Kaiden has looked a lot more composed and confident in himself today. I think he has the body and athleticism to play consistent footy if he can back himself in more.

Three unanswered goals to the blues at the 16 minute mark of the 4th. We are looking a bit tired.

Sicily clears 55-60m from the kick in, with Nash collecting and running with the footy for 40m, handballing over to Rough who then handballs to Breust for the goal. Very selfless footy!

The absentees from today were: Mitchell, Burgoyne, Birchall, Howe, Gunston, Wingard, Scully, O’Brien, Schoenmakers, Pittonet, Walker, Kosi, Scrimshaw, Ross, Miles, Jiath, Mohr, Hanrahan, Greaves and Golds

My thoughts on what I saw today

Jaeger is a freak, I think our midfield will hold up okay against teams with average tap rucks as Jaeger, Worpel and other mids are clearance machines. Might struggle when our rucks are being beaten though (Melbourne, Collingwood etc.)

Moore looks very promising, just a natural footballer who reads the game well and runs all day.

Sicily’s kicking is seriously one of the best I’ve ever seen. Must get the ball in his hands as much as possible this year to set us up. He can get it 80m clear of the goals from a kick out easily now with the ability to play on from the goalsquare. Also don’t be suprised to see him kick 15 goals from handpasses outside 50 as he showed us last year (think Adelaide game).

Impressed by Worpel’s ability to get forward and kick goals, a goal per game from him would be huge from a 2nd year mid. He is also a complete bull, watched him push a Carlton player onto his ass woth zero effort behind play lol.

Morrison is just so clean, always picks the best option. This was demonstrated in the 3rd when he could have run around and snapped at goal but instead delivered a perfect low pass to Bruest (I think).

Cousins just might make it, had some nice centre clearances when he was given a chance at the bounces. One in particular in the 3rd where he shrugged off a few tackles, handballed it, got it back and then delivered a neat pass to Poppy inside 50 that ended up a goal. Kicking looked good.

For those of you hoping Roughy is going to improve without the captaincy, don’t get your hopes up. From what I saw today, he will be lucky to be best 22 by seasons end :( Multiple times he could have hit Mitch Lewis open in the goalsquare but chose to kick to someone who was virtually in the same position as himself. Almost seemed like he didn’t want to kick it to Lewis...

Ned Reeves is a LONG way off, will take some special coaching to get him up to standard. Also we must have signed him, I’m pretty sure the AFL do not allow unsigned players to play in practice matches. Not sure why the club hasn’t announced it.

Minchington wasn’t too great today either, was fumbly and went missing often.

Was dissappointed that Lewis didn’t get much game time today, he dropped a sitter at CHB which wasn’t great. He is suprisingly good at ground level though, not that it helps our situation much haha!

Harry Jones went alright but still probably needs a few more games as a mid in the VFL before he debuts.

Nash excites me, he isn’t going to be the tall forward we are hoping for but that doesn’t mean he is no use. He burns off opponents so quickly and his tackling pressure is great. Kicked a goal or two today and set up another with a great run down the ground inside 50 with about 3 bounces. Both he and Glass seem to be getting more comfortable with the game.

FWIW Sam Walsh also looks like he will be a star, very clean and confident for a first gamer. The Carlflog supporters are going to overrate him for his whole career though, they’re already clinging to him as their saviour.

Was great to finally see some of the boys play as I missed the intraclub. Would’ve loved to have seen a few more of the boys (Scrimshaw, Walker, Golds, Wingard etc.) Can’t wait to see Wingard play for us, he was also in the coaches box today.
