Is it NRL or rugby union for footy fans

I don't know you, but obviously it is a generalisation. There are idiots in AFL crowds too, just not as many of them. Take a trip down to the graveyard and see the Storm play and you'll see what I mean. Most of what goes in and comes out is absolute scum.

I've come to ignore most things you say about Rugby League. Obviously you've got some sort of grudge against the sport (and in all likelihood have never been to a Storm match let alone a League match), but are happy to judge the sport none the less.

Get back on the extremely high horse, fishmonger.

I just love how the thugby trolls come on here and get the shit kicked out of them every time:p

I enjoy supporting the country in union, but thats as far as it goes for that sport.

I enjoy watching league, but it is too one dimensional and predictable for me, i like to see kicking and marking personally, rather then throwing which, lets be honest, nearly anybody can do.

LOL
Sorry, you start a thread comparing the two, then people start having a go at rugby league, then league fans come and defend their sport, and we are the trolls?
Pfffft

Exactly

Try posting a headline like "only 6k at roosters titans game "
and you'll be banned for life , even though you haven't misquoted ,
abused or ridiculed anybody .

YOU CAN"T HANDLE THE TRUTH

An established fact !

There's a large thread on the topic at League Unlimited.

I don't have anything against league, I like the sport and used to follow it passionately, I just prefer AR and Union these days (mainly because these are the games I most played as a junior in Queensland). And don't judge me either. I have been to many league matches, but at each one it is the sorts of people in the crowd dissapoints me. That's why I'd prefer to watch in on the tellie.

No I haven't been to any in Sydney, and yes the matches I have been to were in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Melbourne but I'm sure the champagne set in Sydney are as civilised as Russell Crowe. ;)

From what I have seen, AFL crowds are far and away more civilised and represents a greater cross-section of society. It may be different in Sydney, but despite what many Sydneysiders think, Sydney does not speak for the rest of Australia.

From my walkabouts I would say footy fans are more taken by rugby union over NRL.
I don't know too many footy fans who can hack NRL.

Not me.

I reckon Rugby League is okay to watch, not the most thrilling game, but not bad.

Rugby Union is probably a good school sport, but it's a ridiculous spectator sport. I feel sorry for the people of South Africa and New Zealand who know no other way and spend their entire lives watching that rubbish.

The object of both games is roughly the same, but I think the "6 tackles" rule underpinning League is fairer, or more pure than the tactics which dominate Union. Most Union teams try to pin their opponents back in their defensive territory with long kicks into touch. It's rubbish. And the endless phase play and rolling mauls are incredibly boring. You spend the entire 80 minutes waiting for one side to start throwing the ball out wide to their backs, but it hardly ever happens. Maybe a total of 30 or 40 seconds worth in the entire game.

The best way to penetrate the defensive line in Rugby League is to be adventurous and throw the ball around. You only have six tackles to score, so after a couple of hit-ups, you better try something, or you won't go anywhere. Far better to watch.

There are more one on one contests in League. It's more entertaining to watch as an attacker attempts to jink his way through the defence. Union seems to be more about sticking together with your mates and not getting isolated when tackled. In Union you have to release the ball when tackled (this creates more chance of a turnover) whereas in League, you're allowed to keep possession for your remaining "set of six".

A good game of Union is okay, but these are rare.
An average of League is better than than an average game of Union.

AFL is far better than both, of course. No comparison. ;)

Fair post Chewy.

Having grown up in true RL territory (southern Sydney), I've never really appreciated Union. What I expect from a good game of footy is rarely on offer in Union. There were a couple of sensational games at the 03 World Cup, but they were way too rare.

Union is a sport where adventure and creativity are rarely rewarded. Strict discipline is over rewarded. It's an ugly dogfight which has never been my preference.

What about the S14 semi on the weekend? 27-12 and not one try scored. Please.

League > AFL > Union for mine.

When I was living in NSW a few years ago I saw the odd game of league on TV and managed to watch half a game here or there but never became a fan. Never managed to watch a Union Game for more than a few minutes before becoming bored and flipping it over. Do we get League here on Victorian FTA, just wondering if they are pushing the exposure? Excepting Storm whom I'd guess they show around midnight some time as I havent noticed them as the last League I remember was their State of Origin they played here.

Your opinions about League and Union are very accurate:thumbsu:

Rugby League for me, fast ,non stop and some brilliant and tough players. Imagine Sonny Bill, Inglis and Asatasi or Karmichael Hunt running around for your footy team.
Union is great too, but can be buggered up by over zealous umpiring.

Aussie rules is best though.

That sums up my feelings .
If RU got rid of the kicking from behind the 22m line then the attacking team
would be rewarded and you'd have less of "aerial ping pong" .
.

I like NRL better but I know the rules of rugby union better for some reason.
I like NRL but I don't like how specialised some of the positions are.

Do you know what you are talking about???????????

League positions are no longer specialised. Take for example the Bulldogs 5/8 playing second row this weekend. This would never happen a few years ago.

This is how I see it. League, more simple, repetitive, less confusing, more free flowing, less polite (f*** off ref)

Union, more physical, slower, tougher, more polite (yes sir) stronger, less scoring, more of a slog. Doesn't help when a lot of union matches are played in NZ where it seems to be raining 24/7.

Don't mind either. I don't really have a side I follow (I hope Australian sides do well in the super-14s and the storm do well but it's not life and death) but I still like watching it and Wallaby matches are a must to watch.

League is less polite, huh? Yeah they always tell the ref to f*** o**. You people have no idea what you are talking about.

If any code tells the ref to f off it would be the undisciplined game of Aussie Rules.

You're a funny boy aren't you. If you did some research you would realise that these stats are in fact WRONG. Most of these teams have been playing each other since the war, you clown.

Mock origin all you like, it will be the biggest story next week.

Who are the Australian Aussie Rules (there's a name) playing this year? Ireland, Next year? Ireland. And then? Ireland. What about touring to ? Let me guess. Ireland????

Now tell me what gets the bigger crowds out of IR and international NRL.

The final the of Tri Nations last year pumped in a fat 20,000 into Aussie Stadium.

The world cup next year will be funny.
