So?

There has been so much underplaying of Butters ability on this thread because some just hate Port & can't let their biases get in the way.

You go to the footy to watch the likes of Rankine & Butters in full flight as they are both special players.

Always rated Butters ahead of Rozee because he doesn't usually go missing when the heat is on.
nah - if I am going to the footy to watch a particular player, it will be Rankine rather than Butters. If you are going to watch a player you are going to watch a highlight reel - would you rather go to the footy to watch Modra or Ben Hart?

Agree he is better than Rozee, but Butters is also a bit soft under real opposition. He can't change momentum.

Especially Finals.

Having said that, he is a very good player. And yes is good to watch when he can easily play at his best.

Most under rated player at Port is Drew. Regardless of opposition he is consistent.

Agree he’s a bit of a flat tracker.

JHF is the only one you look at and wish he played for us. Robbie Gray before that. Outside of that their best players have been pretty stock standard.

I don’t really get the idea of Butters not being damaging, either

He’s pretty top-tier in that regard, at his best
In Finals he isn't.

Some nice raw disposal stats for 2023 Finals, but when drill down his contested v uncontested stat is pretty poor for a mid. As is his CBA v clearance stat.

A non entity in 2024.

Too young in 2020/21 to be critical.

But yes, when allowed to play loose unchecked Footy does damage the opposition.

Which is "Port Adelaide Football" in a nutshell.

Boak has been pretty good I respect him.

Ben Hart in the 1998 grand final was one of the best performances of all time!

It's like some on here don't even think Butters has X factor. Do you watch football?

You think Butters is soft?

Clearly you have no idea, as he has often played under duress.

The Port hate clouds the mind of many here.

Drew is handy, Butters is a gun!

Don't think he is necessarily soft. He never shirks a contest and always puts body on the line. He deserves the courageous player awards he gets.

But his Finals performances, tough contested games, are poor compared to the easier games.

Not Port bias at all. I am sure people here are sick of me defending JHF.

You may want to edit your post as you called him soft. ;)

Port in general have underperformed in finals... & don't we love it, but its hardly been Butters who is the prime problem. Their captain on the other hand...

He was injured in 2024 wasn’t he? Bit harsh.

Butters is a gun.

Rankine is yet to play finals, yet to consistently get tagged and when he was tagged he was shut down.

Both are gun players. It’s pretty simple.

Surely people are taking the piss suggesting Rankine is ahead of Butters by pointing to finals. Rankine has never played a final.

At this stage in their career it's not even close, Butters is a coaches award winner, Rankine obviously incredibly good but has never really put together a full season yet.
I agree, need to wait for Rankine to play a Final to see where he sits.

Butters, brilliant Home and Away player. Struggles to make the same impact in Finals.

Hopefully Rankine not the same.

At least from an u18 perspective, Rankine does like Finals.

5 goals and 17 disposals.

Noting that in the 1st qtr of that game, he had kicked 3 and 7 disposals, where SA blew Vic away and won by 10+ goals.

Are you just choosing to ignore Butters 2023 finals series? 25 against the Giants, 29 against Lions.

Last year he was clearly injured, stop repeating the same rubbish.

Nice raw stats. But drill down.

His CBA to clearance stat was not that great.
Uncontested to contested ratio very poor for a mid. Especially in Finals
DE% and turnover not that good either for so much uncontested ball.

These stats certainly not worthy of being among the best players in the comp.

Yes 2024 he was injured.

But the facts are, Zac Butters is yet to show he is a top 10 player in the AFL in Finals.

In the context of Butters v Rankine, Rankine could be the same. If so, deserves the criticism.

I'm always taking a player who is more damaging per disposal. As it's easy to rack the numbers up, it's not easy to become more damaging.
This has to be one of the more pervasive incorrect opinions on this board. It's not true that someone is going to get 30+ touches so you just need to use the ball well, as though the ball is randomly distributed among all midfielders or something. Winning the ball is an essential part of football. Butters is very good at doing that, Rankine (so far) less so.

He was voted the best player in the AFL in 2023 & had a great finals series.

If he was available to come to the Crows next year, we would take him in a heartbeat!

There are too many on this board who unnecessarily talk down Port players.

Butters is a gun in any measure.

I'm taking the player most likely to influence the game.

Reckon someone who has been the best player in the AFL would be the best choice.

You mean the Finals that Port Power both lose??? Gulden has a similar frame to Butters but a few years younger and look at his contested possession in Finals, that's why his reputation went up a level. Interesting, Butters best contested possession in Finals was against the Hawks which they won.

Do you drill down to that level for Crows players when we played finals?

So you’ll stop raising his 2024 finals given he was injured?
