I'm gunna be a Gunner fan!

But, can someone explain this: I regularly see him in defence. He just bobs up there, not just in defence, but cleaning up deep in defence, sometimes in the goal square.

What's the strategy here?
Is he just helping out, or is it planned that he goes there?

.

He actually plays a fair bit on the wing and does it pretty effectively

Gunston has played 70 games and kicked 141 goals. Already averaging just over 2 goals per game in his career and he's still only 22.

Season stats: 17 disposals, 7 marks, 2 tackles, 2.58 goals per game.

If he can fill out a bit more over the next few years, I reckon he will become our number one key forward.

And yet his aa spot will be given to a midfielder...he would be in any team you could pick on this years form.

This is why the All-Australian selectors are stupid. Placing a midfielder there instead of a player who actually plays in the position. I can't think of a better half forward in the competition this year then Gunston.

Would go as far as saying that he has one very valuable attribute that Buddy Franklin does not have/probably will not ever have..

That is the ability to focus on timing his run perfectly to arrive at the contest right on the button, rather than getting into a wrestling/ pushing/shoving contest and giving away free kicks like the Budweiser used to.

Being lightly built may play a small part in him taking this approach but tend to think that this is part of his natural game. You can't train that skill into anybody; you either have it or you don't.

Was just looking at Gunston's year to year stats and something that is really apparent to me is the steady progress that he seems to be making with each passing year. You look at just about every single one of his stats and you can chart improvement in all of them with each additional year he spends in the system. It makes you wonder how long he can sustain this constant improvement. He is already a very good B-grader but you would think that by this time next year he will be an A-grader and could potentially be on track to become an elite (top 10 in the league) player.

B-grader???? For his role he is as good as there is in the comp. Absolutely elite. Kicked 58 goals this year.

Going by the stats on Normie, would it be reasonable to expect, with his gradual rise, 65 goals and 30 behinds to go with 330+ possessions for 2015?

Well on track for 200 goals.

Should be at lease one game where he does a 20 & 3 job.

Jack Gunston is such a barometer to our forward line. Capable of playing as a half forward flanker, center half forward, full forward and he's even seen across the half back at times helping out the defense.

If history is any guide I reckon Gunston could possibly achieve that goal tally. There's a good chance he may even be our leading goal kicker in 2015.

Would rather him not be Hawthorn's leading goal kicker as that may push his future expectations too high to the point that we expect that standard to be replicated.

Wouldn't be against Punky to be your leading goal kicker next year.

Have Dallas play a couple of games so he knows what may be expected of him whenever that is.

FWIW, Normie with 65, Rough with 68 and Punky with 74.

Dallas, 4 games 2 goals would be a good start.

There's no way that Breust will kick 74 goals, that's not to say it won't happen, but I think he's set for more time in the midfield for 2015, especially now if Rioli can stay fit, it would then allow us to have Breust in the midfield more often.

He's a big game player.
He averages 3 goals in finals - pretty good considering he started playing finals with us as a 20 year-old.

We've played 3 Grand Finals in the 3 years he's been with us.

That can't be a mere coincidence!

Gun. And to think he also doubled his 1%ters this year, wow.

The significant improvement in both Gunston & Breust can, in part, be attributed to the bit part role Buddy played in 2013 & his total absence in 2014.

We have a far more even & balanced spread now so far as forward options are concerned....Our so called 'Hawk-Fork' functions far better than the Buddy-Centric system which it has superseded....As the swans are now finding out for themselves!

Hawk-Fork= 2 Premierships, Buddy-Centricism= 0 Flags

He's put up some impressive numbers this year too.

Round 4 vs Gold Coast: 25 disposals, 10 marks, 5 goals (3 Brownlow votes)
Round 7 vs St Kilda: 24 disposals, 8 marks, 4 goals
Round 16 vs North: 21 disposals, 7 marks, 6 goals (2 Brownlow votes)
Round 17 vs Adelaide: 17 disposals, 5 marks, 4 goals
Round 23 vs Collingwood: 23 disposals, 9 marks, 5 goals (1 Brownlow vote)

Personally, I think if you just evaluate Gunners as a forward with a job to kick goals, then
you are severely under-rating him. Watch the GF replay closely. Watch where each one of his possessions takes place.
He pops up in the backline or on the wing a lot. That's Clarko's game plan, and Gunners is the master of it.

My opinion.

You're not wrong. I have the feeling that Gunston is Doing what Matthew Richardson did in his last 2 years - but doing it from HF & hitting the scoreboard a lot more often.

Gunners is a smart player, a gut runner & a great mark. And, he goes about it in a scary, business-like manner. Nothing against Buddy, but if he kicked 5 there wasn't a person in the Front Row without a High 5 & not a footy-fan in the Country who didn't read about it Monday morning. Gunston isn't All Australian & most non-Hawks would know the number on the back of his jumper. I can see him kicking 3 each week for the next 10 years

Thats 650 goals. Not bad. Will get him up to around 800!

He looks like he may have filled out a bit in some of the training clips as well. He is already good one on one….with a few extra kg's who knows how good he could get.

** Thinking about having a Supercoach nibble.
