Gov is a gun KPP in his prime. Is have thought $900-$1M is about right

That's match winner coin.

He's a gun defender, but he ain't no match winner.

WCE find themselves in a predicament list/cap wise.

West Coast have reportedly tabled an offer of $4 million over five years. Does that get it done? Or is someone going to come over the top with something unreasonably lucrative?

On a side note, if WC were to lose Gaff and McGovern as free agents, what would be the likely compensation? Would they get one first-rounder based on ladder position or two?

If they pay a cent more then they needs their heads read.

Compensation? 1st round pick.

They may be better off in the long run by letting McGovern and Gaff go, and buying back in to the 2018 draft with 2 x likely top 10 picks.

Not a match winner? Clearly not watching enough WC games. If it wasn' for McGov we would have lost countless games over the past 2 years. And if he can improve on his swingman game he is definitey work the coin.

Basically won the final against the pooer last year

He is a match saver, which is just as good as a match winner. Especially when you can blow a winning lead like WC.

Not quite, but I acknowledge that he is elite in his position.

He is our best player and has won us more games, than anybody else on the list that is still fit. Maybe only Shuey or Yeo have put in the same rare match winning efforts (excluding NN).

The guy is a big game player, he takes match saving marks and can even kick a clutch goal. Super aggressive and nails opponents at important times in a match.

Don't bother arguing

One would think that losing Danger and Lever, plus the 25% cap increase would give them a pretty good ability to poach a player. If not they are doing something wrong.
If you had the cap space, why did the Crows match Melbourne's offer or get close to it?

The first offer to Lever from the Crows at $300k per year and he went to the Demons for $700k per year. That does say that you have lot in the cap?

McGovern will get $800k with the Eagles, teams will need to pay $1m per year to get him.

I really like your list and so does the other 17 clubs. Sloane will have multiple Victorian clubs offering big money, Rory Laird while being SA is quality needs to be resigned on good coin, and Tom Lynch is pretty good as well and out of contract.

Last year you signed Gibbs and Mitch McGovern on pretty good money.

Walker, Betts, Crouch brothers, Smith, Talia, and Jacobs all signed but are ex, current or future All Australians.

The issue with Lever is the club refuses to pay overs for potential. They have a tier rating system that dictates their pay range. Lever wasnt in the top tier of players and so wouldnt get paid the same as Sloane or Tex for instance.
Now thats something they have been criticized for and they may need to change.
They would rate JMcG top tier and would get offered a big contract.

Wasn't that thrown out the window with the Jenkins contract?

You would hardly be paying for potential with Lever, he's been bloody excellent the last 2 years!

I wouldnt have paid what they did for JJ but after Danger leaving and having no replacement for JJ in that forward ruck position, and his good form that year, he had them over a barrel.

Do teams get two compensation picks?
Good question.

I would assume that to be the case.
The pick is based on the 'net' ins and outs of the FA period, so if for example you lost both Gaff and McGov on 5x $1m/y deals, I'd expect you would get a couple of firsts which would equate to a start of first rd pick (ie pick 1). If you then secured Rory Sloane (hypothetically because we all know he will sign shortly!) on 6x $1.3m) then you net drops

It's never happened yet and the AFL will need to make up another policy on the run when it does

Still we don't pay the top players enough and probably overpay thelower end which is why we secure Cheney, Hampton, Seedsman, Graham and Lowden types each year.

Ot works if you are towards the bottom of the ladder and need to boost depth (eg Melbourne under Roos with Vince, Cross, etc) but at the top you need elite players to stay
