Lots of positives, Rockliff, SPP and a Oak in good form and Lycett and Ryder perfectly complimentary rucks!
Butter looks good, Watts isn’t a bust yet.

Negatives - I’m worried about Marshall and Jonas.

Thought Clurey looked much better this week.
Also never really been a fan but I really liked Amon’s game today.
Pleasing to see the real Rockliff turn up.
Also said numerous times last year that we look better with Boak in the middle.

There's space in the defence for both Hartlett and Broadbent.

The umpires gave North Melbourne some gimme goals and 50m penalties for absolutely nothing to make the scoreline look more respectable for them - they should have lost by 30+ points while playing four more players than us.

That's what the forward line will look like against a standard AFL one when Dixon is playing, because he's like a black hole that sucks all the defenders toward him.

Burton got into it after half time.

Rockliff - 41 disposals, 11 contested possessions, 2 goal assists, 2.2

Watts - 24 disposals, 12 marks, 3 goals assists, 1.0...that's my bad ass mother****er!

We're on a mission from god.

Positives: We have certainly improved our ball movement, the recruits & draftees all look promising.

Negatives: The defence at times looks brittle, Jonas needs to lift.

All in all I expect a few teething problems with a new look side but I will be pleased as long as the ball movement and game style continue in today's fashion.

I think defences in general will be under the pump more often this year until it all settles.

Ryder injury scare sours high-scoring Power victory
PORT Adelaide midfielder Tom Rockliff is back to his influential best after an impressive outing in the Power's 21-point win in their JLT Community Series encounter against North Melbourne at Alberton Oval on Saturday.
After an underwhelming first season with the Power, the former Brisbane skipper turned it on with a game-high 42 disposals, 17 marks and nine clearances.
Youngster Zak Butters punched his round one ticket with another strong showing, kicking three goals

Rockliff and Boak - Thriving in their natural roles, both turned back the clock today

Watts - Looks good now that he's out of our cluster**** of a forward line, hopefully has a much better season ahead of him

Butters - Gun, lock for Round 1

Amon - Has probably just had his best two weeks in a Port guernsey. Never would've thought I'd be saying this a month ago but he's earned himself a spot for around 1 IMO.

Duursma - Don't care how much Ken apparently likes him, he's not ready. Has potential but he's still way too error prone and has no composure whatsoever. Give his spot to Mayes.

Thought that was a good step up from last week.

We got trounced at the centre clearances early and North capitalised on every chance to put a score on the board, but once we fixed that up we looked pretty in control of the game.

We look so dangerous moving the ball forward, it's like watching a totally different team from what we saw in 2018. It's kind of bittersweet vindication for everything we were saying about the way we played last year. The overlapping run and handball, the little angled kicks to open up space. It's actually entertaining to watch, even if it doesn't always come off.

Defence still looked a little dodgy at times. I think it might take until quite some time into the season before we settle on what our best setup looks like back there. It has an unstable, unsure look about it at the moment. That needs to change.

Good to get a win on the board at the heartland. Serious stuff starts now.

Players:

Powell-Pepper - Started like a house on fire but fell out of it from there. Looks fit and motivated. Love seeing him bursting out of the middle in that first quarter. Needs to be more composed and slow down a bit when he releases the ball though because he has a habit of making a mess of his good work in those situations.

Burton - Vanilla game. Made a couple of errors, did a couple of nice things. I think Hartlett and Broadbent will put serious pressure on his spot in the team.

Ryder - Hardly touched it but was great in the ruck. Hopefully not seriously injured. Ryder finishing the game on the bench with a glum look on his face is becoming borderline meme material.

Motlop - Had a mixed game. Thought his defensive pressure was top class. Some of his ball use was magical but on other occasions he downright murdered the football taking ridiculous risks. I think he'll benefit from our new game style enormously.

Ebert - Struggled. His hands are normally so good but they were like concrete today. Don't know what's going on there. Maybe a confidence issue trying to learn the new position.

Gray - Sublime as per usual. His first quarter was unreal.

Boak - Back to his best, there's no doubt about that. Big bonus for us heading into the new season because I'm not sure many people banked on having Travis playing this sort of football in 2019.

Rockliff - Also back to his best. You don't lose your ability overnight. Playing injured last year, will be much more effective this year.

Marshall - Made a lot of mistakes but kept trying. We need to persist with him because it'll pay dividends down the track.

Amon - His second half was as good as I've seen him play. It would be great if he could find that level consistently.

Clurey - Much better today than last week.

Butters - Brilliant again. He's always a step ahead of the play and just makes stuff happen. Unbelievable to think he's a 0 game player.

Rozee - Started slowly but grew into the game a bit. Nice attempt at a hanger. I think at this stage he's a 'nearly' sort of player at this level but you can definitely see the quality.

Duursma - Made a lot of errors with the football but gee he can run all day and has an AFL ready body. At risk of provoking the masses, he reminds me of 2013-2014 era Cam O'Shea (in a good way).

Watts - Another guy who made plenty of mistakes but was overall pretty decent. 24 touches and 12 marks is great output for the floating half back type role he's being deployed in. I'm happy for him to start R1 in this role.

Bonner - Tidy enough, didn't really notice him much for good or bad.

Drew - Solid. I think he plays the first few games then makes way for Ollie. A good backup at this stage.

Lycett - Showed everyone what he can do today. Solid ruckwork, nice forward play, great second efforts. A weapon in combination with Ryder.

Byrne-Jones - Had a fair bit of the pill, kicked a couple of goals. Nice day out and he probably needed it to secure his R1 spot.

Westhoff - Typical game from him, very good all over the park.

Lienert - Injured early which is bad timing for him given the competition for spots down back.

Jonas - Didn't think he was as bad as some others have been saying. Certainly a big step up on last week.

Houston - Played his usual, solid as a rock, reliable game.

I'm pretty pleased with the result today, though the Ryder injury kind of leaves a bit of a bad taste and the defence seemed flimsy at times, but overall happy enough. Felt good to be back at the footy again.

Loved Rocky's game, was more like the player I was hoping to see last year, hopefully he can stay fit and keep finding the ball like that. Thought Amon played a really good game as well, last season I was very anti but he showed some good form today for me.

Lycett showed his worth today, and will be especially important if Ryder doesn't come up for Round 1 (a mate texted me saying fractured cheekbone, wait for a report from the club obviously, but at least with Lycett we don't have the ruck black hole that we did last year (Frampton not getting selected aside)).

Really liked the game from Butters again, and you'd have to think him likely for Round 1, though I did worry for him when he spent about a minute vomiting before the run throughs after half time. Looks to be a player. Rozee did a bit but I feel could have done more in a few situations, certainly will learn with time though. Durrsma I like but I don't think he should play Round 1, just made a few pretty elementary errors today, but liked the effort he showed, will certainly improve and get games this season.

I need to get that double 50m rule exaplained to me (or at least watch the replay), we couldn't work out what was going on the first time with DBJ. The second time it happened it looked like the North guy veered into Westhoff and the umpire called a second 50... That'll take some getting used to.

Hopefully we can build some confidence and go to the MCG with the belief we can get a win.

This season might take a while to sort itself out with the new rules. The first quarter was insane, it really was basketball stuff. The game settled into something a little more manageable after that.

Rockliff was in everything. Had a huge game.
Watts probably played one of his best games in his roaming role.
Lycett is a man mountain. So mobile and inventive for a big guy. Well worth the effort.
Butters is jaw dropping freakish.
SPP early was a Bugatti bulldozer. Really crashed through with flair and pace
Duursma the X man works hard up and down the ground. Will be a good un.
Westhoff is still classic casual.
Boaky found plenty of it on ball again and generally used it. He is untidy below his knees though.
Clurey much better this week.
I didn't mind Jonas's game. Brown wasn't a factor and TJ was trademark physical.
Drew just looks like a professional footballer. Clever in tight and an option out wide.

Game plan much more exciting than the past few years. Dare I say a bit Geelong like with quick instinctive movement. The defensive work around the ground improved as the game went on.

Enjoyable game! Ball movement very encouraging at times.

Rockliff, Boak, Butters & Lycett probably my best.

Hopefully Ryder is fine (have said that quite a few times after a game last couple of years).

There's so much to be excited about from that game. Love the new game plan and skills also seem to be a lot better too.

Butters, what a talent!
Rocky incredible
SPP looking awesome
Lycett showing why he was worth a 5 year deal

so many more impressive players, too many to name.

The players look like they are really enjoying themselves too which is such a huge contrast to the horrible **** they had to play last year.
