Top 30?

The bloke has clearly showed signs of a top 10 player.. it's just a matter of finding out what makes him tick.

I think we saw what he can do last yr.. Freo and that 4 goal game last yr at the G. When he takes a hold of a game.. he's brutal.
Top 10 player in the whole comp?

He’s not even close.

I'm not even saying he's top 50 at this stage.. he's shown enough signs that he is potentially a top 10 player.. once he starts pulling off those 25 possy games.. Kati damage control.

Mate he's still young.. what he's shown is ridiculous. We did get it right at pick 5.

I hope he realises that potential, but the club needs to be realistic with his contract. Pay him the big bucks when he’s earnt it.

My gut tells me this bloke will perform well in finals.

You don't trade players like that.. and if we're trading him for a top 10 pick well what can we do.. have to accept it.. not all is lost.. but I seriously can't be f starting all over again with an 18 yr old.

Just like gws paid $1 mil for Scully?

Mate get the contract ready and sign this brut for a long time.. put your trust in the player man. Just me.. I'm a people's person.

You want to win premierships.. you simply don't give up players like De Goey. You're selling your soul mate.

I said during the pre season (prior to his indiscretion) that I had a gut feeling he would be gone at the end of the year. I still believe he won't be hanging around.
Shame because I reckon he is going to become an absolute beast of a player.
If he does leave I just hope we get decent compensation.

“A Collingwood great” would place him in the same conversation as players like Buckley, Swan and Pendlebury. That’s a massive call.

I’d settle for him becoming a top 30 mid in the comp who stays out of trouble and plays full seasons.
It would place him with hall of fame inductees like Banks, McGuane, Waters, Max Richardson, Licuria, Burns, Clement, A Rocca, Millane, Ray Shaw, Tony Shaw, Barry Price etc etc.

Even better if he gets to all time great status like Bucks et al.

He certainly has the potential to reach the hall of fame status. You seem keen to run down the possibilities De Goey presents. Contracts need to consider potential because if you don't someone else will . If we stuck with a $400k one year contract offer like you suggest it's akin to pushing him out the door. Someone else will trump that easily and he will be gone with substandard compensation coming our way. Bad player management for mine.

Look re.. Im all about the team.. if we trade De Goey.. better be for better structure.. using the pick possibly for a tilt at Lynch. Some shit like that.. if we lose him.. regardless of who we get.. I'd be absolutely guttered anyhow. Similar feeling to the Shaw/Adams trade. Rip my heart out a little even though we got someone reasonable enough in return.

I'm definitely in the sign him up camp, but it wouldn't surprise me either if he went looking for a fresh start. I hope that doesn't eventuate though..

I think you're all jumping at shadows, really. The article just said that St Kilda has an interest in him,as does a number of clubs. It was a bit of a nothing article, really, just based on speculation.I'm sure Collingwood knows how important a player he is to us,and will do everything it can to re-sign him sometime during the season.

It's the Ameet Bains scumbag legacy - ****er has no respect and was constantly putting other teams young talent on the trade table for them (inappropriately).

I wouldn't put too much stock in that story - reporters often try to sow a seed of discontent disguised as some "other clubs are circling" copy out of their asses with a soft target like DeGoey, on the off chance it might bear some juicier fruit later...

Good work from JDG’s manager to keep him relevant, IMO. One thing I haven’t been critical of over the past five years is our ability to retain players we wanted to keep. Only Beams stands out to me as someone through that time that we were desperate to retain so it’ll get done.

JDG will get his market rate of $550-600k for 2-3 years from us because no club will take the risk of the massive deal to bring him across. By the end of that deal it’ll be considered cheap!

Edit: anyone thinking we can keep him on less should probably consider the hierarchy of our contracts. IMO, by years end he’s a 20 possession (10 of those contested), 4 clearance, 1 goal a game player and all at 70%+ efficiency. That puts him clearly behind only Pendles, Treloar, Sidebottom, Grundy, Elliott and Moore then on par with Adams and Howe. If you’re in the top 10 priority contracts on an AFL list for 2019 you easily justify a salary in excess of $500k.

The reason for bolding his efficiency is that anyone that spends as much time forward of the contest as he does and goes at that rate is big time.

He's not saying he is a top 10 player now, rather that he has the potential to be a top 10 midfielder with his attributes.

It's a fair call imo - I know it's hard at times to look past the indiscretions but despite how shit we've been off field since he was drafted he was tracking in a positive direction and I believe he will continue to do so.

The kid has been borderline dominant in a number of games already and if that sort of potential is realised on a more consistent basis then we clearly will have a top-10 calibre mid on our hands.

First preference would be to keep JDG. However if he is leaving we should strike a deal with GC. From memory there has been a link between JDG and GC before.

If we have a pick between 7-12 and GC finishes bottom 2-3, we should look to do something like this:
- Sign Lynch on Free Agency and GC gets pick 3-4 as compo
- Trade our first round and JDG for that pick 3-4.

So essentially we get Lynch and pick 3-4 (for a King brother) for JDG and our first round. GC get JDG and a top 10 pick for Lynch (effectively 2 first round picks). You saw how desperate they were last year to get talented ready made youngsters in with Weller for pick 2.

Out of all the interested clubs in Richmond, Hawthorn and us, we'd be the only club with that talented young player to offer and could win us the race for Lynch

Degoey would demand a top 5 pick alone no need to add the extra pick.

Nothing to see, poor 'pre-season' article, that's all it is.

My two cents worth, we gain very little in a direct swap between Linch and De Goey.

Degoey would demand a top 5 pick alone no need to add the extra pick.

The extra pick is to get GC not to match the free agency offer. If JDG is worth a top 5 pick Lynch is worth more than the straight compo. Just as they won't trade Lynch for JDG in a straight swap.

It's basically arbitraging the free compo pick so both sides come out with a better result. Like the Dal Santo trade

It's a possibility. Good run with injuries over his career and Lukosius could make it a conversation.

For me it's less whether he's better than Buddy, as he's almost identical in play to Nick Riewoldt - he's just slightly taller and a MUCH better kick (as in elite or near elite by midfield standards). Not as one take overhead as Nick which he'll need to work on if he wants to reach that level of greatness. But he's still a capable mark and takes plenty, including contested. He just has that completely undefendable game. You almost need to have someone stay in the def 50m and someone up the field who picks him up as it's not realistic to defend him individually as per Nick Riewoldt in his prime. Hang back and he'll take mark after mark up the ground and drill passes to teammates or run with the ball himself. Follow him up the ground and he'll gut run back towards goal and take the mark inside 50m on you before you can get back, or if you somehow keep up with him, he'll then proceed to lead and take the grab before you can get your breath back to make any attempt to contest.

I don't see Lukosius kicking as many goals per game as Buddy. He could have a 70/80 goal season and several in the 50s and 60s, but you don't waste him so close to goal. You want him pushing up the ground and let him work his man over because kicking goals isn't the only way he adds value.

Overall, if he's Nick Riewoldt, that's a huge success, but also someone he is very capable of replicating the play of, in the way Jonathon Brown was able to replicate the play of Wayne Carey. Though hopefully Lukosius unlike Brown doesn't have the better part of his career ruined by injury and has a much longer prime.
Having a Reiwoldt type would be great but you still need good players around him to get the the job done. That's just way too much to give up for someone.
