I agree Dez, it makes little sense you have Jones and Vince performing this role.
Viney also mature beyond his years, it's not a talent thing with Lewis because he's still very good it's just a fit issue where I'd prefer to see the young players we've got continue to thrive in the roles they had this year with the backing the coaching staff has given them.

Mind you I'm not going to complain if we give up bugger all and get him.

The argument that is being used for JOM applies to Jordan equally here.

JOM injured for 2 years but hawks selling the farm to get him. Logic, 'well yes he is injured but the size of the contract you are offering him suggests you rate him'.

Same thing for the Dees. You can't offer him a dream 3 year deal for big bucks and expect to get it done for a 4th rounder even though he is 28/9. I think 2nd rounder plus player will be the final trade.

Next time the great Roughy rocks up to the club rooms he won't know anyone at this rate.

This is the most interesting draft period by far

You guys were going to win a flag with Dangerfield.

BTW i think you left a name or 2 off your list. And there is still a lot of trade week to go.

Not many Geelong supporters thought we'd win a flag, and you flogs told us all off season he wouldn't make a difference.

Funny that you accuse me of leaving names off the list, right after you've done it yourself. I've also left a few off that you've lost.

Will be interesting in the extreme to watch Hawthorn next season.

I'd have thought Lewis would be more value to Richmond, Gold Coast or Essendon than Melbourne. Certainly been a fun trade period thus far.
Why do Essendon need another inside midfielder ? Watson, Heppell, Myers, Bird etc. all play that role. Lewis is a good footballer but the Bombers don't need him. I suspect he would be a good fit at Collingwood with the kids that they have brought in to the club

Hawthorn supporters are absolutely delusional if they think they're getting anything of worth from Melbourne here.

Here are the salient facts - or as close to them as we can get from the media circus.

Hawthorn have decided to refresh the top-end of their list and aren't confident about their engine room. They've poached Vickery to fill the role left by Hale that Ceglar was unable to have a go at due to injury, and have supposedly paid him a little more than they wanted due to Richmond threatening to match the offer if their compensation was not maximised.

They've chased Titch and JOM, both of whom have agreed to come, but both of whom needed to be traded for rather than poached. Having a 3x Premiership list isn't cheap - and the cap is tight with no major retirements this year.

Clarkson has sat down with Mitchell and Lewis, and suggested that he believes their time at Hawthorn is coming to an end. They're not being kicked out, but the club would like them to explore their options. Mitchell says "yep, the family have actually been thinking of moving to Perth for some time, I'm 34 and the end is near, it makes sense to do it now if it benefits the club". Pick 88, cursory pick, all is well.Lewis says "are you ****ing kidding me, I'm meant to be the next captain of this club and now I'm damaged goods. I'm 30, I'm playing good footy, **** off."

He goes to Pickering and tells him to trade him to Melbourne; they play at the G, train at AAMI and, having witnessed the Dogs' flag this year, he has the chance to win another if he can get a decent contract. Pickering contacts Melbourne, who are surprised but eager to explore it having seen what Mitchell went for. The list is young, they're big on getting winners and good personalities to guide the youth. The clubs agree a deal, Lewis is happy to go, but Hawthorn get cold feet and remember that letting go of their best two midfielders - one and two in the BnF - may be a rash idea.

They go back on the deal, Wright is confident that the damage is reparable and an apology from Clarkson to Lewis goes down okay. Lewis sleeps on it, realises he's still angry and that the trust is broken, his head is no longer there, and goes across to Pickering to tell him to get the deal done on Friday.

Hawthorn dig their heels in and demand more than the cursory pick offered by Melbourne.

From here, nobody knows. It could well be a second round pick, or maybe its a third. Insiders are split.

What Melbourne isn't going to do, however, is deal a best 22~ player to Hawthorn for a guy they thought they were getting for chips. They also have the Hibberd deal to get over the line. Suggestions of Frost, Hunt etc are ludicrous. If Hawthorn think they can get/make something out of Dawes, Lumumba, Kennedy-Harris, Michie or Newton - they can have them for free. I'd imagine the club is willing to deal Trengove, if JT wants to go. Harmes, Kennedy and Neal-Bullen are all around that best 22 mark - but none have yet locked a spot in. The latter particularly looks to have a bright future, with the way he played VFL at 20, but is far down the list and will only be pushed further if we sign Lewis. All three would probably get a game for Hawthorn in 2017, especially if Breust leaves in the case of Kennedy.

Where it goes next week is another matter, but the damage is done. Lewis is contracted, but him staying would not be conducive to rebuilding the culture of the club around these younger guys.

My opinion - a third rounder and a swap of fourths will be the end deal.

Age is just a number, I would consider Viney and Gawn leaders despite their age to go along with guys like Watts, Vince, Jones, McDonald, Jetta, etc.

We don't lack leadership.
We still had too many matches last season - at least a handful - where the chips were down and the players lost their structure. Jones is our only proven leader. Cross was another, Dunn too before he was dropped for being too slow, they're rolled gold. Lewis would be another.

If we get any value for Dawes it'd be hilarious
If Dawes is part of the trade then a 2nd + player would need to become 1st + 2nd + Dawes. Mid 2nd on their own is probably enough which Melbourne should be able to get given their growing depth. I still can't work out how Lewis came 2nd in the BNF - I am far from an expert but I remember more games this year where I was thinking is Lewis out injured or he was playing badly than he was playing good.

Tulip not a bad stab at it; planning with Mitchell was a little more detailed than you're presuming.

From what I'm told there was no trade agreed so someone, somewhere jumped the gun.

Lewis will play at Melbourne unless something drastic goes wrong. He'll get his pay day and he's earnt it. Let's not forget who his manager is, though. Tiprat par execellence.

As to the trade I'm also told there will be a Melbourne player involved.

Reckon our midfields set, we have holes in defence and up forward.

It might come down to whether Lewis wants to get to Melbourne, or just wants out of Hawthorn.

If the relationship is irreconcilable, The Hawks could shop him around. A club like Brisbane or Gold Coast might decide his leadership would be invaluable and worth a second round pick.

Then Hawthorn say to Lewis, either you accept a trade to the highest bidder or you stay and honor your contract.

Then Lewis and Melbourne have decisions to make.

Agreed, thought he was pretty poor in a lot of games.

You'd have to be mad to go to GC or Brisbane at the moment if you're in a position to get games elsewhere. If he wants to go to Melbourne, and he probably doesn't want to go too far considering his young daughter, it'll get done.

I agree about not wanting to go to QLD. But if Hawks have a choice of pick 66 from Melbourne or a 2nd rounder from GC, they wouldn't accept 66.
