I've been one of Rachele's biggest critics ....b4 it became fashionable

TBF we need to put some things into balance:

1. Rachele is not a natural footballer ....he's a natural soccer player, and therefore doesn't have many attributes required of an elite AFL footballer

2. He's added a lot of muscle to his frame ....often that slows a player's reaction times and speed off the mark
IMO he'll need another PS to learn how to play with the extra weight and regain that speed off the mark ......he's currently getting caught in tight situations & is at a loss how to extract himself

3. In conjunction with point 2 .....he's lost his strut ....Rachele's strut makes him a 20% better player ....that confidence you're better than opponents
Get his speed back ...get his reaction times up, and that strut will come back

So he's got a bit to work on .....but a bit like Jones, Rachele's lack of 360 degree awareness, may inhibit midfield opportunities

You’d rather our players lose 50/50 contests when the ball is in dispute because you don’t want them to get suspended. Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?

Ridley didn’t bump. He just went harder at the ball and won it. If you’re interested in winning games of footy, not sure how many games we’d win if all our players treated contests like Rash did there.

I’m actually shocked how anyone can’t see that. What is going on.
What contest are you talking about? Rachele was second to the ball. Ideally there you execute a legal tackle after Ridley collects it. If you're not executing a legal tackle, it's much better to pull out than to bump given that bumping is almost a guaranteed lengthy suspension.

There are criticisms of Rachele's defensive game but I don't think this is an issue at all. Guarantee if he had gone in he'd be suspended.

For context, Murphy is supposedly a defensive player.

Many even believe he plays a defensive forward role.

Murphy had 7 pressure acts 2 tackles, none I side 50. With 1 disposal in the last quarter.

Rachele 21 pressure acts, 3 tackles inside 50. Which is equal highest in the game with Taylor.
Yes only 3 disposals in the final quarter, but they all counted with 1.1.

Rachele's defensive issues are as mythical as Murphy's forward defensive, or any defensive, role.

Rachele & Keays have shown more defensive pressure & offensive output than Murphy... so why the **** is he still in the side?

Geez please don’t talk sense or actually comment on things that stand out . Too many people on here don’t like to be corrected.

We paid a massive price for him. Expect criticism. This isn’t tiddlywinks. And sometimes Rash plays like it is. No one is doubting his talent.

And I’d be little fairer on Laird, who is an all Australian.
3rd year player that plays the graveyard high half forward position best in the team. I just read the criticism and it doesn’t make sense. Mercurial type players don’t just dish out random handballs to players about to be tackled aka Laird, they look to create, and sometimes that leads to taking the extra step and getting tackled themselves. Risk v reward.

That has been coached out of him. Our coaching unit is a past players scrappers union, they know how to coach scrappers not talent, they want talent to learn how to be scrappers.

It's hardly an experiment. It's not uncommon for teams in the league opt to run defensive or more outside leaning small forwards in the bottom slots of the forward line. Right now, we see guys like Alex Neal-Bullen, Beau McCreary, Sam Switkowski, Toby Bedford as the more defensive specialists. Equally, guys like Lachie Fogarty, Lachie Murphy, Jackson Mead, James Jordan as attempts to give reinforcement to both areas. Everyone there is <= 0.6 goals per game and outside of Murphy, mainstays in currently good teams.

Few reasons why this occurs:

* You have the salary cap to deal with. People who kick goals tend to get paid and the forward line is not an area where you want an excessive amount of salary cap being soaked up in. After all, there are more important positions, especially at the bottom slots of a lineup. The name of the game here is as much value as you can get as cheaply as you can get. Equally goalkicking is a talent game, and the value of 2-3 big time goalkickers is it does buy flexibility here.
* It's also find to hard reliable goalkickers at this point in a teams list who aren't horribly flawed in their own right. After all, those who are reliable are selected. Equally, you're likely not getting the amount of goals out of this slot to off-set those flaws (the max you could expect from a 6th-7th forward would be 1 a game).
* A forward line needs to be able to stifle opposition ball movement. No good kicking another half a goal a game if the opposition is going to have a field day transitioning through your defensive zones.

Is it time we should be looking to move on Murphy? Probably, but that's more to do with our needs changing in this slot and Chayce Jones falling down the pecking order.

Probably?

Seriously, I don’t know any Crows supporters who actually have the time for him. And as for leadership, does anyone at AFC actually know what it actually means?

We have given this spud 100+ games.

One can only hope that when his contract is up end of next year, we don’t renew it.

Tall poppy syndrome is alive and well
Lauchy Murphy is a better footballer than all of us. But it’s not tall poppy syndrome when we point out his flaws is it?

Cmon, this is a footy forum where we discuss our opinions on players. What makes Rash immune from this in the same way we critique other players?

It’s not tall poppy syndrome. There’s a clear pattern/flaws in his game that many astute footy watchers have noticed and commented on. Including footy analysts/media.

No one is trying to hang him out to dry. We want him to be the player he was projected to be. But there is concern there. And, unfortunately, when you’re a very high draft pick, this comes with the territory.

He's 21, he's tracking absolutely fine FFS

I feel like Rachele sometimes makes, in Deion Sanders terms, business decisions.

Go hard at a line ball with 8 seconds to go in a loss? No thanks.

Flatten a bloke and possibly win the ball or likely get suspended? Not worth it.

Dive into the pack to attempt a tackle (when I'm not the inside mid)? Not paid to do that, not best use of my skills.

What a political way to say Rachele is ‘soft’

Whenever the game is on the line, Rachele is always involved. Whether it comes off or not can be debated, but you can’t say he ever goes ‘missing’.

He is one of our classiest midfielders in a midfield full of shit skills. You want him on the outside and be fed the ball.

If that means he isn’t involved in the coal face hitting and taking big tackles then good. That’s what the Crouch and Lairds of the world are for. It should be what the Murphys of the world are for.

He’s going to be a gun and just won a game through individual brilliance. How he has become the media and fans whipping boy I’ll never know.

Seems people don’t appreciate a small forward who kicks goals.
It’s not what we’ve been accustomed to lately.

A bit like Simon Goodwin took Bernie Vince under his wing in the pre-season prior to Vince's B & F, I hope Josh Rachele has a pre-season where he works harder than ever and gets to a level that allows him to be the best he can be.

I think the penny has dropped for him re team work, body language and efforts needed over the last month. It has nothing to do with goal celebrations - they're fine. It has everything to do with acknowledging team mates and not coming out in the media saying "he wasn't sure" why he wasn't playing midfield.

And that incident where he apparently pulled out against Ridley on the weekend. I think he was fooled by the bounce of the ball. He had eyes for the ball and had it stood on end instead of skip through to Ridley, he would have been first to it and away. Instead the ball got to Ridley, who took the ball cleanly and protected himself perfectly by turning his hip. Rachele, having at the last minute realised he wasn't first to the ball, instinctively also turned his hip to protect himself. There wasn't enough time to make the decision to tackle and the ball skipped away too quickly for him to go hard and low. I don't think you can be critical of Rachele for this. And I have been very critical of him before.

Reward for effort. This might be a turning point for a very talented player.
