What I would like to know is how many of these queue jumping illegal economic migrants have we sent back to where they came from?
It's high time this piss weak Government showed some balls and took control of the situation and that includes not only getting rid of those who by their actions are clearly not the type of people we need in this country but also putting pressure on the Indonesian Government to stop the illegals from not only leaving Indonesia but using there as a base.

Howard , despite rhetoric, didnt do much of thet either

Seems like the greatful, appreciative people we are accepting into this country are showing their gratitude by escaping, rioting and burning down buildings.

But that's okay, these poor little souls are now being moved to the mainland. That will fix the problem! :thumbsu:

Wonder if we can send these 6,000 back and take in 6,000 Japanese people! :thumbsu:

Arent you being hypocritical by saying japanese refugees are OK ?

Why not Haitians ?

Indonesia had a tsunami a few years back too

Worth remembering that "Tough talking" John Howard eventually let the majority of the tampa people into the country, by one means or another"
Yes, after the unnecessary waste of millions of dollars of taxpayers money transporting them all over the Pacific. It is puzzling why so many Howardites seem to favour the most expensive solutions, and an inherent lack of engagement with Indonesia (as every single-country solution to human trafficking has failed thus far).

Tunisia as we speak have just endured weeks of having 6,000 asylum seekers per hour crossing the border, yet we complain when that hits an annual figure - despite living in one of the wealthist nations in the world.

So if petrol is $2 a litre in some country we shouldn't complain if we have to pay $1.40? Completely and utterly irrelevant just like your statement. At least those that you have chosen to use didn't pay to fly to another country and then pay big dollars to some crook to get them to Australia in an unseaworthy boat.

People as a commodity. We have hit rock bottom.

Metaphors are dangerous there is no such thing as a "queue" it is as real as the "Invisible hand"

No. Japanese refugees would be of a higher standard than those that are willing to set fire to tax payer funded accomodation and start riots for having to wait to be offered a better quality of life that they are taking from legitimate refugees who are willing to follow due process.

What benefits do the Tunisian refugees get ? Do they have an Asylum Seeker concession card ?

Didn't Howard slow the procession of boats .... or was that just a falacy ?

Contra there is a queue.

We have a quota of 15 k a year from refugee camps. The UNHCR recommends who is most at risk and Australia basically takes the most in need first, creating a long list. Many worthy applicants wait many years. For every economic refugee who can affoard a flight to Indonesia, about ten years average wages, and then pay about the same or more to get on a boat; if they are accepted they knock one place out of the quota and a worthy Christian out of dafur who has been waiting many years will not come this year.

These guys are jumping to the front of the line because they have more cash. It's beyond me how the ALP or it's supporters can support such a practice.

There is a strong undercurrent of racist in the right side of politics. Pauline would be proud.

Racism mainly has been a product of the left. The White Australia policy has been ALP policy for most of it's existence. It was the right who let in the Vietnamese boat people.

Howard didn't care about letting them in once his policies had stopped the boats. Stopping the boats and regaining control of Australia's border security and immigration was the reason for the tough talking.

If a Gillard goverment is so 'weak" in comparison, why are detainees resorting to more extreme measures than under the Howard regime ?

Because the asylum seekers were promised if they paid large sums to people smugglers to get them here, their applications would be processed within 90 days under the policy Julia herself drew up.

Asylum seekers didn't realise Labor's promises were worthless. But that is why they are now rioting and burning Christmas Island down. The Labor govt hasn't kept its word.

Could you people even consider the that labour (who started the detention camps in the first place, by the way) is tougher than your so called tough guys ?

A coalition govt will reopen Nauru immediately and will then enforce it. The boats will stop coming pretty quickly because the customers in ME will not pay the smugglers without a guaranteed product, as happened at the end of 2001, virtually overnight.

Really?

What are the applicants from UN refugee camps vying for the 13500 humanitarian quota in, if it is not a queue? Or are you saying there are are less applications than there are places? Or are you saying that unlawful boat arrivals who get visas are not taking the places of the apps from UN camps?

After all, Contra, you are an immigration lawyer, you know the truth about these matters. Please share.

Here we go typical labor letting boat illegal arrivals jump the queues of people that have been waiting patiently at UN refugee camps. At least the people waiting patiently dont come here and destroy property.

So what your are suggesting in effect is to bypass the present convenient use of corrupt Islamic Indonesia as a departure point? Which arguably is the main if not only reason we have the boat people problem at all.
If I had complete confidence in that happening GJ I would'nt hesitate to vote for them.

Ted Ted Ted, it's not the asylum seekers fault for setting fire and starting riots, it's yours and mine fault because we should just let everyone who wants to come here in.

We're rich, we can afford it.

I know PottSie stupid me why didn't I think of that?

rednecks, riddle me this:

If Australia was overtaken by (lets say) chinese who were systematically pursecuting your race, rounding them up, shooting them. Youve seen family members die, and you know your time will come..

Would you:
1) Seek help from the UN. Live in some skanky refugee camp which you know the UN will abandon if the chinese get a bit ansy about it. Possibly staying there for many many years...

2) Use all your means possible (money, contacts) to jump on a ship and head to a safer country.

Myself, I'd be No.2 all the way. What would you do ?

I would probably go with option 3.

3) Pass through several countries on my way to my preferred destination (Finland). Having paid for the privelidge of taking the place of a refugee at one of the camps in newcastle I would then show my gratitude by rioting and destroying property, because gawdammit, I paid good money to get to Finland and deserve much better than waiting for due process.

The best part of it is that many in Finland will actually defend my behaviour. :)

Well if I had access to minimum $750,000 in cash to pay a people smuggler to fly me to Cuba and stick me on a boat to United States, that's what I'd do.

And if I were even filthier richer I'd then pay $700K a pop to bring the extended family over, same smugglers, same route.

Actually your analogy is faulty. These asylum seekers are claiming they are fleeing persecution from their own country men, not from invaders from other countries.

So a better analogy would be that the Greens have taken over Australia and are forcing the people to live to the standard of the Chinese peasant, pre- 2000.

btw Bowen announced that 105 asylum seekers had been flown off Christmas islanmd to relieve congestion.

Well, 200 more have just arrived in the last two days.

This is such. a. farce.
