They've been going through the Ticketek databade again.

An application form for a Kangaroos Canberra membership turned up in my letterbox today.

Yeah got mine in the post today too. Fancy them thinking Swans members would buy a membership of their filthy club.

I got one of them. Can't blame them for trying I suppose, but considering the Sydney public didn't exactly swarm to buy memberships when they played up here a few years ago I can't see them selling too many Canberra memberships to Sydneysiders.

North try anything any everything to gain members, and to garner media attention, and good on them.

I wish my club was as forward about promoting themselves.

The chick who runs their media side (Michelle Clyne, is it?) does a terrific job.

Still crying crocodile tears on this one Beaussie? What is wrong with a club putting out membership propaganda to the people living in the Canberra/Sydney area? The thing that annoys me is people like you get on your soap box complaining about something like this & have a bit the other way if we did nothing, saying these no hopers don't work hard to promote their club no wonder they have no support.

I remember going back 3 or 4 years ago a similar thing was being brought up when we were playing games in Sydney & it was the belief that North were trying to pinch Sydney's supporters. I can tell you this was NOT the case, all we were trying to do & it seems now is trying to get football followers like yourself to buy a membership ticket if you choose. By doing this your not giving up support for Sydney if you continue buying your Sydney membership ticket.

There are plenty of people who support one club like in your case Sydney & are a member but are also a member of another club as well. It could be for a number of reasons why people do this, it could be another person you are close to supports another side to you & you like going to the footy with them. It could also be you have a soft spot for another side, so you go & watch them as well as your own or like in Perth, you love your footy & you want to see live footy each week so you buy a West Coast & Fremantle membership. The people I believe North are targeting is the last category, people who love footy in the Canberra & Sydney area who would like to see more live football than the 11 games a year the Swans get in Sydney.

Why in Gods name would someone want to buy a Weagles membership on top of their Dockers one (unless your Cometti and you want to purport that your neutral when everyone really knows your an E-girl)? I don't care that I have to watch the Weagles home derby on TV, buying one of their memberships would just be wrong (and I'm sure Weagles supporters would say the same thing)!

What utter tripe, would you like if the Swans brought the database for a North home game in Melbourne and sent everyone on it a Swans Victorian Membership booklet???? The biggest problem I have with it is why the hell are North bothering to send membership forms to people living in Sydney, knowing full well these people already rejected you once, heck when you did it in 1998 forms got sent to people in Melbourne. No club should send membership forms out cold turkey, only send them to people who WANT them not the other way around.

Well Carlton have taken direct mail to the next level (spam via Aussie Post).

Rather than just send out membership package info - they have issued cards and invoices without a subscription being ordered (this was sent to friends who were members in 2003).

They were so ****ed off, they'll most likely pay cash at the gate in protest rather then renew this season.

Curious to know if this was an isolated incident or was the norm for the blue baggers this year?

pav is 100% correct. There is no way on earth that I would consider buying a Dorker membership. I also don't even go to the Derby when it is their home game. I would NEVER pay a single dollar to support them.

Just think if you had become a member of the Roos back in 98, you could actually say you have been alive to see your side win a premiership.

Why would you buy another clubs membership?

To you Swans supporters here is some news. Like all my friends who live in Sydney and go to the footy we are Swans members so we get a good seat at the game and to support the only team in town.. But we are NOT Swans fans. We barrack first and foremost for North Melbourne in my case (sorry about 96) Or Richmond or Geelong or St Kilda or Carlton or Collingwood or Hawthorn...ie the clubs we have barracked for since childhood. On the days when our own team is not playing we cheer for the Swans but on at least one game a year at the SCG it gets really serious. By my recconning 40% of Swans members have another allegiance.
That is why s club might want to sell a membership. If you are going to the footy you might as well save some money and help any club that needs it. Without all clubs being healthy the whole competition is weaker.

Well said PJK. Also there would be a market of people that hate the Swans and another group that did like watching a more exciting team and would be prepared to buy a Roos membership.

The Swans members complaining here obviously have no concept of marketing and their ignorance shows.

Problem with North though is they have dropped the Ball with their CURRENT members ...

My Boss is one and He now only gets the standard season ticket....... (4 years ago it was Pagans Patrons or something like this) He said the club wouldn't do much to help him with seating arrangements when his son and friends all wanted to sit together......

So Now they just walk in and sit wherever they like without paying for reserved seats like they were willing to do. About a $500 loss for the club

They also lost a lot when the price kept going up for Melb. based members even when they ventured into the Canberra and Sydney markets and there were less games in Vic..

It's one thing to get members....It's another to KEEP them

Well said, but i don't think one supporter is going to matter??

Where i live, i lknow a heap of people who are becoming first time members, and also purchasing reserved seats, hence the reason, North Melbourne's memberships are going so well at the moment.

It will be even better when they change us back to North Melbourne. FOREVER!!!

What annoys me is the fact that I don't support the Kangaroos and don't like the fact that my personal details have been used on their database. As has been mentioned in another post, their last foray into Sydney was a dismal failure after they told the Sydney public they had no interest whatsoever in ever relocating to Sydney. Merely flying in and flying out throughout the season obviously didn't impress AFL supporters in Sydney and NSW. Not to mention the fact that Kangaroos staff would wears Swans scarves outside the SCG whilst handing out Kangaroos membership applications.

My guess is that this exercise will cost the Kangaroos alot more than they gain. How many Sydneysiders do you honestly think are going to travel down to Canberra for 4 Kangaroos games. I'll be going to game against the Swans but I will not be buying a membership of the Roos in order to attend.

Dodegy,

When football venues start treating EACH football club as an individual entity, then and only then, will supporters of each club be treated equally.

EG one year North were TENANTS of the MCG and the next minute, they were not tenants. It was very surprising to hear the MCG say North were no longer tenants at the 'G' even though our change rooms were in the Southern stand.

Our 'home ground' is now Colonial and guess what, North play quite a few Sunday games (this year) at the MCG.

I'll tell you why.

I am an Essendon supporter and Interstate Member who lives in Canberra. We dont get to see the Bombers play here live (and when they did come during the Wizard Cup last year they didn't even try).

I also bought a Canberra Kangaroos membership because I love football and appreciate a club who invests in the promotion of football in this city by coming here. So I bought a membership as a show of support and in the hope that, if enough people do it, they will continue to bring the highest quality league to us and not neglect us. It would not be a cheap exercise for North to come here and I would rather give my money to a club who struggles and still tries to do the right thing than the AFL.

Unfortunately Channels 9 and 10 seem to think that Canberrans are only interested in seeing the Sydney Swans. WRONG.

Your all missing the point we are trying to make, we don't have a problem with North trying to get members in Canberra outside their group of supporters - we have a problem about HOW they go about it. I don't like the idea that North are buying the personal details of people and sending them out info that they might not have any interest in. People should have the RIGHT to choose if they have the info sent to them, not forced upon them.

As I said I bet you wouldn't be happy if 15 other clubs membership forms ended up in your letter box now would you? Its not a question of trying to get members its a question of wether or not I have the right to privacy. Also if North must insist in using the databases, how about they limited sending out forms to people who live within 1 hours drive of Canberra, because your not going to get many Canberra members from people living in Sydney and Melbourne, the Swans do play on the same day that you play in Canberra, so Swans fans, living in Sydney aren't going to do both in one day now are they?

Also PJK the 40% you quote what bull****, sure we have members who support other clubs but not 40% of our members. Like to know how you even came up with that figure? I doubt very much that we have 9000 members who aren't Swans fans first.
