"We exist to win premierships"

Wow ok, that's a strong goal. You haven't really got close for the past decade, what are you doing to achieve that?

The Bunyip from Bungan Beach Misses the Point on Purpose …

….. Responding to a question at the club’s AGM about why Tredrea didn’t wasn’t (sic) being appointed to the board Koch said he felt uncomfortable about making a captains call and appointing Tredrea over another club past player and legend.

…. Koch said he wanted Tredrea to come in and get involved with the club this year at the levels below the board.
“I said to Warren get back involved, come on our committees and learn about the club,” Koch said.
“You’ve been away for 10 years, get involved with the club.
“Be on our footy committee, be on our board, financial and governance committee, our marketing committee like other players are.
“And I just don’t feel comfortable choosing him over other players who help the club out.”

…. Koch said if Tredrea did run for one of the member elected positions, he expected him to get a winning vote like Wanganeen did.
“When he ran for member elected who wasn’t going to vote for Gavin Wanganeen,” Koch said.

Admits (again) that he’s a Dictator

…. Koch said by him being allowed to choose who was on the Power board, it allowed him to target specific skills.

and Contradicts Himself in the Process.
As I posted before, this doesn’t make sense. It does not pass scrutiny.

“Couldn’t elect him over another past great”

What past great? Who couldn’t you select him over? What other past great has their hand up?

David is speaking gobbledygook here. It’s political speak where it sounds like he’s making a choice based on a reason but the reason is clearly a facade.

Then the asking him to be involved with the club before joining the board.

On face value that immediately sounds right…. But again under any kind of scrutiny it doesn’t hold up.

If that is the pre-requisite for a board position we then must take it that the board position will be filled by someone meeting this requirement. But I don’t believe it is a true prerequisite. If the next board appointment doesn’t meet this prerequisite what does that mean? Koch lied to us? Koch asked something of tredrea that he doesn’t expect of any other board candidates?

Also, have all our previous board appointments had to be involved in the club at a level before joining the board? I’m going to say I don’t think so.

I’m also annoyed that I, a normal pundit can identify and articulate these alarming issues with Koch’s claims but the media has not and will not.

Allowing the media to be so unregulated in a capitalist system has far too often allowed people in power to escape scrutiny, whether that be sports politics or business. We’re much less than what we can be because the info we get is sensationalised bullshit and ads.

Fair call I reckon. Stick him in the coaches box as a matchday analytics coach.
Well, he would probably go the way of Fiacchi and be suffocated from being any meaningful agent for change by Koch.

So yeah!
Put Tredders (and a few more past greats) into meaningful positions in the footy department, where they can impact positively towards on field success.

I only just read the adelaidenow piece posted by LR, Why The F*** would a bloke whose father played for the club, played in a Maggie's flag himself, and is our only AFL premiership captain need to learn about the club?

It's just another line of absolute bullsh*t from kokhead, and unfortunately more proof that the PAFC we have today is no more than a facsimile of what had made it great for the vast majority of its existence!

The problem in footy is how insular and relationship based the whole deal is. Work in footy media in SA and piss off the chairman or coach of one of the 2 sources of news and you've just totally ****ed yourself over.

Koch wants Tredders to walk around the club carrying the oranges for a while hoping that in due course he will become a yes man to kochead, I would much prefer Tredders waits until the next board election then enters under his own volition rather than bowing down to the Grand Poohbah's wishes.

Gee some people miss the point by a wide margin. We don't want Tredders on the board for business nous. We don't want him on the board for technical football analysis. We want him on the board so that when a bunch of people like Koch who have no idea what winning premierships looks like make stupid decisions like extending that deadshit loser coach's contract for the umpteenth time, there is somebody who can look them all in the face and say 'this club will never win a premiership with this man in charge - and I know because I've held that damn cup aloft myself and know what it takes'.

Or when they come to you with some Kochemamie idea about having dual captains, you can have both the balls & the experience as a past captain, to stop the stupidity from destroying the team & club.

Ding-ding-ding! ✅✅✅

In the aftermath of the Prelim debacle, things famously got ‘heated’ at 5AA studios when Hinkley was asked questions (by Tredrea) that weren’t lubricated softballs for the first time in a decade.

It’s like, wait, you’ve just been absolutely humiliated in front of the nation despite enjoying the strongest position a Prelim Finalist has ever enjoyed, and you’re getting sh¡tty because the club’s greatest player of the modern era is demanding answers?

It doesn’t take Benoit Blanc to deduce just how staunchly mediocre the club has become, how averse it is to performance evaluation, and what this means for Tredrea’s prospective candidacy going forward, does it?

This begs the question... can Koch be ousted from the Chairmanship? Or has he essentially been grandfathered in via the AFL and so is only answerable to them?

If it's the latter, we are royally screwed.

The only way Koch leaves is by choice, or some sort of misconduct/scandal that would see the AFL knock him on the head.

Port could finish 12th every year for the next decade, and as long as it remains afloat to provide revenues for the SMA and League, Koch will remain.

It’s literally down to one or two crucial poor decisions isn’t it? We could have afforded to not renew Ken back at the time. But Koch feared the mass of FB nuffies level spenders would be put out more than BF diehards would make up for with deeper buy in. I’m not sure Koch backs down there, and as much as I hate it I think he carries the board with better skill at playing the numbers. Even though a bad decision.

And as mentioned in the next post, the example of Tredders calling out from expertise another point dopey idea like co-captains, where board and management both interfere unduly with footy ops and misread the fans. Here I think KT/Ken back down because there’s no material downside in backing down for them, just a little bit of ego bruising. They’re just fiddling and would back off if pushed hard enough internally.

Good kinds of disruptions though. Useful to think through what would happen in the heat of the politics of each unique moment with the set of personalities trying to work together and around each other.

And FFS all Koch had to do was say “we’d be absolutely delighted to have Tredders back directly involved with the club again after such a long long time and we’re going to work together on finding the best role for him initially where he can really make a quick impact” and there would be expectation and excitement rather than angst. Was it that bloody hard David, even if you didn’t mean any of it?

Well we're stuffed then. He's reportedly retiring from TV next year, which no doubt means our club will be his own personal play thing for ever

Yeah, but it’s pretty clear they don’t want him involved — Koch knows Tredders won’t waste his time in subordinate arms-length roles, and nor should he have to.

Then he can throw his hands up and say, “well, I offered! 🤷‍♀️”, and he’s also bought time to groom a popular candidate to go head to head with Warren if the time comes, with the club/AFL veto up his sleeve after that.

Yep. He doesn't need a business background or a law degree to do what we need him to do. His resume is printed up on the wall at the Port Club, and it's a more impressive resume than everyone else on the board put together.

Yeah, I’m not sure where this general idea has arisen that to sit on a footy club board you’ve got to be a titan of industry, business mogul or own a boutique TEDtalk concern.

It certainly didn't concern those that support this general idea, such as Koch and a couple of posters in here, when orchestrating Wanganeen in and Fiacchi out. Yet Tredrea needs to "learn about the club".

I'm betting it will be Boak if he retires this year. On the Board he'd be a non-threatening Koch yes-man in the mould of Wanganeen and would demolish Tredrea in a popular election.
