Spot on. If you look at the pick alone. The trade is utter madness and a shafting. But when you dig into the detail and start to look at each of the factors, it's actually pretty good for GC.Does anyone else think that, sure by the current context, pick 2 is WAY overs, but if you look historically at who has been taken at pick 2, it kinda makes sense? And marks a shift (with free agency and more player movement than ever before) towards considering draft picks (even high ones) as the speculative/chance strategy they really are?
I am confident that Weller will play more games for them than their pick 2 would. I am hopeful Fremantle can retain whoever they draft, but think it will not be easy.Does anyone else think that, sure by the current context, pick 2 is WAY overs, but if you look historically at who has been taken at pick 2, it kinda makes sense? Happy to target their second tier non Victorian players like Martín and Swallow.Spot on. If you look at the pick alone. The trade is utter madness and a shafting. But when you dig into the detail and start to look at each of the factors, it's actually pretty good for GC.
There's a trend now with the absolutely top end picks being head hunted and now leaving. 15 years ago that was unheard of. But now it's becoming more common.
Given all the top end talent is Victorian it makes sense with what GC did.

All clubs want to lure players from other clubs, but Fremantle has been getting it done. We have some terrific foundations in place including an excellent coach, Fyfe as our captain, an emerging young list, a world class training facility and a terrific playing stadium. Critically in the area of list management Lloyd and co have shown that they are prepared to get the job done both for players wanting in as well as those wanting out.and you should! thats exactly what freo should be doing, and not just gold coasts players but the entire comps!
i think freo's strategy of trying to lure back home talent has been excellent and the trades to date that they have done since employing that strategy, have been very good in that regard.
you cant fault it. they've given up very little to get that talent as well. kept their presence in the draft too.
Yeah because players are just lining up to play for ****ing brisbaneThe top few prospects are now worried they might have to play for Freo

Not only that but the drafting has been terrific.
Would be nice to at least win a Derby next year, and several games
Lol! The several wins ranks second to beating West Coast? I'd rather win the flag and lose twice to Cockburn.

We don't had much to give this year for Matera, Weller deal involve pick 41 going to GC way.I actually think the Weller trade is a win for both clubs tbh, though we did do very well out of it.
And I reckon we gave too much for matera, would have rather given something from this year.
Pick 60 would have been great. But pick 42 is about what our 2018 3rd will be - next year we now only have round 1 and 5 picks. We don't had much to give this year for Matera, Weller deal involve pick 41 going to GC way.
The rest of the pick 42,60,66.

Surely you can come up with better than that? I mean, you've already edited your post. Two attempts and that's your best shot?
I think Freo will do two live pick and move one rookie in . The rest rookie list player. You have to draft 3 players, so you can add another pick at around the 90's mark.
Based on this years finish it would be 5, 77 and 93. An interesting strategy.

1) first round pick
2) Academy player
3) -

Yeah I was concerned by this too, but it's not overly hard to get draft picks.
If no one wants out of Freo we could always downgrade our first for a couple of lower picks. Yeah yeah super draft.
In that case we blow our 2019 first for a 2018 2nd and 3rd rounder.
I was initially all about 21, 24, 26 and Matera for Weller but pick 2 is an outstanding result.
This drafting strategy sits in line with Ross Lyons modus operandi.
Elite talent complimented and isolated by solid defensive foot soldiers.
I agree, but I recall you lot doing the same thing in the off-season after conceding a string of derbies.Fair enough. I edited my spelling mistakes, fat fingers. You have to admit it's a pretty small minded attitude though.
