On the upside, if we lose Lake its more than likely Everitt won't be going anywhere.

Everitt, Williams, Roughead, and Boumann.

We're going to see something special from these lads.
Unless we replace him with Scarlett, there is no upside if we lose Lake - he is irreplacable to our structure, and his manager knows it. That's life, but let's all not pretend that any one of the names above will adequately replace the best full back in the competition in the short term. How do you think Hargrave and Morris will enjoy taking the opposition's gorillas every single week next season?

Sorry if someone has already mentioned this, but I still remember Lake's tackle on Nathan Brown the first time they played on oppossing teams. It was a furious tackle, which I feel may have demonstrated Brian's feeling about Browny leaving the club (Could be wrong).

So, it would be more than a little hypocritical of Brian to now consider leaving the club for more money, when his contractual requests have been met.

But there's bugger all left in the salary cap! We're maxed out.

If we find more money for Brian, it will have to come from somewhere & someone will miss out on being re-signed.

Be a shame if we lost someone like Sam Reid because we couldn't fit him in.

TCD, players like Sam Reid would on a very low salary though wouldn't they?

We are really scraping the bottom of the cookie jar if we are going to have to get rid of players who have only been at the club for two years, in order to save on our salary cap.

Isn't there a higher earning player that we could look at before the young guys(who are our future)? I would rather let go one of your senior guys who arn't an integral part of our premiership hopes, than the young guys who have hopefully ten years with us.

I'm under no illusions as to how important he is. But we have to face the fact that he may leave. I just don't think its all doom and gloom. Necessity breeds opportunity.

exactly if you lose lake, forget about 010 all this talk about getting hall when you are going to lose lake.

i thought it was all pretty much settled between you and lake?

i feel so so so sick :( if he goes there goes 010
You are right on the money there - he is the most important player in our team, without him we are gone.

I just hope he takes the Geelong attitude, they had a lot of players who took pay cuts to stay together as a team, and look where that has got them.

If it means sacrificing the bald eagle i think we have to do it for any chance at that premiership that we all long for.

how can he do this to us?
after everything this club has been through, to finally get to this stage, the verge of glory and he's being selfish?
yeah, we don't know the whole story but the fact that we don't is a bit iffy
i think eagleton deserves another year and i don't know how much lake's deal affects him, but he shouldn't suffer just because lake is being ridiculous.

he should take aker's example. here's a guy who's done it all - 3 flags, brownow medal, and he is taking ANY pay cut necessary JUST so his teammates (who he's only played with for three seasons) don't suffer. he's doing it for the club.

and so should lake.

Hey Brian, it's as simple as this.

You stay with us for $1.8 mil over four years and get a genuine shot at winning a flag in the next couple of years or you take your chances and go into the pre-season draft where you'll be picked up by Melbourne - a club that will not make the finals for a good three years.

So what's it to be?

Don't be stupid. Tell your d***head manager to get stuffed and sign the contract. Don't do something you will regret this time next year. Imagine how you will feel seeing all your mates [God, please let it happen] with the premiership cup in 2010?

Seems to me like a press beat up, has SEN been all over it this morning?

If he wan'ts to go then the club should hold firm like SYNDEY did last year with O'KEEFE ------- He stayed after looking a odds on the leave.

Lets not panic just yet.

I hope you guys get it sorted, you looked so good this year and I think it would be a shame to messup your structure.

I would be happy if he came down the highway, but if it is money he is after he wouldn't fit in....as someone else has said there are many teams full of players not getting their market value so to speak.....

He also maybe making the most of the poor draft....poor youngster selection makes an expereinced battle hardened player a more attractive option....

Fingers crossed he makes the right choice as you guys will be looking good for 2010.....I always thought a dogs/cats final would have been much better than the annoying saints....but hey ho....see you next year! :thumbsu:

It's amazing when you think of how good Geelong's list is and how they have managed to keep them all together. They have more elite players than we do, and they still find a way to keep hold of them.

I was listening to an interesting interview with Frank Costa a week or so ago, and he was asked that very thing, how they manage to keep all their players together and not lose any.

He said that Geelong has a major joint partner in the Australian Taxation office. He said that they tell their players "Yep, no problem, go out and chase the big bucks. But remember that for every extra $100,000 you earn, you will be paying $50,000 of that straight to the Taxation Office". He says that it is one disincentive for players to leave for the big pay packet.

I had to laugh at the answer that Costa gave. But I would think that there may be some truth in it. When a player earns an extra $100,000 a year, they are not taking home that $100,000. you have to deduct taxation, medicare levy, agents fees etc etc, all which are levied according to your income level.

Gee that's a lot of posts in a few hours for what is only a rumour at this stage (and the source of those rumours has proven very unreliable from what I gather).

Let's not go sticking the boot into Lake ("selfish", "hypocritical", etc) on the strength of a brand new rumour. A few days ago he was just about everyone's favourite Bulldog! I feel he'll stay but have no evidence to back it up. Just a feeling.

If he does happen to go it won't be the end of the world and may have some surprising upsides (eg what we might get in return, what we can afford to pay for others)

And Jarrad Boumann, this could be your time!

Possible, although more money is stil more money. I think they're more concerned with keeping a champion list together for tilts at a premiereship rather than chasing big bucks. Something we should be striving for at Whitten Oval, Lake be damned if he wants more than we can offer.

At $275k he was clearly under paid in recent years. He may be a little bitter about this. But 4 years at $450k is a fair recompense.

I cannot see how Carlton could afford him under their salary cap with the likes of Fev, and Judd.

If it is another Finals team it would have to be collingwood. They would a premiership is obtainable next year with Lake. Malthouse is in his second last year before Nathan takes the helm, so he will be aggressive over the trade period.

Presti is a good defender but offers little if anything on the rebound. Logically, if it is one of this years finalists it must be Collingwood. It is a clever move because it would significantly improved their chances next year whilst singnificantly depleting a serious contender - us.

The more I think about it, the more I think Collingwood have come in over the top with a $600-$700k offer. Ricky would be chuffed to do a deal for Eddy. I am sure Eddy can help Ricky with his fledgling TV career. Eddy would desperately want a flag after nearly 10 years at the helm.

If it is Collingwood, and they are prepared to pay anything, than Lake's loyalty is being severely tested. He will have enormous expectation to perform if this happens. History shows most of these kind of deals end in tears al a Nathan Brown
