Lake cooling on Bulldogs

yeah, but, lets say lake says he wants a million dollars a year. obviously if he goes to carlton, they give the million the first year then he plays for , say, 333 thousand the next 3 years.

but if another club that he doesnt want to go to picks him in the PSD, he doesnt have to renegotiate.

its all very open to being abused and carlton are just the @#$@ to do it.

PSD contracts are counted for 2 years in the PSD.

He would have to nominate his first 2 years salary. The best they could do would be $1.6M for 2 years then $800K for the next 2.

Come on Brian! SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE! Close to a $2 MILLION DEAL OVER 4 YEARS! Yeah you gotta think about ya family but think about what rocket and the club has done for you, It is called LOYALTY. Chris Grant was offered a 3 year deal for about 1.7 million in 98 and turned it down cause he wanted to play for a club where his mates were and a club who has a massive window at a premiership.
I think he will re-sign because he has stated he loves the club and wants to stay so he just needs to sign in the next couple of days.

Melbourne are paying 92% of their cap, Bailey is in the last year of his contract and needs to start winning games or he will get the sack and they have officially said they will take whatever big fish is available(they were offering Burgoyne $$$$ to slip through to the PSD). He will be a Demon if he goes into the PSD.

Carlton can offer him all the VISY money in the world, but as this isn't included in the salary cap he can't put it on his head in the PSD.

And to be honest i don't think it's Carlton who are after him.

Who do you think are after him?

Lake i think will sign but how ungrateful has he been?? We plucked him from now where and people were surprised when we did not many people had heard of him, we turned him into the player he is today! If he does leave he would only be leaving for the money and he would be the new JUDAS! Lake i hope for ur credabilities sake u sign up because u could quickly head down Nathan Brown's path and this would be worse because we are on the brink of something special!
How can you say how ungrateful has he been plucked him from NOWHERE. come on he must have had some talent he was drafted as a F.F.and a lot of hard work and commitment on his part to get where he is today. I only hope Brian dosnt read some of what so called doggies supporters have written about him on B.F. calling him another Nathan Brown.GEEZ i would want to leave if i thought thats what supporters thought of me. Brian is a club man and LOYAL.Give him a break,he will SIGN.he appreciates the doggies picking him up in the 2001 Draft.Didnt anyone listen to his B@f. speech.

I agree, I hope Brian does not read some of this. To date I have not heard anything negative from Brian's mouth, so let's cut him some slack and wait and see what happens. If he goes then some of the comments made might be warranted but at the moment let's chill out. I got on here after the PF loss and was finding some good therapy reading all the Barry Hall stuff, but now reading some of the Brian L:ake stuff I'm getting depressed again.

We listened to his B&F speech. Actions speak louder than words though and his actions are sorely lacking at the moment.

Carlton and Collingwood

That's what I was thinking as well. Well, it is a process of elimination. Two Melbourne sides who played in finals(according to our good mate Greg Denham). That eliminates eight teams plus Adelaide and Brisbane. You can deduct Essendon from that list, and probably Geelong and St Kilda who have the same salary cap issues as ours. Hawthorn maybe, but they are chasing Burgoyne who is wanting big bucks, so salary cap again. Which leaves Carlton and Collingwood.

It would be amazing if Carlton are chasing Lake though. I know they are losing Stevens, but you still have to wonder about their bottomless pit that is their salary cap. I swear they must have the most uneven salary distribution in the AFL. They are the Brasil of the AFL, with a small percentage of people earning the largest slice of the wealth.

I have been saying this for weeks, there is 0 need for Barry Hall if Brian Lake leaves, we may aswell rebuild if lake goes especially with the upcoming gold coast draft

This may be the case, however we still need to be proactive in getting Baz. You don't put everything on hold while you wait for one player to sign.

The Gold Coast draft doesn't really make too much of a difference to us..

yes it does, if you think they will be worth 1st + 2nd rounders which we can snare cheaply then you are fooled, they still have a LONG way to go.

To me, not the end of the world if we lose him.
He's 27 so only one year of elite footy left in him. After that, should still be good but no better or worse than most full backs in the league. Four years is a long time and a great contract offer for him. At his age, any major injury will mean at best, he will serve out the contract as an average player. At worst, he'll sit on the sidelines chewing up the salary cap.

Key backs are not that hard to find. St Kilda plucked Dawson from the rookie list last year. Gibson, Rutten, Thursfield are also former rookies. Harry Taylor was mature aged when drafted. Apart from Glass, I can't think of any Full backs drafted early. Even Lake himself was a pick 71.

If we can get two picks in the top 20 for Lake, I'd call it break even.

Key backs of his quality are very hard to find. In that list I'll give you Rutten and Taylor but Thursfield played reserves this year, Gibson is a very undersized and Dawson is just not that good. If key backs were easy to find, we'd have more then one good one

They will both be worth 1st and 2nd round picks. Wallis is already being touted as a top 10 pick. 2 bottom aged players who have done very well in the TAC and both have another year to develop.

If the Dogs were rebuilding, then that would be reasonable enough, but that isn't where the dogs are at now. Really, what use use are two good draft picks when you are a flag chance for the next couple of years?

I'd be more than happy for the Hawks first two picks be traded for him, but there is no chance the dogs would accept that.

We all seem to think that we will either re-sign him, trade him or send him into the PSD.

Just checking something made me think there was a 4th option, which could make life interesting in a whole lot of ways.

Last year the AFL approved a number of changes, one of those being as follows:

A player who is not contracted on or before October 31 will now be eligible to nominate for that year's National Draft. This applies immediately from the upcoming 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

Now, lets be honest, Brian Lake is worth a first round draft pick every day of the week. The question is which club would be prepared to use one on him at the expense of a youngster?

Not too sure how it would work with him nominating a figure on his head etc...

AFL approves draft, trading rule changes

Isn't he contracted until the 31st of October.
