By the power vested in me, as the ruler of this Last Man Standing competition, I hereby declare that Grav has been forthwith eliminated from the competition. Said player has tipped Richmond, LOL, and hence has drastically failed in his quest to nominate winners. Grav, we thank you for your participation and congratulate you on your podium finish, however let this public announcement act as formal notification that you are herewith joined unto the esteemed company known as 'the losers pile'. But take heart you do get to sit at the top of the pile.

May this proclamation serve as a warning to the remaining pair, saintkildaman and Verdun66, do not dare to tip without proper care and thought, or there may be more than one coronation this weekend.

And here ladies and gentlemen we have a fine example of a pleonastic statement in the wild.

The word "winner" already implies that the person has won, so stating that "the winner wins" is unnecessary and repetitive. It's similar to saying "the runner runs" or "the singer sings." In each case, the verb is already implied by the noun.

"The winner wins" is descriptively redundant and doesn't add any new information, which kinda sums up George's posting on the whole, really.

saintkildaman you played a tough game, and while you could have chosen Collingwood today, in true Australian spirit you chose the underdog. We are all grateful at this point because it means this competition can finally be brought to a close.

Verdun66 you have been a mighty force through the entire competition, and your footy intelligence has shone through for all to see.

On behalf of the tournament organisers we thank all the participants who have made this competition a resounding success. Without you all it would just be me.

A TOAST TO THE CHAMP

Gather round all, let us celebrate,
The first-ever Last Man Standing, we now validate.
We've laughed and we've cried, we've cheered and we've groaned,
But now Verdun66's victory can't be postponed.

His picks were precise, his knowledge sublime,
He never wavered except that one time.
Despite a twist and a turn, he never faltered,
Instead we reviewed the rules, revised and then altered.

Now as we look back, perchance with a smile,
We feel a little sad, but only for a while.
For though it's over now, and we all move on,
The memories will last forever and then beyond.

So let us praise the winner, Verdun66,
The victor who nailed his picks,
He's proven his worth, he's shown his class,
And we toast the new champ, as we lift our glass.

To all the others who took part in this disgrace,
Thank you for the joy and fun you brought to the place.
You may not have won, but you've all come out stronger,
With life lessons learned, like never tip the goddam Dockers.

So let us all bid adieu to this competition, so grand,
And revel in the joy, that we all understand.
