Coach Lions - Has the Fagan era already peaked?

The Brisbane Lions of 2019-21 feel a lot like Port Adelaide of 2001-03. Mark Williams and the Power were SLAMMED for being chokers back then after three consecutive top four finishes, two prelim appearances and one straight sets elimination. As a top four team in each of those years, Brisbane have actually performed worse than Port did yet somehow how escape the tag of chokers... How?

If Brisbane do end up securing the number one pick in Will Ashcroft this off season then that might be the difference between a wasted premiership window and clinching one before it's too late.
To be fair Port then won it in 2004. (****ing idiot fans ruining momentum)

Super slow team when they let their opposition through the corridor. Not at all surprising, their forward pressure can be great with Bailey, Linc, Cameron but they got to cover for the 3 talls but there Mids and backline while great are slow through transition. Coleman who looks a find and maybe Ah Chee are the only 2 that have pace. Neale, McCluggsge, Berry, Lyons, Mathieson, Robinson, Rich, Zorko, Starcevich, Raymor are all their kid/backline brigade and just can’t keep up with quick ball movement. Not sure on their youth but need to get sone defensive pace

Yeah our speed around the middle especially working defensively leaves a lot to be desired. None of our midfielders are defensively inclined really.

Port were minor Premiers in 2002/2003 and didn't make the GF.

What a load of shit. The hit on Martin was perfectly legal, not a snipe at all.

There wasn't much in the hit on Bailey, but it was more behind the play than the Dusty one.

If you think he "ran scared" for going to the hospital perfectly legitimate health concerns any reasonable person should go to hospital for, what a gross and toxic macho mindset you must have.

Why would Fagan do this? The only way I could see this happening is in Tasmania.

He wouldn't unless Brisbane paid him a ridiculous amount which is just not possible these days with soft cap spending.

I reckon they'll absolutely light up Carlton this week.
Seems like the sort of loss they needed, the Lions remind me of Essendon a bit, really streaky, can beat the pants off anyone when they feel like it.
Player attitude seems to be their big issue.
The problem is we seem to have been having these sort of losses every two weeks for a while now. Nothing much has changed though

Doesn't deserve to be fired. He took the Lions from nothing to where they are now. Big risk to think you can get someone else in to do a better job. Most coaches fail, even legendary coaches like Mick Malthouse going to Carlton didn't work!

Fagan wouldn't stick around to be #2, but a top coach like Clarko with this squad would become a serious flag threat once again. Right now we're not.
I can see Fagan standing in front of the media in a year or two wearing a guernsey with a big map of Tassie on his chest.

It seems very rare for a legendary coach going to another club then working out. I guess Malthouse to Pies worked but query if Mick was legendary at that point. Matthews only became a legendary coach given Lions. Blight to Saints was a disaster. Roos at Melb no good. Just doesnt seem to work very often at all for a successful coach (say two or more flags) to go and have success at another club.

Roos at Melbourne was an indisputable success?

Doubt they'd be where they are now without the Roos intervention.

Paul Roos hasn’t been at Melbourne for 6 years not sure he can take much credit
Yes, but look at where they were at before he went there and where they were at when he left.

They went from a perennial basket case to a team that was ready to push for finals.

He absolutely can take shitloads of credit. They tried almost everything to turn the club's fortunes around, and the beginning of their change in fortunes happened to coincide with Paul Roos being appointed coach - that's not a coincidence.

They remind me of Geelong of the 90's. Ridiculous amount of firepower but not so great defense and poor attitude meant they never quite reached their potential.

Yup, and sadly that's all we know of that Geelong squad. Everyone though they would win at some stage.

I have said this before and will say it again.... If you look back at Brisbane's last few years.....

2018: bottom 4 on thebkadde. 5 wins and 17 defeats. Cold hard win / loss record is sometimes unfair.

They did lose 4 or 5 games by 2 goals or less. Should of got 7-8 wins. Still would of been bottom 6.

2019: top 2. Was tight at the near top. Richmond got top 4 and double chance with 7 wins in a row at the MCG. Brisbane went out in straight sets.

2020 : top 2 or 4 again. Won a final but lost a preliminary final. Inexperience cost Brisbane.

2021: 4th by percentage. Got out losing 2 home finals in a row again.

I sort of wished Brisbane finished 5th last season. Dead certain they would of beaten a limping and wounded 8th placed Essendon outfit by 30-40 points the. Lose in the semi finals.

In a way, I sort of wish Freo finished 5th or 6th this season and get a home final rather than get 4th and lose 2 finals like Freo did in 2014.

Well given the fine wasn’t for that incident which in your words sent him to hospital aren’t you classy ………..so grow up
