34 games in 4 years, many of those were incredibly poor. Not a world beater by any means. Would have been delisted so to get anything is a win.

Setters is on page 2 btw. Granted he played a dozen odd senior games....

But if he is behind those players you mentioned (Cripps is in that boat as well) and won't ever leapfrog them, why would he want to stay? To help us with our depth? It's not the clubs choice for him to leave, I am sure they would have loved for him to be a rookie or sign a small deal. He was uncontracted so he had to make a call on what was best for his footy and Carlton has no choice but to offload him. You certainly can't overpay a player for being a depth piece too, so throwing more money or years at him would be irresponsible.
If we trade Dow out, who is contracted, then that speaks more to the questions as to why we would let him go as we need depth.
Anyway, it's a great problem to have! Remember when Josh Kennedy left the Hawks? Well if he didn't, he would have continued his depth player journey and wouldn't have become what he did. No one should blame the Hawks for letting him go because he was never going to get the same opportunities he had at Syd, at the Hawks.
Same deal with Setters. It's just a shame its Ess!

I think my overall frustration with this trade is because of what we saw at the the end of the year. He’s clearly an inside mid and we persisted with him on a wing for so long!
Does he play inside ahead of Cripps, Hewett or Kennedy? What about a balanced inside/outside role ahead of Walsh & Cerra?

If Carlton has any sort of luck with the midfield Fitness then setterfield is very much excess to needs and very replaceable...... He always showed promise but never put it together consistently and his demeanour was never aggressive enough

Agree wholeheartedly re; depth.
The problem with depth though, is when your out of contract, and another club comes knocking and sells 'the story' more often than not that player moves on.
Would have loved to keep Setters, but in the end Setters wanted to move and understandably so.

That happens when the other club has a spot for you in your preferred position.
Keeping Setters as depth for wing and occasionally inside mid would have been as pointless for next year as it was this year. More so as Carroll is another year older and plays a similar role and Acres takes 1 wing.
His trade value is nil as we played him in a way which suggests we don't rate him either.

The only thing worse then giving away Setterfield so cheaply would’ve been offering him a deal which would’ve made him stay.
Below average in almost every meaningful statistic.
Played probably one decent game in 4 years.
No run & carry, no kicking penetration, no aerial ability, no scoreboard pressure, no take-the-game-on attitude, not enough smarts to be an effective inside mid.
He's a VFL quality player that has zero impact at AFL level.
There is absolutely no reason to be frustrated here at all. Austin has done the right thing here. Offered Will a minimum contract and said take it or leave it.
Makes sense that we're clearing mid age depth to go to the draft, now that we have a football identity and proper development setup - just need to get the picks right

Please update me - is Dow completely out the door or does trading Setters make it more likely he stays?

More likely he stays - the fairly consistent talk was that both were on the trade table but only one of them would actually be traded and we'd keep the other.
Probably worked out as the club would have preferred tbh with Dow being contracted for another 12 months and Setters OOC, meaning they don't need to work out a deal with a player that may be miffed about being told to look around only to try and sign up after they weren't wanted anywhere.

My feeling is it increases his chances of staying, but I'm only guessing.
One thing I liked about SOS' list management strategy at GWS was his willingness to ensure the list was continually bringing in KP Players.
Granted, no-one would have expected the extent of the revolving door that occurred with that club, but it leaves me thinking we should be concerned about our depth in this area. At times this year we had only 1 x healthy tall defender, 1 x healthy tall forward or 1 x healthy ruckman on the entire list.
After de-listings, we currently stand at:
KD Starters: Weitering, Young
KD Depth: Durdin, Akuei
We are probably one short here in the short term, given Akuei is very raw and may prove to be more useful as a Med defender or backup ruck.
Medium D Starters: McGovern, Marchbank
Medium D Depth: Plowman, Kemp (?)
McGov and Marchbank injury history a concern. Kemp unproven in this position and Plowman should not be seen as anything more than a break-glass option.
Ruck Starters: Pittonet, DeKoning
Ruck Depth: Mirkov
None of these guys are A Graders yet. Rucks also take a long time to come on, but hold value on the trade market.
Would be wise to bring in an 18yo to develop long term.
Would leave us with an 18yo, 2 x 23 yo, 26yo. That's a good spread.
KF Starters: McKay, Curnow
KF Depth: Nil.
This is an obvious need. These boys are 25 now... both coleman medalists and entering their prime. Time for them to mentor some young guys.
Medium F Starters: Silvagni, Martin
Medium F Depth: Honey (?), Kemp (?)
Another obvious need. I like what Silvagni and Martin bring. Unfortunately Jack has been sacrificed to the ruck and Martin is on and off the park. Would hope to see them settled forward and prey for a full season out of them.
Personally - based of what I've seen the past few years - I would make the below positional decisions immediately and stick to them.
Recruitment needs over next 2 years:

Similar thinking to the above, I'd like to see us get a little more cover with a bit of height. I actually wouldn't have minded us asking questions of Tomlinson - especially if Marchbank's body doesn't hold together.
Whats wrong with S Durdin? Stood up as best as anyone could off of less than 2 weeks in our system when weits and young went down. Lets give the guy a chance. Sure draft a young kpd but our need for a ready made certainly isnt dyer

Nothing is wrong with him. However, it'd be really nice to have another young KPD developing behind him in the VFL.
Dare I suggest that with his experience of being a highly rated younger player who was delisted and had to fight his way back Durdin might be a good player for a developing KP to learn from?
