This draft is pretty "meh" to me.
I think we need to be aiming for next year, so I'd trade out of this year on draft night.
Something like pick 10, F2 with any team we rate finishing bottom 4 F1 F3 and really go hard at landing Reid next year.
Probably have to seek permission from the AFL to make it happen, no harm in asking.
Won't get Reid, but might get say, Moir, who would suit us nicely. Whoever has pick 1 next year won't be trading it.

The problem as I see it with our forward line is that we have Fisher, Durdin and Motlop as very small, very quick pressure forwards. But I think in Voss's ideal world he'd probably like another 2 the same. Voss's game plan is lots of long balls down to the talls with either a mark to Charlie/Harry or bring it to ground and then pressure it out of bounds or cause a repeat entry.

Instead we sort of shoe-horn TDK, SOS, Martin, etc. in there who are good but not exactly what the system requires.

I think Voss ideal setup would be Motlop, Durdin, 2 X Tom Papleys and Charlie+Harry with Fisher floating in and out.

I think there is real value in this draft, that definitely suits our needs.

Hawks haven’t cut deep for fun. Harley Reid will be their first pick next year. No chance they trade it.

It depends on what is perceived as a suits our needs.
Imo we need a DeGoey and a McCreery type acquisition, and I don't see anything resembling requirement in this draft, at least not at our pick anyway.
In my scenario we could end up with pick 18 but it also could be pick 1 imagine that. The best time to strike these kinds of deals is on draft night.
Austin has proven he can find talent later on in the draft, I would not lose any sleep if this scenario took place.

Not sure we need a small forward. I'd prefer a medium who can make things happen. Someone like Zak Bailey.

Think we already have both on the list already.

AFL.com website has every teams best 22 after the trade period.
Have a look at ours and you’ll see our small/medium forwards rates as one of the worst in the league.
It’s our biggest weakness by some distance IMO.

Durdin and Motlop are kids, but they're going to be good players.
Not sure how getting another kid in surpasses them?

If we bring in Humphrey - for example - they would all be playing in round 1.

Teams are adapting to having a rotation of 3-4 smalls who create goals but also put on a lot of pressure in the front half.

This is why we’re angling to find another half forward who can work in with our current rotation to compliment the guys we’ve got already. We’d love Martin to be able to play that role, but he’s continued to struggle with injury. Honey is still a maybe, Cunningham is constantly injured, Fogarty is too slow. Owies should be depth.

We really lack class in attack and need at least one more player who can put on pressure and create opportunities for our deeper forwards. Whether that means taking a high upside specialist small forward or drafting in a midfielder with the capability to play there for a few seasons is probably what we’re weighing up.

I only read "small" and missed the "/medium" in the post I quoted, think I misread due to their quoted post of saying we need a medium Zak Bailey type.

A quick half forward is exactly what we need.

Aside from H Reid atm as hes easily the #1 but there is some very strong talent in the 2023 draft pool that runs very deep. The top 20 is super talented, hence why so many teams are trying to load up on next yrs draft.

I think Owies and Fisher are depth players, not best 22 small forwards.
Drafting a fast small/medium player that can also take a strong mark would be nice.
Fisher kicked 18 goals last season. He clearly has the ability to finish, but he’s too slow to put on pressure and cause chaos in the front half.

He’s also too small and doesn’t have the tank to play as a permanent midfielder. At least someone like Cottrell can get back deep to help on transition and has the ability to win one-on-ones with his relative strength and long arms.

Honesty have no idea what we’re going to do with Fisher. He has some really good traits. Beautiful kick, fast hands, lethal shot at goal and has enough tricks to get himself out of trouble but he has quite a few deficiencies we’ve either got to cover and work through - and we’ve got to find a position for him. Acres coming in and possibly adding another option on half forward could make it more difficult for him.

Fisher is a high half-forward.
It's perhaps the hardest position to play well, and his numbers this year were only just below the very best in the League. Hopefully he'll improve even more this year, but he'll be helped immensely if we can get another (hopefully even quicker, bigger, more powerful) player in to help out in a similar role. We need Cunners/Honey/new player helping out.

100% spot on.

Cuningham
Martin
Motlop
SOJ
Fisher
Durdin
Honey
Owies
Kemp(?)

That is 8 players vying for 4 spots given Charlie and Harry are certain starters when fit- and I would say that Kemp and TDK are also options for a third tall spot ( TDK as a ruck rotation).

The problem with all the blokes above is that none of them has been really tried on a flank - which limits their effectiveness - Martin and Cuningham would have some credibility as mid rotations if they could stay on the park - none of the others including Fisher are likely to be called on for serious midfield time.

LSS - not a lot of flexibility amongst this lot - I don't want to see SOJ pretending to be a ruck again. Nor do we need Walsh to pretend to be a HFF running back and forward.

Carlton midfield wins a lot of ball - the limitations of the link/transition between flanks and forwards makes the forward fifty entries too predictable and easily covered. Fix this and Carlton is a genuine top4 contender and should start winning games by big margins- don't fix this and most games will be a grind with too much reliance on players like Cripps / Harry / Charlie - who are always going to be double-teamed.

Acres may improve one flank - but I still see Carlton being 'short' 2 HFFers and a wing who are genuinely dangerous - unless Cuningham can stay on the park and Martin starts to hit decent repeat form ( fingers crossed on both).

Yep nothing wrong with Durdin and Motlop - indeed IMO they are the two most likely to succeed - it’s the others that I worry about.
- Owies is honest but unless he takes a huge jump he is not much more than good depth if we are to be a good team.
- Sos needs to play permanent half forward - forget about playing him as a relief ruckman - he should be able to average a goal a game.
- Martin is almost in the same category as Gov, Marchy and Cunners in term of being injury prone which is a shame coz he has the talent to average at least a goal a game but if he can’t play at least 75% of the season in 2023 we should be looking to move him on
- Fisher had a good year and plays the high role so less likely to hit the scoreboard but I seriously doubt he can be elite in his role - he has been in the league a while now and he is only slightly above average IMO - so he must improve again next year for us to get better. If only Cunners could stay fit I reckon he could be more effective in that role as he has more weapons than Fisher.
- Honey needs a very big year to stay on the list - personally I see someone with a lot of physical gift but no actual football nous - hopefully I’m wrong.

I think Owies and Fisher are depth players, not best 22 small forwards.
Drafting a fast small/medium player that can also take a strong mark would be nice.

Fisher is nowhere near depth Weirdo, he’s in elite categories for quite a few stats.

Agree on Owies though, gives his all which is what you want, just lacks leg speed to be really damaging

Interesting to see the AFL.com best 22 article(written by staff writers) with both Owies and Fish in our best 18??
I have a feeling that Voss is a bit fond of these two, but I'm not so sure we can rely on them to contribute much in our 2023 finals campaigne.

The disrespect towards Fisher on here is remarkable.

Easily had a career best year and there's no reason why he can't improve further.

Clearly in our best side.
1. Patrick Cripps - 181 votes
2. Sam Docherty - 173
3. Sam Walsh - 163
4. Charlie Curnow - 149
5. George Hewett - 125
6. Adam Saad - 124
7. Harry McKay - 123
8. Zac Fisher - 117

Needs to lift...
