If we weren’t going to offer Stocker a new contract there’s no value in “keeping him round” until trade period.

Very much doubt Stock and his manager would play along with the “trade period” line anyway, knowing there’s no pending Carlton contract and he’d be delisted anyway after trade period. He’s not going to give the club any favours - Stock would be trying to get to another club ASAP, a trade scenario would just make that more difficult.

I don't disagree with any of that but he had a point in that we have trusted the club before and it hasn't planned out (so many s**t coaches for example) so if some don't want to trust these decisions then they have every right.

Stocker is no big loss for me, I would have kept him looking from outside in but I'm ok with their decision.

What choice do you have other than to trust the club?

Start a revolution?

doesnt mean people cant complain and have doubts on the clubs decision making - im not complaining but was just saying its fair enough if people dont agree with the club and have doubts on the way we do things - history will show if they are right to be concerned.

You say most footballers can reach 32km/h yet 32km/h puts you in the top two or three afield every single week. Most players in the competition don't ever hit 32km/h or faster.

LOB consistently hits high speed, he was a state level 800m/1500m runner which are VERY transferrable to AFL level. He has great acceleration.

Stock, JSOS and Setters are not slow at all
. They are factually within our top 10 quickest players for the year. How many of Jacks goals were scored from him sprinting back inside 50 and smashing his opponent so badly that he takes an uncontested mark? No statistic for that of course but he done that on multiple occasions. How many Joe The Gooses did Cotters score like this too?

You know who are slow? Walsh, Cripps, Hewett, Kennedy, Cerra, Pittonet and TDK. Perhaps Setters and Docherty - going on-ball late in the piece for us was due to the fact that they do add a point of difference to our majority one-paced midfield? Perhaps JSOS as a mobile ruckman works because he is quick?
Where did I say that?

No he doesn't. Why do you think he was a middle distance runner and not a sprinter? At the combine there is a reason they measure the first 20 metres and not from 20m to 40m for example. It is a weakness of Lob's that he can't accelerate out of trouble and is forced to hack it forward too often.

I think they are. Maybe it's just my eyes that are slow.

Ah yes, the numbers game. I always forget how important possessions are, especially when you’re playing in your preferred position!

I tell you what, this fitness/speed discussion is here to stay especially now that Stocker has been let go, even though he brings something our other ‘slow’ mids don’t bring, the HURT factor…

So, if Kennedy, Hewett and Cripps play in the same midfield next season, we will not finish in the top 4…
Cerra Kennedy and Hewett are considerably better runners. They are also considerably better performers.

Adding some pace to our team would do us a world of good and allow us to have a better ability to defend vs the quicker and nimbler sides such as Collingwood, Richmond and Brisbane.

It's no coincidence that we tend to match up well vs Melbourne Freo and Sydney, they have the slowest midfields of the top 8.

Either way Stocker was not getting a game ahead of Cripps, Hewett, Cerra, Kennedy or Walsh and he also wasn't getting a game ahead of Saad Williams Docherty or Boyd. For those reasons as well as a clear lack of application to be the best player he could be, he's gone.

Then you trade with North?

Why would North need to do that?

He's out of contract & they have pick #1 in the PSD, don't they?

It sounds like he wanted a 3-year deal with us, otherwise North have committed to him. We as a club, had the option to play funny-bugger with North and try to get a pick in the 50s for him lasting all the way through trade period, or do the right thing and let him get to North ASAP via a DFA. Considering his mental health demons it sounds like we may have put him first - as we should.

I see the calls as being fair as he will never be 'best 22', but sheesh, we need depth. Players like Stocker are handy depth for a contending club. But you also don't sign depth to a 3-year deal. Tough decision all round.

Not much you can do if he refuses to sign what's put in front of him. I reckon they've offered him a year and he said: "No, I've got a better offer."

Probably right, Which is fine! we did the same to clubs when we had room to move.

His list position in our list is base contract worthy.

So, where we are at now:

Senior List: 32
Rookie List: 5
Rookie B: 2 (including Owies, who cannot stay on Rookie B list)
32+5+Owies=38, max=42. So 4 places now free, along with one free spot on the Rookie B list.

Waiting new contracts:
Senior List: Marchbank, Setterfield, Honey, Cuningham, Fogarty, Ed Curnow (6)
Rookie List: S Durdin, Cottrell (2)
Rookie B: Owies, Akuei (2)

Some discussion a few weeks back that new contracts were imminent for Cotts, LOB & Boyd, but haven't seen confirmation.

May hold off on further changes till trade period now.

Edit: Removed LOB & Boyd from "waiting new contracts"
Updated.

I think losing Jones really hurt Stocker.

2021 Stocker had a pretty good year and was locking down a spot. He talked about how good of a support Jones had been both on field and also as a mentor off the field.

Maybe if we had Jones to keep taking Stocker under his wing things could have been different

I think your middle point is the answer for all of them.

Sprint speed over 60m is one thing but they're all slow where it matters, the first 5-10 metres. Agility and pace in a short area is far more important than top speed and that's where they all fall short. No one has ever confused Stocker, Setterfield or SOS for pacey athletes.

I guess someone has been playing around with Carlton's Wikipedia page.. apparently Blake Acres is part of our squad already?

We can rant and rave all we want. All it does I get our own blood pressure up.

Club's going to be do what it think is best.

I'd be more concerned if the club bent to popular sentiment when making decisions.

Stock would have missed too much footy to attend the weekly protests on Saturdays.

In fairness, you didn't say that directly - you just said that most players could achieve a respectable speed (paraphrasing here) over a distance.

And I think they're quick and maybe it's just me misinterpreting the stats and my eyes supporting a different argument than yours do. Each to their own and all that good stuff.

Either way, I look forward to seeing what positive list changes come off the back of some of these delistings.

Sam Edmunds apparently about to provide a Stocker update on sen

Nothing we haven't already heard. Doesn't have the running capacity to be an afl level midfielder. Running capacity also hurts our ability to spread out of defence compared to other guys we have down there. Ball use good at VFL level but questionable under AFL level pressure. Just not good enough was his summary. Alludes to the fact he has made some calls but doesn't specifically say whether the above is his opinion or from the club.
