Crawf was heart and soul, Hawthorn. He wasn't traded in, so it's a different scenario in many minds.
Yep. Long-term captain of the club and champion of the game, so not comparable at all.

I would think at present the following would be in real danger of being delisted subject to their contract status: Hartigan, Downie, Saunders, Phillips, Howe. Can't see a long-term future for any of them.

The following should be considering retirement: McEvoy, Shiels

Callow/Jeka should get another year.

Each of Mitchell, O'Meara, Wingard, Worpel should be considered for trade but given the lack of interest 12 months ago, I don't see things being any different, unless we are willing to take significantly less. I expect the first three to stay. If Worpel can't break back into the side and perform in the back half of the season, I think he will ask to move on, and we won't get much for him.

We don't have much to trade with. Our aim should be to find value players elsewhere.

At the end of the day we need far more talent on our list to be a genuine flag contender and our standard picks won’t do it (unless we are incredibly lucky).

If we get offered 2nd rounders for 1-2 of worpel, Mitchell, JOM, Gunston etc (and they want to move) we take them. Maybe also a pick for Brockman etc. Back McKenzie to find the talent we need and Mitchell & co to develop them. We realistically have a few years rebuild ahead of us.

Maybe that means we keep shiels/Howe/Phillips around for a little longer to keep some experience around the club and depth. But that’s fine if it’s part of the strategy to get us back to the top.

Jack Crisp has been a wonderful example of what can happen. A fine young man who has worked at his game, relied on his skill, worked at his hardness, consistentancy, and leadership.

Well done Jack.

Would love him at Hawthorn. Was a gun HBF and has made the transition to becoming a gun midfielder seamlessly.

There was some interest last year, but only the Giants really put their hand up.

Other clubs were negated by the salary cap squeeze which meant they couldn’t entertain any additions to the list for players of that ilk. That is said to be in hand for many clubs now.

The other thing that played out was that clubs were anxious about 2022 being another year lost to Covid for junior development, meaning that they thought there was a big chance that the 2022 draft class may have not been sighted at under 16 or under 18 level due to Covid shutdowns, which lead to really not wanting to trade out of the 2021 draft.

Clubs will definitely ask the question of JOM and Tom, when you see players like McStay, Amon and Langford getting 4-5 yr deals directed at them.

Jaeger's partner lives in WA doesn't she? Maybe he played so well on the weekend because he felt comfortable being back there for a little period over the bye now.

I'd love to keep Jaeger as he's had a good year to be honest, and he'd probably be high in the BnF.

Worpel for a 2nd would be nice and the move. But Worpel is good when Tom isn't there, so do we try to keep one of them?
Wingers to me is the best expendable as he is a 'cream' kind of player, but that doesn't seem to be on the cards at all.

Question, were people on here keen to move Crawf on 06,07? Saying that he won't be part of the next premiership? Always find that an interesting comment.

Silly me. I thought the point was ‘who knows how soon our next flag will be’

Were posters keen to move Crawf on in 06/07 as he wouldn’t be in our next flag team
BANG 08

Some poster earlier predicting ‘28 before we are a chance.
There’s only 1 team that far away…..it ain’t us

They may well have been posters who were keen for more draft picks around that time, and who possibly thought that Crawford would not be in our next premiership side but he was Hawthorn royalty to many, so the consideration of trading him wouldn’t have been tabled I’d suggest.

For Tom and JOM it’s quite different.

I never once considered we should trade Crawf, you are right, he is HFC royalty.

I’m also an optimist when it comes to HFC, I bought flights to Melb in March ‘08 for GF weekend, knowing I had a ticket to the game when we made it

Agree 100%.

My gut tells me most of the names mentioned will finish their careers as Hawthorn players. If they were to be traded, 2021 was the year. No takers. So why would there be now, and if so, why would we take a worse offer - which it would be.

We're better off holding and having them help guide the younger players. We're simply not going to get the value we want.
2021 was a hard year to trade anyone due to covid salary caps reduced.

I think you will find more players will move in 2022/23 as all the AFl cap starts to return to normal.

A premiership contender will come asking about Wingard / O'Meara and Mitchell could very well be there missing peice.

What we want and what we get can often be two very different things. Just ask Jordan Lewis and he would of deserved the captains role.

Only if uncontracted.
The player has a big say otherwise.

I think both Jeka and Callow get another year. KP players generally take a little extra time to develop and both have shown signs. Jeka has the attributes but needs a bit more size and Callow seems to have no issues finding the ball and can clunk them but lacks core strength currently for AFL.

Mitchell Lewis is starting to look like a great player, finally, but he has a poor history of staying on the park. Fairly injury prone to date. Important to have big guy depth.

It will be interesting if we have a few players nominating or wanting to get to us at years end, reckon we are a year early but if your a midfielder looking for a starting role we would surely be front of mind.

With how poor melbournes forwardline is going I could see them having a real interest in Breust and gunston. Proven goal kickers with genuine forwardline smarts and ability to make something from nothing are very rare. Would be good to have a crack while they’re in their premiership window

Bruest yes but I think they would consider Gunston to be an older version of Fritsch.

We probably need to keep one of them to have some leadership in the forward line.

If I was a Melbourne fan, I would love to have wingard in forward pocket with kosi and Fritsch. Opposition will find hard matchups.

1st pick = best mid.
2nd rounder + some change for a Bruhn/insert talented GC/GWS mid that can't get a game
Karl Amon FA.

Changes up our midfield balance overnight.

Bruhn was a top 10 pick. They'd want 2 firsts.
Bruhn was pick 12 and probably doesn't play with Hopper and Taranto in the side

Callaghan, Hopper, Taranto, Greene, Kelly, Coniglio > Bruhn

You simply can;t ask for a high first round pick let alone bloody two first round picks when said player is the 7-9th best midfielder in the team.
