List Management - So Who Goes?

While we're talking up possible trades and acquisitions in other threads, I think it's not a bad idea to have a think about the other side of the equation. For every player that comes in, another has to leave.

Looking through our rookie list there's not a single player I'd like to let go of. Cachia, Casboult, Dare, Donaldson and Touhy all look like they have something, and the promoted rookies Ellard and White haven't put a foot wrong.

That leaves the senior list. Three must go, to make room for the mandatory 3 national draftees. The way I see it, this is the queue for the exit:

Wiggins (retires)
Fisher (not the answer. Shame about the century.)
Tiller (young but making no impression)
Anderson (courageous and hard working, but that's it)
Browne (application and skills not quite AFL)
O'Keefe (always injured)
Johnson (The MC's mind may already be made up)

That doesn't mean I want them all gone, just my pecking order.

Thoughts?

I would think that Wiggins, Fisher and Tiller will be the first to go. I think Johnosn might get another season as he's been good in the VFL and taking steps in the right direction and the same might go for Anderson. I think Browne might get one crack at making it as a midfielder. O'keeffe might get another go but it's looking less likely.

I thInk you will Find that we will take the minimum pics allocated at the draft this season. I would say wiggo fisher tiller Browne will all be sent packing. Tbird will be traded walker too. Sauce will be kept as I believe he and 206 will be the best ruck duo in the afl next year (better than cox and nicknat). Okeefe and Aussie will get another yr as both are needed players that have attributes none of our other team members have. Eg Okeefe has a booming left foot. Ellard should get upgraded and I would have the nominated rookie as Simon white.
Any ways there's my spin on things. Ps please let Matthew Watson slip to us

Simon Wiggins and Brad Fisher would be the only certainties at the moment. Steven Browne and Caleb Tiller would be close, and I'd think we'd seek trades for Bret Thornton and Setanta O'hAilpin.

We will need more than 3 players going out, be it by retirement, delisting or trade, because both Ellard and Garlett have come to the end of their rookie contracts and will of course be upgraded rather than delisted.

Ultimately, I think Wiggins, Fisher, Tiller and O'Keeffe will go, along with Walker by trade, plus Anderson, Setanta and Johnson to be under threat if we trade any players in to the club

Given that we need to have at least 3 selections at the ND, this is what I think might happen:

Wiggins - Retires/Delisted
Fisher - Delisted
C.Johnson - Delisted
Anderson - Delisted/Traded
Browne - Delisted/Traded

Jacobs/Walker/Thornton - will be traded

Upgrade Garlett and Ellard onto the senior list.

Tiller was taken as a bottom aged player, and could have still played U18 footy the year after he was drafted. I'd hang onto him for one more year.

Those advocating the delisting of Tiller and/or ROK - 1 question:

Have you ever seen either of them play?

I thought not. IMHO, too early to make the call. Both are, give or take a few months, the same age as Chris Yarran. Yarran's a top 10 pick who still hasn't quite cemented a place in our team.

Anyway...

  1. Wiggins. Hopefully he'll still appear with Jamo's Junk. :D
  2. Fisher. Time is up.
  3. Anderson. Surpassed by first year players in Lucas and Davies. Next.
  4. Johnson. A gamble that didn't pay off. See Anderson.
I'd be disappointed if we delisted Browne but hardly surprised. 2008 was great. Seems to have become slower since debut but maybe needs 1 more preseason. Parallels with another WA youngster mentioned this week in Blackwell. For him to stay on the list there are the trades:

  • Walker & Jacobs. As discussed.
  • Thornton. 3rd-4th rounder, if Ratts ain't gonna play him, let's not pay him $250K a year to play for the Bullants.
I'm in the camp of preferring picks to washed-up 'fill a need' players & no one over 23.

2 upgrades, 4 ND picks, 1 PSD pick.

No we don't as rookie upgrades are included.

The easy one is:

The Blue Wiggle - Retirement - Shame we couldn't give him a send off game
* Do you think if we promote Teague to an assistant then Wiggo can be our next Development Coach?

So who does that leave in the spotlight?

Johnson, Fisher, Hadley, Browne, Austin, Anderson, Tiller, ROK

and yet to sign?

Jacobs, Grigg, Ellard, <insert those I've missed>

We'll promote?
Ellard, Garlett (already signed up)

On the trade table?
Jacobs, Walker, Thornton, Irish

We're left with?
One mandatory pick/promotion in the Draft

Maybe we'll surprise and not delist too many, especially if we trade 2+

My order for delisting is:

1. Fisher - shame, as I think he is good depth. .. hope he finds another club
2. Anderson - I like him but he is struggling to take that step
3. Austin - Some may be shocked but I just struggle to see him taking that step we need
4. Hadley - I think he'll play another year, as he is serviceable if McLean doesn't get fit but if Grigga signs and we promote Ellard maybe we don't need him

ROK and Tiller should get another chance to go, can we rookie list ROK?

Browne and Johnson deserve one more year as they are adapting and I can see one of them coming good

As for the Rookies, they seem safe as we'll have to replace Jeffey and Davey. .. Joshua Donaldson is the only one I have a query about haven't heard anything but he seems a good size. .. Could he be a KPP backup?

I have a feeling that we may only need to make one or two delistings.

Retired - Simon Wiggins
Delisted - Brad Fisher -- Caleb Tiller or Rhys O'Keeffe (expecting the one to go to be rookied)

Potentially likely trades

To Adelaide: Andrew Walker for Shaun McKernan
To Fremantle: third round pick for Chris Tarrant
To Somewhere: Bret Thornton for a pick (that we may or may not even use; it's a salary dump if we get Tarrant)

Likely Draft: pick #18 + Jeff Garlett + David Ellard

Total IN: (Garlett), (Ellard), Chris Tarrant, Shaun McKernan, pick #18
Total OUT: Walker, Thornton, Wiggins, Fisher, Tiller/O'Keeffe

Outside of that the questions to be answered are;

Does WH see anyone in the second round worth more than the other O'Keeffe/Tiller or anybody else on our list? If so, they go and we use our second pick. If not, then we add our first rounder and the two upgrades come the ND.

Does anybody offer us a deal over the odds? For example, do Gold Coast come running for Shaun Hampson and offer us something crazy? Does another team make a crazy offer for Sam Jacobs?

Do we have any interest in anybody else? For example, what are we willing to offer up to get a Mundy or a Jared Brennan to Carlton?

As much as I think we'll be players during trade period I also predict a fairly quiet off-season for us. Don't be too disappointed - it simply means that;

A) No one was willing to go over the odds for a player on our list comparable to how we value them (eg. Sauce is a required player)

B) We didn't find anyone we wanted at a suitable price (eg. Brennan)

C) The club is relatively content with the current list and feel that it can develop further (especially if the Walker trade nets us a KP prospect and we draft one at #18)

The good news? You can make a case for almost every player on our list as far as delistings are concerned? When was the last time we were able to say that?

The decisions are getting tougher. Everyone agrees on Wiggins and Fisher, but after that it gets vague. In a year or two many of us will be wailing at some of the delistings that will happen.

Anderson is an easy decision I feel, so is Johnson and Irish

Anderson > Browne by a country mile.

Irish is a must have keeper until we get another KPF on our team for depth. Yes, he'll go but not this year.

Johnson played a couple of very nice games this season for us. I like him as a depth player on our list. Every club needs those players who are between 23 and 30 who can come in and occasionally give a great effort. He's one of those. I'd compare the role I'm speaking of to our mid-1990s teams but you'd be right in countering that they were much better players.

It's a position that you don't often see much of anymore but used to be vital to a successful club and can be today if you have good list management.

Really difficult to say what we will be doing with delistings and I feel that they will be largely dictated by what happens during trade week, but at this stage, this is what I'd be doing if I was managing the list:

Delist - Wiggins, Fisher, Tiller, ROK
Elevate - Garlett, Ellard
Re-Rookie - ROK and possibly Tiller

I don't think we need to make many more, if any more changes than that. I think the likes of Anderson and Johnson will get another year on the list because they are decent depth.

Browne may be put on the trade table as the steak knives in a deal, but if he stays I'd keep him for another season as well.

If Walker,Thornton and Jacobs leave, we won't delist Wiggins, Fisher, Tiller and ROK to make seven changes to our list.

I don't see us using that many draft picks.

I'd like to keep O'keeffe for another year.

Ellard will be elevated, but we're just shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic with this decision. I don't see the benefit in keeping a poor man's Bentick because he's the coach's favourite. Ellard lacks JR's upside who was Ratten's project three seasons ago. Doubt that another club would look at Ellard if he was cut.

Delist: Wiggins Fisher Tiller Anderson (depending on trade week)
Elevate: Garlett Ellard
Trade: Jacobs Thorton Walker
Re-rookie: Tiller

Delist: Wiggins, Fisher, Johnson, Browne
Elevate: Garlett, Ellard
Trade: Thornton (draft pick/draft pick upgrade), Jacobs (player)

Leaves three picks for the ND.

Haven't seen Tiller so I can't comment on him. Anderson is a better player than Browne imho, and is a handy backup. Probably hasn't been given the opportunity he deserves.

I completely agree with you. I'm not a big time Browne basher by any means but Anderson is a supremely better player than is Browne. Anderson's problem and why he hasn't gained a permanent position in the 22 is that he lacks composure.

Hopefully with another year under his belt he can gain a bit more of the maturity necessary to gain that composure on the senior level. It's fairly obvious that the MC have semi-high hopes on the lad otherwise he wouldn't be in and out of the side and listed as an emergency as often as he has.

Anderson has all of the physical tools. It's just the mental side of the game.
