It's not only the hitouts, it's the follow up work. English looking for a handball recieve v a ruck who will block space for opposing mids and love the contested stuff. Lobb was great with his follow up last night

When English is on, things are great but it's happening way too often that players with half his ability can throw him off his game just through a physical presence

Yeah there was one play that I noticed where the ball got fed to Libba who was out the back and English was in front of him, two Geelong players pressured Libba and forced a turnover because English had already moved into position for the next link in the chain instead of attempting to lay a block. Since Sweet isn't super mobile, he's always good at getting those blocks in because it's probably the most valuable usage of him post hitout.

Well done to Lobb. Dropping him to the VFL was the best move for him, has come back with a lot more intensity. I wish we dropped a few others throughout the season.

Not convinced West will make it as a full time mid, but glad we are actually tried a few different things.
DFA to Clay Smith to West - we need a hard arse contested forward.
If he takes the occasional CBA, great. I still don't think he positions himself well at times but that's teachable, and his attack on the footy is something you can't teach. It's innate.

Funny that English represents many of our players, hot at times and stone cold rubbish at others. It’s the dogs biggest issue- you can’t be that inconsistent as many are individually and the the team is. It’s not even week to week, it’s quarter to quarter!

English is high value for his skill set, Bevo needs to mix it up like he did yesterday when it’s not working in the centre.

Thought west, o,donnell, crozier all did okay. Not sure why Croz has not played all year- we need more desperate players like he is.

On the other hand Jackson turned the game in the GF without blocking or winning hitouts but focusing on clearances and linking up instead. Either way can work, and when it comes off it looks like the right decision.

Keep in mind that English has carried a massive load all season. He hasn’t missed a game and plays 85% of the game as a pure ruck.

Lobb has taken some pressure off but he hasn’t been utilised in the ruck anywhere near as much as he should have been. Last night proved that it should be a 60/40 split with Tim spending 5-7 minutes a quarter up forward.

English has been a little down the past few weeks but I’m hoping it’s just exhaustion kicking in after a long year.

good to win there no matter how. Richards is a stud

English's first half was appalling. Another late season drop off, whats that? 7 years in a row
English needs to be a 50 / 50 Ruck as being that 80% ruck wears him down by season's end. And he is pretty effective resting forward. Club needs to take a firm hand and tell him this is what is best for you and the club

It could be his fatal flaw as a player we commit to

It was great to see the players actually show some heart and pride in the jumper with that last quarter. Because that first half was worse than the Eagles game and if we were playing Geelongs normal team we would have been 12 to 15 goals down at half time. It was unde 10s stuff our pressure and effort letting then waltz into open goals time and time again.

Not sure what's happened to marra after a great year, his last 2 weeks he's been invisible and not even competing sometimes having watched him closely.

Yes I'm glad we beat those pricks down there but we don't deserve to play finals based on our back half of the year. Hope this win doesn't give the board any false hope that things are OK because they clearly are not.

If the Sydney beat Melbourne and Carlton do this and loose (ridiculous to think) then they risk Sydney going above them with percentage and playing in Sydney first week
You don't flirt with form just before finals. I saw us do it one year in the 90's as we were locked for finals. And we got absolutely smashed in that elimination final

Lobb must be amazing. Our clearance differential is number 2 in the league and centre clearance differential is 4th. Lobb must really be beefing those numbers up in his limited time there despite our crappy first ruck

Careful. Those stats are triggering for some supporters.

The difference between Lobb and English in the centre square was stark. Lobb was far more competitive at ground level. 5 centre clearances for Lobb. A few leading directly to goals. English averages 1.2 centre clearances per game.

Probably should have tried Lobb for longer stints in the middle earlier instead of rolling English through there at a league leading level all season. Might have helped Lobb find some better form in the first half of the season and mitigated some of those drubbings English copped throughout the year.
With the ankle surgery I don't think that Lobb would have been capable of much more earlier in the year. Think he has worked back to full fitness and mobility and has coincided with improvement in the back end of the year

It is absolutely baffling that we knew his ankle needed surgery when we recruited him and didn't immediately book him in to get put under the knife in November. Instead we waited until halfway through the preseason to do it.

Our team? Why is our team different to others?

Show me where effective hit out stats result in a better performing midfield and matches won. This has already been proven to be false. Several times.
Show me the opposite that effective hit outs result in worse performing midfields and matches lost

The naked eye is a better judge than stats

Show me what you want and I will give you the stats

Seven ruckmen had season or career high hitouts against Tim this year:

Bailey Williams (career)
Reilly O’Brien (career)
Scott Lycett (career)
Ned Reeves (career, twice, both against Tim English)
Marc Pittonet (season, 2nd highest career)
Jarrod Witts (season)
Andrew Phillips (season)

Struggle to believe anyone would genuinely believe that has more to do with English’s pov ruck work than having two of the best clearance players in the comp.

West needs to work on his left foot skills. They are not good.

I really wanted someone to smash that smile off Isaac Smith. He was making us look like fools.

Simple recipe to beat the dogs:
1 tag bont and Libba
2 tackle hard
3 play keeping off with the footy as dogs don’t close down space.

Spot on, I think our midfield has to work extra hard because Timmy is just not very good at that stuff. Sure he racks up 20 touches a game but is that a good thing? I don’t want him with the ball I want the ball in Bont & Libbas etc hands, and I want our ruckman throwing his weight around at ground level to support those midfielders.

His marking around the ground is great, but him racking up disposals? Looks good on the stat sheet but doesn’t help us one bit.

He’s obviously a very good player, it’s more that I don’t think he’s close to being worth what it’s going to cost to keep him.

Believe the Lobb surgery took place after round 1.

The most disappointing thing about English is after 7 years he still has no answer when a ruckman just stops at the circle and doesn’t actually jump for the ball. Rather than adjust his jump, start with a shorter run up etc…. Tim just keeps the same approach.

It’s strange given he’s had the chance to work with King, Stef & Lade as part of the coaching staff. A lot of his positioning around boundary throw ins leaves a lot to be desired as well.
