I think Payne is much more useful down back as his intercept marking improved this year. So having Andrews, Payne and Doedee all intercept marking it work make a Frampton type negator less effective.
Yep at this stage he is a back, but could he not go forward for a game or a quarter etc. Different player to Petty, and yes different team structure as we already have two KPF, but Petty seemed to play well in the Dees forward line when put forward.

Frampton was effective?
Thought he did a great job for 3 quarters. Andrews had minimal impact until the last.

We generated 49 intercepts for the day... our lowest for the season. Even lower than Round 1 v Port. The fact Andrews was unable to zone off and intercept mark robbed us of one of our primary sources of turnovers.

Job done.

He‘d have to be a pretty good forward to make up for what we lose in having him back, and he would’ve been trialed forward at various stages during training to let the coaches know how effective he is there. But if you’re saying in a break glass in case of emergency putting him forward in case of injury, sure if we need to, and we already have in that scenario as we saw in a final no less.

Agreed. High risk high reward but high work rate too.
They always want number superiority at and around the ball.....out numbering their opponents, creating that pressure and developing a reactive/panicked disposal from their opponents. This allows their intercept game to come into play if the turnover doesn't happen.

Saw this on another thread, about Collingwood. I agree with a number of posters here who have said we need to get fitter, briztoon and acuguy chief among them. However, rather than see us use that extra running ability to outnumber our opposition around the ball, I'd prefer our focus be on outworking our opposition on the spread.

My pretty strong view is that on-ball pressure is a massively overrated stat and factor in the game... your pressure only needs to be "adequate" and your structure behind the ball should be able to take care of the rest. And ours did for most of the season, apart from a 29⁰ Grand Final day and a couple of last quarters against Melbourne where we lost our ability/willingness to spread to create space when we had the ball.

Improving our fitness/endurance etc and then using that to better outnumber at the contest runs the risk of creating a never-ending arms race. Except it will end... with 18 players gathered within a table cloth of the footy.

Let's not fight that battle. Collingwood is already miles ahead in that one. Let's fight this one instead. More sustainable in the long term, and much better viewing as well.

RIP straight line football.

Thought that had more to do with their goals from outside 50 and quick ball movement to Hill than it did any defensive job on Harris.

If we need a real break the glass option, leave Payne back and throw Harris forward. He’s proven he can more then get by as forward option.

That is besides the point.

He’s processing the grand final loss in his own way, which appears to involve not reading. I’m not going to hold it against him as it was a heartbreaking afternoon.

Collingwood was going shallow to midfielders and small forwards closer to the 50m arc who were running towards goal. That's also part of the reason they had a lot of behinds - their shots came from further out. We kicked nine goals from within about 30m, they kicked three.

Frampton could have been sitting in the front row of the stands and Andrews still wouldn't be getting to those marks and contests further out.

Sharp will be 21 years old in 2024 and has been in the AFL system for 3 years. He should be ready next year being his contract year.
I think Sharp has to make it at AFL level in 2024 or the club will move to fill his spot on the list.
I would also be thinking of moving Wilmott to wing as i believe we can fill that half back role more easily than wing.

Sharp signed an extension this year to 2025.

Do expect him to kick out Ah Chee has the winger so Ah Chee can focus on being a forward/ultimate sub.

Dunks stepping up to #1 midfield role means we need someone else to be a defensive mid. I don’t mind the Neal Dunkley Ashcroft Clugga rotation, but who do you see as that defensive mid?

Wouldn't be surprised if the club got Dev over the line by promising him the Dunks defensive/tagging role when Neale starts to get transitioned out of the side.

Gees Stevo I hope not. Neale I believe has at least another three years of quality footy before transitioning out of the side.

Half the competition will look at us and go "gees we are better than them."
Melbourne and Adelaide have already gone public with that, so the competition will come at us strongly. Others would have seen how Collingwood dismantled our game plan with soldiers doing their negating job. Yes I know we only lost by 4 points, but realistically the end result flattered us.

There will be no time for feeling sorry for ourselves. We need to prepare like no side has ever done. Next year, it will be perhaps the greatest challenging year for us. Can Fagan prepere the side to meet the challenge?

Collingwood with be the hunted as the winners of last/this years flag.

We will be in the same boat - folks know that they have to be able to beat both Lions and Pies to win it and will prepare accordingly

With Adcock and Stone leaving the coaching ranks its a chance to get some fresh eyes and ideas into the club. Gives Fages a good freshen up too.

The addition of Doedee improves our defense, for the business end of the season anyway. Same with the return of Ashcroft in the midfield. And our fwds will again be scoring as heavily as they have the last cpl of years.

The youngest lads Fletcher and Wilmot will be better for the experience and another preseason. Kiddy will be more comfortable and confident after his year. Darcy Gardiner seems to have got his body right at last, and will be much more valuable thru the year. Dev will get the opportunity to start the year and I see him relieving Dunkley inside as the defensive mid, he will be a man on a mission. Hopefully some rest n rehab will be good for Berry's shoulders. Hopefully Gunston comes back fitter and shows us why we got him.

We need to get fitter, Pies showed us up in the GF. I'd love to see us improve our tackling as well. We get pushed off or fall off tackles far to often. And more important than anything all the players need to come back hungrier than ever.

We have some great depth, maybe a bit light on in the fwds but it's there. I have great hopes for 2024, it's a very good squad. Just a 10% improvement across the board and some good luck with injuries and there's no reason we can't take the last and toughest step.

You had me till you got to Gunston. Cannot see any possible way he improves our team onfield.

Mate, just hoping he's fitter pretty much, gotta hope he can atleast be decent depth. I agree, I don't think he can add anything to the firsts and will only play if there's injuries.

IMO this team prefers playing without him. In a perfect world he would sniff the wind, realise it was a mistake, and give it away. I was not joking when I posted there is now room in the coaches box for him - it is the only way he will contribute to our further success. Again, only my opinion.

I don't want him in the starting line up, but given our lack of key forward depth I hope he goes around for one more year. Even with him being pretty clearly washed he's probably a better break glass in case of emergency option than Henry Smith. Fort can do a job obviously but isn't a forward.

Reality is our midfield lost us the Grand Final. If they can find a way to improve and get better I think we will be ok. Some development of our small defenders would be handy too.
That's hard to argue against that.
They got us a few times batting the ball on forward at all cost, sometimes to a space for the next player.
Although some of those times the ball bounced there way but tbh it was because they were there first , (read the play better, first to react , fitter)
We also need our back flankers or half backs to run the ball out , more than what we do.
Our best movement out of defence is Kiddy's kicks, adding overlap running to that what be great.
We need someone like Ah Chee to step up and take this role by the scruff.
Hopefully some consistant game time can do that.
McKenna as well.
