Losers of the "riches to rags" style

Never understood WCE giving up a decent draft pick for him. He will always be a 3rd stringer and only look good in a really strong midfield.

I agree with you, but how much of that is hindsight?
Winning teams tend to get viewed like that: all of the role players get high profiles, and people naturally ask the question "what if" - how good would they be if they were higher in the pecking order? It is a hard thing to judge, and clubs often get it wrong.

(Also you can't really say that the Brisbane Lions team that 3-peated was the same as the Bears team that drafted Bucks... I don't think anyone at that stage would've predicted how good the Lions became).

Heh, I see Collingwood supporters make this point over and over again.

In a way it does justify Buckley's decision, but it is also what makes it such a belter of a story. It's a real Bad Luck Brian scenario.

I think Pies supporters need to stop fighting tooth and nail to try and have it all stricken from the record. Firstly, it won't happen, secondly, it's just a great footy anecdote.

I mean c'mon, he left a battling minnow club to go to a powerhouse... aforementioned minnow goes on to three peat, and in two of those finals, Buckley is lining up against them. It is a movie script come to life.

Again - I am in no way playing it down. It did turn out to be very ironic, and Bucks would've copped a lot for it during thos GF years - and the media did bring it up quite a bit back then. Its also that one thing that someone like Vossy can hold over Bucks - if you use the flags to rate Voss ahead of Bucks, then that is fair and not something I can argue with... but I would bet that most other AFL players (other than those who tick both the elite, and flag-winning boxes) would give anything to have the type of career that Bucks had.

But that should not take anything away from the level of player that Bucks was - and again, it is ridiculous to suggest that his career as a player was riches-to-rags, or that he in any way belongs in this thread.

Missing a month with a knee injury is what I've heard. People in Perth may have a better understanding

Not again...he's the modern version of Neale Daniher.

What about Geoff Raines.

Star at Richmond, including the 1980 premiership.
Went to Collingwood on huge coin, was asked to take a paycut.
Refused the paycut and bobbed up at Essendon, which split a premiership winning club in a way.
Went to Brisbane Bears and whilst good, was a shadow of his former self by then.

Perhaps he should have stayed at Richmond!

I think we overpaid by virtue of ladder position. IMO he was worth about pick 25ish and we had pick 18. We caved pretty quickly and just paid pick 18 rather than offering pick 40 etc. or haggling over exchanging picks - and the year prior we did the same thing with Brad Ebert and let him go for slightly below what he was worth.

Seriously, anyone mentioning Buckley in a riches to rags thread? He went on to captain the biggest team in the league, now coaches them and has some rather influential backers. He may not have got a flag, but he's not really struggling.

three flags in a row or captaining then coaching collingwood? not hard to get the right answer there.

After today's news, Anthony Morabito comes to mind. Through no fault of his own of course, poor bugger.

Menzel falls into this category too. Was probably our most talented youngster and would've been a walk up start to the 2011 GF team, but did his knee in the QF and hasn't played a match since

Sad as injuries are, they are not akin to the Sean Dundee story where what turned out to be a bad decision made the person a loser. And yes, I believe the Buckley decision made him a Sean Dundee style "loser" in the sense that he could have captained Brisbane to 3 premierships, but chose to go to Collingwood because he thought their premiership chances were greater.

He's not a laughing stock by any means, but if you look at the reasoning behind his move to Collingwood then Bucks is definitely a rags to riches loser. Missed out and had to watch the team he left beat him for the flag. Wouldn't be disappointed with his career but you'd reckon he;d have to wonder sometimes

Very true.

I found it strange the he and Milne were treated so differently but if you believe the story Milne always denied any wrong doing where as Lovett broke down in front of the playing group and admitted he thought he had done something wrong.

After that they didnt trust him and Lyon wanted him gone so that he wasnt a distraction.

Dont think he wouldve made the difference in 2010 though...

There was built up loyalty with Milne and the only other witness was a Saints player who didn't think anything wrong happened. The Lovett thing had Gram as a witness and from what has been said about his reaction to it I don't think many Saints players would have been happy to play alongside Lovett.

Liam kicked 90 odd goals in 30 games with just 2 pre seasons and really no idea how to play in a structure
The kid kicked goals on the ground, over his head and also won mark of the year
Was one of the most naturally talented kids you would ever see
Is not even 25 now and is completely gone

It's a pity you blokes didn't pick up Liam Patrick. Could have gone better with a team that had less youngsters. He also has his head screwed on right and would have been good for Jurrah. 6 or 7 years ago when Lajamanu played Yuendumu they had a rivalry similar to Carey and Jackovitch.

Well here's an interesting one:
Gary Ablett Snr.
Probably would have had five premiership medals...................................instead was a participant in four losing grand finals.

Interesting? Hawthorn sacked the guy forcing him to bide his time in the bush. Funny way to show one of the all time greatest Australian Rules footballers that (a) you want him and (b) respect his talent.

What is really interesting is that Hawthorn realised it had stuffed up big time and made an all-out effort in 1987 to get him back at Glenferrie Road. Had the Hawks been successful, Ablett may have played in 3 premierships.

Equally interesting is the fact that Hawthorn missed out on getting GAJ under the father-son rule.

Considering Hawthorn's success in the last 30 years, they really didn't lose out much by getting rid of Gary Ablett.

Here we go another Nathan Buckley thread he didn't turn to shit after leaving just didn't win a flag like so many other greats

When I read this thread I think of the couple blokes who left Essendon very highly rated after 2001 Heffernan and Blumfield and just really dropped off.
