Hartigan is much like Luke Brown. Dead eye dick when it comes to set shots.
Yep, he's one of the better set shots in our team at training in his own view and I tend to think he'd be right. There's nothing particularly poor about his technique in kicking, its very good. He just takes way too risky options too many times for what he can do.

How many players have been mentioned as the worst kick in the comp?

I've counted:
RoB (my vote)
Brouch
Kelly
Hartigan
Talia
Laird (he did play well though i thought)

It is a real worry these players with bad skills. I'd add in Jones and McAsey as well as being really poor kicks at this level but we can forgive them at this stage.

Instead of the skilled and strong bodied Hately we opted for the light framed Jones who is yet to kick over the man on the mark and inexplicably handballed when having a shot from 40 out.

Recruitment is the issue. You cant polish a turd. Especially one with bad skills.

I think the redeployment of Smith, Seed and Atkins might play into what your saying.

Better users closer to the coal face.

Both Crouch’s are pretty ordinary by foot, so maybe it’s better for them to be at 1st/2nd touch and then release the other 3.
Wait what? According to Vadar Brodie Smith has already been playing midfield all this time hasn’t he? 😂😂

EDIT: What a week to pick to dig your heals in on that howler!

We love Sloane but his field kicking is pretty terrible too.

Look at that list. Four of our back six rated as terrible kicks, which I agree with. No wonder we've struggled to get it past half way.

Hartigan is a poor kick with terrible decision making
Talia makes decent decisions but his execution is lacking
Kelly is a mediocre kick with no offensive bone in his body, so also has poor decision making
Laird cannot kick the ball anywhere but straight to the moon

Already gone past Butts? ...Whoa up brother,.

Butts played several really dominant games in the SANFL last season up against some pretty decent tall opposition and was mostly way better than serviceable in all his games.

Only difference is McAsey has been given opportunities against full blown AFL opposition straight off the bat a lot of what is probably more to do with where he was drafted. And btw they're quite different players in game styles as well.
I don't rate butts as high as most at this point. Think he's tracking okay from where he's come from, and I also think he might be a viable option going forward, but from the limited game time McAsey has seen so far in Adelaide, he's shown just as much imo with a much higher ceiling.

I called it 9 iron but love that “straight to the moon”😁

Think Talia cops a bad wrap. He nearly always hits up his short passes and generally knows his limitations.

The others I agree with.

Jones needs to settle at afl level before I'll comment. He shows some real class by foot at times but also looks but also looks nervous. I hope we don't stuff him around.

Talia is ok just slow at hand to foot

The 2018 draft makes for horrendous reading.

Seems a bit alarmist. You're talking about a draft class that has played 1 year.
Whilst there looks like a lot of really good young players - and none of the Crows players have really showed out yet, I think you need to give them a bit more of a chance.

Sharp is a first year player Gold Coast drafted , now that is a beautifully skilled player.

I think the Rat needs to work on getting a quick handball out when in traffic.
he seems to want to escape and kick but gets caught too often.

It's this predictability that the Rat will never use the quick option (especially by hand) that makes him even more vulnerable to getting caught.
Smart players aren't predictable so they don't invite this immediate tackling pressure.

The irony also of us not taking hately due to the fact we had yolmen and greenwood as inside contested beasts.

Gone from having too many inside bulls to nothing
Ummmm

You obviously didn't watch the 2019 U18 Championships....Schoenberg was SA's M.V.P. playing as an inside midfielder and an All Australian in that role.

Ronin O'Connor played inside mid for WA at the Championships and Captained the Claremont U18's to the 2019 WAFL Premiership playing inside mid with some stints across half back. Obviously a heavy focus of Hamish and his team at last year's draft.

Both have in spades what Greenwood and CEY lack.....burst speed and pace and both get on their bike to be further used in chains of play unlike the other two. I might add Hately is not over flash when it comes to burst speed and pace either, size is more his weapon as a mid.

Gollant when he puts on some beef who knows just yet?

A few observations from the stand:
Kelly played well, apart from his 'goal' for GC.
Seed and Rat both worked harder on the inside than I've seen before.
McAsey played up forward for the last ten minutes or so. He got hands to ball inside a couple of monster packs and the ball just didn't stick. I think Nicks may surprise and give him some forward minutes in the early rounds to see how he goes. Wouldn't mind seeing him named forward and bring Butts into the back line.
The Crouch bros worked their arses off, especially in that last quarter. Both could be in line for best years. Brad's goal on the run from about 48 out was a delight to see.
Davis is going to be a force to be reckoned with this year up forward. I hope he gets the nod against Sydney, although the way Nicks spoke after the game it sounds as though one of Himmelberg or Frampton may suit up, Hopefully not Frampton as don't think he's AFL standard. I hope I'm wrong.
The chains of passes to get through GC's crush were at times terrific. Worked much better than against the Ds when we seemed somewhat hesitant and went sideways and backwards too often. Once we cement these tactics, they will be hard to counter. At the moment our skills need to improve to execute.
It was Gold Coast, last year's wooden spooner, but I suspect they are a better side this year. I expect them to win a few more this year. They will be competitive, especially in the first half of the season.
We are not as bad as some in here and out there think. Not a threat, but somewhere between 6 and 10.

Like a couple of other posters here I'm intrigued why Schoenberg didn't get a game yesterday. I can only think they reckon he's too young and don't want to expose to the big time too soon. But hey! he seems to have taken everything in his stride up until now, doesn't look out of place at all and is exactly what we're crying out for - someone with footy smarts who can find the footy in the midfield and use it.
He's a natural as far as I can see and keeps stepping up every time it's asked of him. He looks tough enough. Let's see what he can do.
We don't seem to be introducing any youngsters to the midfield.

Midfield has been re-jigged, but by moving other senior players in i.e. Smith with cameos from Seed and Atkins.

That's a sign we have our sights set on making the 8 rather than a rebuild.

Not sure where they hid Jones but don't recall him getting a look in the middle. Schoey will be even further back in the queue. Probably will require bulk injuries to get a game.

Have to agree re Chayce Jones, I've been stunned he hasn't got a shedload more exposure to the midfield this pre-season after what he showed he's capable against the Doggies stellar midfield group in round 23 2019. Schoenberg I'm not so concerned about at this point as the word was his tank would be the main focus in his 1st season. Chayce's handling however has me mystified after talking him up so much in the pre-season.

Can’t help but keep comparing Scho to D Jarman the way he gets across the ground and kicks hope he turns out similar

I think when Doedee comes back, we can interchange him & McAsey on the 2nd/3rd tall forward, with Talia taking the main big target.

McAsey was the most pleasing thing about this game & we must play him for as many games as possible. Ie. until he needs a rest... as he is thr future.

Sorry Hartigan, you are backup for Talia as not in the same league.

Harto has been way over-maligned. I’ve been a strong supporter of his but he’s a long way back at present. If Fish runs out of gas I’d like to see whoever is next in line. Harto is SANFL depth now, if he wants to play at AFL level, he should request a trade.

Alarmist is the name of the game on this board unfortunately
