Re: Matt Rendall...

After reading this thread i'm pissed I completely forgot about it! anyone got a link to tonight's episode or anything?
'FOOTY CLASSIFIEDS" is not telecast in Sydney. It is usually posted on Channel 9 World of Sports Web site.
Here is a link to Part 1 of the interview:

If you wish, just copy and paste that and move from there.
Talk about Matt being a scapegoat !!

Was he asked;
1 What were the other comments?
2 If the 2 AFL officials were so upset why did they seemingly take no action on the matter for a period of 2 months? and
3 Would Rendell have been sacked if he hadn't resigned?

Grant Thomas on Footy Classified indicated that he had spoken to Mifsud and the impression I got was that Mifsud was placed in an uncomfortable position by AD after a passing reference to the matter in a presentation to the AFL Executive.

There appeared to be no great angst (according to Thomas) from Mifsud on the matter and both Thomas & Rendell stated that the friendship between all 3 remained intact.

Again I would have thought it brought into question Trigg's assertion that the 2 AFL officers were "extremely upset".

I'm just going from what I heard from Trigg on the radio.

Both AFL officers told Trigg they were offended by what was said. Trigg also said he doesn't quite know how Rendell didn't realise Mifsud and the other AFL afficial were unhappy with what occured.

Did they ask why it took these 2 "offended" AFL officers 6 weeks to speak up?

That's what I meant.

Were the 3 questions I posted above asked of Trigg in the 5AA interview.
Or indeed did the 5AA presenters ask any hard questions of Trigg in relation to the matter?

I'm sure the interview will be put up sooner rather than later, and yes, the two on 5aa are massive Crow apologists and were red hot on Triggy for not handling the issue properly, in their minds Trigg should have gone into bat for his employee.

Trigg disagreed.

Triggs interview on 5aa paints a somewhat different picture than Rendell did last night. He said it was more than one comment, not just one throw away line, and the two AFL officers were extremely upset with what was said in the meeting.

Trigg said he realises Rendell isn't a racist and doesn't hold racist views but that his job was simply untenable after what was said. Said he had spoken to Mifsud at great lengths - so he is someone who has obviously heard both sides of the story and this is the action he has chosen to take.

I would be very interested to hear Mifsuds side of the story.

The bolded bit doesn't make sense to me given that a month or more passed before one of those officers raised it and even then only in response to a story surrounding indigenous issues in the afl in the aftermath of the jurrah incident. If they were both extremely upset why didn't they raise the issue earlier and within the AFL rather than to a journalist.

And why are we hearing from Trigg and Demetriou and not Misfud, especially if according to Trigg, Rendell's account is inaccurate.

There is a reality at play here that no-one wants to admit lest they upset the warm and fuzzy illusion.

The AFL is a brutal system and the demands it places on its participants in terms of professionalism, off field behaviour, understanding game plans etc is ever increasing. Players in capital cities or large regional bases, especially Victoria through the TAC, are groomed from a young age to cope with the rigours of life has an AFL player should they show the ability and inclination to follow that path. Even then there is no guarantee they will cope.

As you move further into the rural areas the adjustment becomes greater and when you are talking about young boys from remote communities there is nothing in their upbringing that would prepare them for life in a large city and a life as an AFL player with all that it involves.

Recruiters are tasked with the job of unearthing quality players who have both the natural ability to play AFL and the mindset to cope with the requirements placed on players. It is natural that a city based player is more likely to adapt to that life than a player based hundreds of kilometres from a city or large town.

Rendell and others have noted there is a larger attrition rate amongst indigenous players, especially those form remote communities and he was suggesting a potential solution. The inconvenient truth is that if nothing is done to stem the high attrition rate, then inevitably recruiters will be hesitant to draft such players are they pose a greater risk.

The great shame of all this is that after seeing what has happened to Rendell, no one else will be prepared to come out and say there is a problem because they will be fearful they will have their heads chopped off as well.

1. He felt it was unfair to air the comments in the public forum without the two AFL officers permission [or something along those lines]
2. Trigg only heard on Wednesday last week, supposedly it was an AFL matter up until that point.
3. Yep, supposedly his position was untenable.

I think the answer supplied was it was an internal AFL matter up to that point. I'm pretty sure that's what Trigg said.

Thanks.

As others have said I would have thought it pertinent for Trigg, when he spoke to Mifsud, to have asked the question if the comments were so egregious, when they were made in January, why was Adelaide only being informed of them in March.

I also find it strange that Trigg felt Rendell's supposed other comments couldn't be broadcast without the AFL's permission. But he had no problem in referencing them and thereby painting Rendell in a bad light.

So why did the afl then choose to make it public?

Supposedly the Crows were told of it Wednesday and it was mentioned by Mifsud in an interview with a paper Friday?

I'm not trying to say it isn't murky - it doesn't help that there seem to be conflicting stories coming out.

Both AFL officers told Trigg they were offended by what was said. Trigg also said he doesn't quite know how Rendell didn't realise Mifsud and the other AFL afficial were unhappy with what occured.

In last night's intro, Thomas spoke about a conversation he had yesterday with Mifsud in which he asked whether Mifsud thought Rendell would follow through on the comment. He said Mifsud laughed and replied, "Absolutely not! I don't think Matt even believes what he said." There was no offence taken by Mifsud.

If Fahour was offended, he obviously didn't feel it was worth acting on. If he's offended in hindsight it's because he's been ordered to be offended.

Demetriou needs to offer Rendell his job back and admit that a mistake has been made.

Rendell: *Spends 15 minutes explaining comments, why he made them and the context of the original conversation*

Wilson: Well you still haven't explained why you made the silly comment in the first place.

It's like she had a list of questions she planned to ask him before the interview - and then she completely ignored his statements and asked her pre prepared questions anyway.

What a godamn Sooz.

In Caro's defence, she may have been attempting to add some balance to the program, albeit clumsily. The show couldn't afford to be seen as exclusively promoting an anti-AFL stance. Besides, Thomas had that angle well covered with his input - delivered deadpan and leaden with sarcasm. Was in his element.

Enjoyed the show, will watch again although they won't always have such fertile material to work with.

Yes.

I normally think Grant Thomas is an A Grade flog.

But he was bang on the money last night.

This whole sordid affair stinks to high heaven! Sounds poor from all angels. One thing for sure though is that wherever Ahmed Fahour is dirty play is about

Re: Matt Rendall...

sounds like his comment was a throw away line referring to what might happen unless young aboriginal players are better prepared for afl, rather than a policy he actively employs in recruiting.

caro is amazingly stupid.

She's one of AFL's mouthpieces.
