Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 2) - Full Support of the Board

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

I have a slightly different take.
If Nicks spent this year coaching for his survival, he would be more inclined to stick to conservative selections and no variation in game style.
He now has some certainty to allow for more flexible thinking - it is just a matter of seeing if he has the capacity to do that.
We found a positive.

Surely no one was actually surprised by this signing
Am I surprised?
Given the club Admin. satisfaction with mediocrity (reflected in the decision),
no,
but I am disappointed.

I'll accept the decision (having no choice) and hope like hell that I am wrong about Nicks.

If he's only on $400k I would expect the rest of our football department to be stacked, which it isn't
Burgess would be on a fair bit.

More than Nicks.

At Port he was on close to $600k including the sponsorship arrangement with UniSA.

Not that this surprises me in the slightest, but if we were going to re-sign the guy after round 1, why not just do it in the preseason?

What could we have possibly learned after one round of football (a loss, to boot) to have convinced us that, yep, this is the time.

The 6 month clause is for all senior coaches for all clubs.

Re-signing after a Round One loss where we checks notes kick one goal in the first half and only played about 17mins of actual football?

Sold!

AFL insists on six-month payout clauses for coaches

18 Sept 2020 — The new guideline mandates a maximum six-month settlement to any sacked coach at an AFL-funded club regardless of the length of his contract.

The club being 100% sure on a coach that hasn't made finals yet is bad
Damn !!! .....fancy not making the Finals in each year of a rebuild ....the audacity

Clarko and Mitchell are in real trouble then

Tit's only for AFL-assisted clubs like Suns and St Kilda.

I find it hard to believe Hardwick would agree to such a clause.

Some coaches have more negotiating power than others.

Agree totally. Saturday's Crows looked as inept for a bit over 3 quarters as the Crows early last year.

The Club would know a lot more around Bye time, after which it's either bye-bye-Nicks, or a contract extension.

Why after round 1?

He was probably already signed
It didn't take Houdini to work out, the essence of the agreement was already settled .....OK shoot me George Kramer ...I missed the actual announcement by a week

IF Hardwick was to be exempted from the AFL Coach payout policy .....it would rebound onto all other AFL Clubs facing a coaching payout

Making finals isn't the issue

It's being 100% sure that a coach who hasn't had any success is the right coach

Thats 4 years ago, a bit has happened since then.
Tell me the changes where's it has changed ?

Only thing I've read, is the AFL Coaches Association wanting the 6 months extended to 12 months payout ....this was last year

Most Clubs should be out of the AFL Covid funding period soon anyway .....so getting close to being a redundant argument
