They wanted some idiotic feel good story "hey look we have the right man for the job".
FFS we are going to be the laughing stock of the AFL for the next few years, we are going to head into Eagles territory.

Hawks and North, while basket cases, are accumulating a wealth of talent. They will be a powerhouse well before us.

I wonder if our consistency in not honouring a lead and instead kicking long is going back to Nicks' "get it as close to goal as possible" strategy.
As in, "Look for the deeper option"? (closer to goal)
If so, that's a panic-response to games we lost by bad goalkicking last year.
Bad, BAD Coaching.
Did anyone else notice in footage so far this pre-season/season when we practice our set shots all the players are seeking to do it from no more than 30-40 metres out?
See above, same.

I think teams have just worked out that Dawson is very one-sided. Combined with a generally less effective team around him.
Doesnt explain why his disposal has been poor even when under little pressure.

In fairness thats where you would like to have your set shots, but you need to be running the ball into the forward zone not bombing it
With respect, closest option isn't necessarily best option.
In the screenshot I used, Tex was closest to goal (and maybe our best kick for goal, too) but not in best-option position to receive.

But, "not bombing it", most definitely :thumbsu:.

I think we were relying on TT to bring the ball to ground.
We shouldn't be relying on 1 plan nor 1 player.

This is like we just gave up manning up Stewart after the stupid plan of using Pedlar.

Don't think we have any cluey strategic thinkers in our coaching box which imo is the biggest flaw in this coaching group.

I reckon the AFC should let one of us on this board into the coaches box each game so we can say “fellas, are you seeing what I’m seeing?” and “how about this for an idea?”.

I understand, but running and linking up allows you get the ball deeper, was that clip from a mark kick? And looked like Murphy not sure

Anyone else of the opinion that the club giving Nicks an extension when they did has actually increased the pressure and expectation on him?
No, not me.
The extension was made on the back of what was perceived to be a good 2023.
2023 was actually mediocre. 10th is mediocre.
It was also made on a false, hopeful expectation that we were Finals-bound, after 2023 and a first-round loss, ffs.

The 2-year extension was a mistake. Totally unwarranted.
A Club with any reasonable decision-makers would have made the decision based on results this year, preferably by or even after the Bye Round.
Seriously, what was the hurry? Suppose we made the 8; OK, great, extend his contract as a reward, a vote of confidence.
The noise about his contract was external and Clubs are not queuing up to get Nicks.
It feels like it's actually had the complete opposite affect that they were hoping it was going to have.
Well, that's because it was a garbage decision and we are 0-3 and playing dreadful footy.

I had another look; freeze-frame, zoomed in.
Yes, was from a mark. The Crow wheels around to get on his Left foot, but I couldn't read the number.
Anybody, Murphy? Looks like.

Regardless, the kick was not deep enough to be to Tex's advantage.
The Pedlar one was a howler. Pedlar kicked to open grass for 40m all around, with Tex 10m in front and leading.
Appalling.

AFL funding was always described as teams who took COVID loans. The AFL didn't want that money going to pay out coaches contracts, so wrote in that rule. We borrowed money privately from Bendigo Bank during that period, so weren't required to abide by any AFL rules regarding how we spent money.

How is this still being brought up?

I hadn't looked at it like that but I think you are right. The best thing so far has been our draw. The last thing we need at the moment is West Coast where a win releases the pressure. We won't come back from 0-3 but definitely won't from 0-4 so after this week it's back to rebuilding.

I said exactly this after we reappointed him that I felt his extension would only increase the pressure on the club.

It also puts pressure internally now as well because the club have gone all on him.

The club now need him to succeed for their own sake as well as his own.
Yeah, some have effectively tied themselves to the success of Nicks. There will need to be change of board members & senior staff if it becomes another Sando situation.

Nope. Both round 1 & 2 losses last year were frustrating because for the majority of those games, we were clearly the better team.

In neither of our 3 losses this year at any point could you say we were better than our opponents.

I would say we looked better than Geelong at times , but not a convincing way, and you knew we would allow them to stay in the game

1st quarter against Fremantle and definitely 2nd quarter against Geelong when we wasted all those inside 50 and last quarter against GCS.
