Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 2) - Full Support of the Board

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

Late to the party, but what shat me with Nicks on 360 was when Robbo said "when are the next wave of players going to stand up". I reckon every crows supporter watching, including me, yelled at the TV "when they're given a bloody chance".
If nicks was honest he should have said when we have a new head coach, new assistants, new head recruiter and a better list management team.

Nicks has the final say. Make no mistake about that. Its Nicks team and he will only walk into a room with the players he wants in the side. The other members of the selection committee are there to sound ideas, play devils advocate and discuss pro's and cons to a players inclusion or omission. They may voice an idea Nicks likes that gets a player selected and a player omitted but its really at Nicks discretion.
Having nicks as the final arbiter in the decision making for team selection fills me with no confidence. Surely a head of football should see he isn't equipped for this task and at least make sure our best player in the sanfl last week is first chosen when our team is devoid of visible progress this year.

Nicks just keeps doubling down on everything he has done in the past that hasn't worked
Laird and Crouch both in the midfield? McHenry? Sholl again? Murphy?

I don’t even think they’re mistakes.

He has a clear selection policy driven by two main criteria:
1. Selected side must meet a certain minimum average games played threshold
2. Before the season, players are divided into three groups (forwards, mids, defenders). You can only replace a mid with a mid, a fwd with a fwd and defender with a defender. There is also rule #1 to comply with

When you realise these are the two main selection criteria then all of the team selections for years make complete sense.

How many times has a player deserved a debut or add to their single digit games played tally but been overlooked for a less performing but higher games count player? You can look at criteria #1 and/or #2 and readily find your answer!

The players definitely are out of form though. The Fremantle game had absolutely atrocious skills from players who are very capable of hitting up a target. That can be (and is) true at the same time as there being plenty of other things going wrong.

For a majority of the game we play a game plan which does limit scoring but it allows the opposition to apply constant pressure when the ball isn't to advantage, this is why we are ranked the most pressure applied to by opposition.

Listening to Silvers on 5AA, he’s acknowledged ball movement needs to improve but again going down the players are out of form, we had pressure put on internally and made some changes, expect a response.

All players don’t go out of form without something being wrong, how about putting it on the coaches?
Yeah when nearly the whole team appears confused & down on confidence... it's been driven by the coaching game plan.

The coaching group have taken a proven game plan that was working & ****ed it up over preseason.

Why would the highest scoring team look to play a game limiting scoring?

Beyond dumb to do this from the outset. Should just be a strategy during the game if the other side has a run on.

I'm not convinced that's a plan exactly, though the coaching staff is responsible either way so ultimately it doesn't matter too much. That I can get behind blaming the coaches for, but Hinge or Dawson missing a 20 metre pass while under absolutely no pressure is actually a form issue - those players are very capable of making those plays and just aren't at the moment.

So the response is we should try harderer

I think it's fair to hold the coaching staff responsible for that too though.

Chris Fagan said in his press conference last week that a lot of Brisbane players were out of form, but ended with the statement that it was his job to get them back into form. Shouldn't Nicks be held to that standard too?

Ever the great Coach has chosen to favour geriatric players over youth .....after getting all those AFL Draft concessions

Shiels 32 YO .....had already retired from HAW
Greenwood 32 YO

Meanwhile Draft Pick #3 Phillips, remains in the magoos

So does this make Clarko a **** Coach ?

Given they have the youngest team, hard to be critical of him playing a few experienced players needed to lead the way.

When there are players clearly in horrible form & coaches continue to select them whilst they have other players available, that is on the coaches.

Same with picking injured players effectively leaving us a player short.
